Despite Mary Jo Foley’s report of Microsoft’s portable Surface “Andromeda” device never seeing the light of day, fans are not giving up hope and have set up a new petition to drive their interest home to Redmond. 8,611 have signed so far, which suggests there could be a pretty sizable market for what is supposed to be a folding, phone-sized PC.

Andromeda or its successor could still end up coming to market at some point and attempt to fulfill Andromeda's original goal: A portable, multi-screen Windows-10-based device. But if that happens, expect something more akin to a small foldable PC type form factor rather than a phone-sized device, sources say. And something that will run Win32 apps, not just Univeral Windows Platform (UWP)/Microsoft Store ones.

All MS has to do is start kickstarter. Let those 8.6K petition signers put their money where there mouth is.

Yeah, because the world wants another Windows phone. A gimmicky one that looks like Nintendo designed it. Good idea.

Yea, I have a feeling the 8,611 people were paid by Microsoft to stir up interest. Nobody used these phones then, and nobody does now.

Nah, Nadella has already pivoted Microsoft away from all consumer related products and initiatives internally - including Windows, evidenced by the gutting of the division and the firing of Myerson - with the one tolerated exception being Xbox since it's kind of its own silo.

I did and still would if I could. Android is more of a toy than a tool and significantly less reliable to work with and fiddly, Apple is well...a fashion statement more than anything and while less fiddly and less reliability problems is also more closed in, but it's the later that makes it work place popular choice (Which I hate with a passion).

My phone has less issues than a Microsoft Phone (I've had mobile, phone 7, 7.5, 8..)
Surface RT, pro's.

I am not impressed the least, I cannot express how crappy those products were, I'd rather have a mac and I hate using macs !

If Nintendo had a phone, had access to a retro game library, and it didn't run like crap playing Switch/Wii-U level games, I'd ditch my LG V20 today. And I haven't had a Nintendo console since the GameCube.

I would actually like to see Microsoft have a successful phone in the arena. I feel that without their presence, Android and iOS are just not really trying to innovate, or really push for better features anymore. Just prettier gimmicks and bells and whistles that ultimately mean nothing to the person using the phone.

Android and iOS are operating systems, they don't push for shit. :) If you mean the manufacturers of the phones that happen to run those OSes, sure, they're stagnant for the most part, but one only has to look at what OPPO is doing or Vivo with the pop up cameras to see that no, innovation from the hardware standpoint hasn't stopped and there can still be fresh ideas.

Sadly, the only way this kind of device would ever make even a small dent in the market would be - drumroll please - if it ran Android out of the box.

Microsoft will never make said dent in the marketplace with any Windows-based phone product, they never have, they never will. Not even the original devices with Windows Mobile on them - of which I owned quite a few over the years - were enough to make a serious push that got noticed. Someday they'll learn and give up on it once and for all and stop wasting time and resources.

But if they had made the Surface Phone, using the Ubuntu Edge device (they could have bought the IP and all the patents on the design), they could have gotten somewhere. As it is, they didn't, and they never will 'cause they just stupid for the most part and that's that.

So you've had old phones and making new assumptions, got it. I've had 7 android phones and had them soft restart, fail to update, brick themselves, fail to install software, break software update to update, wireless that doesn't stay connected, or work at all. Features that change so radically I have to hunt it down again to find any settings or where it's located and then teach everyone I know how to use it again, etc etc etc. And that was just the last 3 years. I've had everything from Samsung to Motorola, unlocked and ROM'd to stock to vanilla (Worked best, by far, actually worthwhile). My problems with my 3 Nokia Windows phones........sorry can't think of any, same 3 year span.

I think it's only a matter of time. Their stock is falling due to a lack of enthusiasm for the switch. They really slowed down since Zelda and Mario. I feel like the mobile stuff that they do is a test run for that possibility.

I love my Surface (hell I still use my Zune HD) but I don't see a purpose for a phone nor double-screen "surface"

Switch is still a homerun. Just sold out a few places today with Google's 25% off coupon.

Do these 3 people not realise that you can’t just email a company and demand that they make something for you?

Let’s face it, this is the most stupid idea of 2018 so far, not counting the whole starting the global trade war thing, but that’s in a whole other category.

If they are not going to produce it, they are not going to produce it, simple as that. Petitions, in this case, are a waste of time. Besides, as much as I loved the Windows phone platform and MS Band as well, they hardware reliability sucked on what MS straight up produced. Therefore, I would question what they would produce as reliable anyways, for the hardware.

WIndows Phone / Mobile could have been a success but the constant direction change and uncertainty killed it.

I think the Windows phones were an outstanding product with great features, good bat life and seamless connectivity with all the other windows pc's in the house/office. I still use mine because it is super easy to edit estimates and invoices on the fly etc. No Fb, twitter, instagram or other social media stuff work but thats a good thing since those are just trash to me. I just wish it was still supported because competition is good for everyone.

Will this thing be ultra successful? Probably not even close. I still would like to see a ultra portable surface device like this. Not in a phone formfactor. Windows phone was a joke and never liked the idea. I do like the idea of a smaller fold-able surface though...but thats just me.

I wish I had a surface! It's a powerful PC in a convenient form factor. The phones on the other hand were not x86 nor x64 devices and were limited to the Windows Store. I guess this had that going for it, it would run Win 32 apps but who knows with what type of power or battery life.

Keep beating on that dead horse! It will come back to life...aaaaany minute now. Yup. Surely another few whacks will do it...aaaany time now.

I had the latest, newest at any given time and I had to use them cause we bought them, used a winphones continuous for two years and I am happy we don't have it anymore and only one out of 50 in the initial test group was happy.
They were so cheap after a while so it became our main phone OS and the Only OS we bought, but were quickly scrapped due to support issues and pressure from business.

Windows phone from Windows Mobile 6.5x is what killed them. they never recovered from that.
