Here’s Elon Musk’s “Submarine” for Rescuing Trapped Thailand Kids

You are really full of shit. It's not a distraction because it is being worked on while current rescue efforts on on-going..

So seven simultaneous rescue effort plans being pursued at the same time are not a disctraction? They all have to be weighed in on feasibility and success probability. so the elon effort is not a current rescue effort? define current, secondary, tertiary, elon and other rescue efforts and how to we manage them all separately and which one (s) to go with and when? give me a fkn break.

and we havent even started talking about testing.. so a sub blocking the passage for testing instead of getting these kids out by other means is a beneficial use of time and effort?

If a backup is needed I imagine they'll go with whatever plan will have the highest chance of success. No one engaged in the current rescue operations is being distracted by whatever backup plans are being developed. No one except people currently working on the rescue are allowed on site. What do you want engineers to do? Sit on their asses and do nothing?

How do you know it will block the passage? Are you there for the testing? Do you have full, up-to-date information from the dive team? Are you some kind of fucking psychic and can magically pull information out of your ass?

So Mega6 you think Musk should have kept quiet about the stuff he had at his disposal? Because it was a distraction? I know I wouldn't have been able to live with myself knowing that I could have helped someone but didn't. He probably feels the same way. This rescue operation is quite a large international team. I don't think it would have been a big distraction for one of the leaders to have a look at what he had to offer.

Elon is my superhero. guess he should add tank treads to his sub.

You have one hell of a raging hate boner. You clearly have not even bothered to do the tiniest amount of looking into it nor done anything remotely resembling critical thinking. You are so blinded by a raging inferno of hate for one person that you refuse to even think about things for one second. I don't know what the fuck your problem is, but I'm done. I'd have better luck arguing with a flat earther.

LOL you have the hardon for Elon too. dont worry, you have a lot of company to make a circle with. have a good one.

You know, many high altitude rescues use a fully enclosed stretcher to protect the casualty during transport. This is similar, but for water and sharp rocks... it's a good idea.

That contraption looks like a death trap for the kids and the scuba divers. The caves are very tight in some areas that requires the person to squeeze through cavities as small as 17 inches across. You can't turn the damn tube to fit through those sections. It might be fine if there is a large amount of space, but in this application, it's suicide for the kids and the divers. In fact, one of the SEAL divers have already died during the rescue. The only reason why it is taking so long between each rescue is the time to re-fill the tanks. He should be sending more scuba tanks instead.

Elon is a reject with reject ideas that doesn't work in the real world, but he pushes it because he has public funding to help subsidize his failures. I still think his hyperloop ideas are crap. He still thinks he can get humans to Mars by 2023 to 2026. Yeah right. Try getting a human to the moon first. It's not as easy as he thinks.

whom exactly benefits from putting a tesla roadster in orbit around the sun?

a Howard Hughes type. For me, I would that he gave me that car and I'm sure many felt that way but it was his car, his money to do with as he sees fit.

He has information on exactly how tight the tunnels are directly from the dive team. I'd say he, and they, know a lot more about what will and won't work than any of us. He mentioned they also have an inflatable version of the "sub" that can be tested in the cave without risk of causing a blockage. Apparently they're also developing a 3cm smaller version that will likely fit better. Either way, hopefully backup plans won't be needed.

His team very well could have been the first ones to bring it up simply because his various companies have the ability to make something quickly. For anyone else, it might take far too long to even make attempting anything not worth talking about.

my guess is this was already something they were working on possibly for the military or something and just said fuck it lets find a way to modify it for this.

actually putting the car into space was basically him telling NASA to suck it.. NASA said they were not allowed to have anything loaded on the falcon heavy for the test launch and so he mounted the car to it and said it was part of the rocket thus getting around the issue while also doing something funny and interesting.

It's possible. The version they're testing now is using part of the Falcon rocket, obviously heavily modified. If it wasn't a project he was already working on, I imagine its something he will continue to develop after this. He's already talked about it modifying the idea to work as an escape pod for people in space.

This mega6 guy seems like a stand up person. I've said posted some really stupid shit on forums before but usually just cut my losses and not try to defend my idiocy. This guy is taking his defense to a new level!

What musk did here is pretty dang cool no matter your opinion of him or his conglomerate. How shitty of a human do you have to be to not get that?

No. It's an off-cut of LOx filler tube which they welded mounts and seals to, and a couple air-tight endcaps with SCUBA-tank hookups. Precision job, I'm sure. But for an aerospace machine shop that does nothing but precision jobs, it's just an afternoon's work.

Also, no. SpaceX got burned hard on live payloads for the failed Falcon 1 test launches, and they haven't lofted one on a test launch since. The first F9 had a mass simulator, the first Dragon contained a wheel of cheese, and FH had its Tesla. And it's known that the first flights of Crew Dragon and BFR will be similarly irreverent. I expect "no live payloads on test launches" is now written in stone, as far as SpaceX is concerned.

As for "why car?" It was the right size, the right weight, made for some pretty sweet "free" publicity for SpaceX and Tesla. And, it ended up being the kind of ridiculous stunt that inspires people to look toward space in a way that they haven't since... I dunno, the Mars rovers a decade and a half ago? (I don't recall Curiosity getting the upswell that Spirit and Opportunity did. And I can't remember how their interest compared to Sojourner.)

On his video showing them testing the navigation through a small passage, commenters asked if it would work. His timely response was, "according to divers who have made the passage, yes." And the newer version is 30cm shorter. Even if it wouldn't fit through the bend it would still be viable for 3/4 of the distance (1.5/2 miles). What people are failing to realize is that time is of the essence and these boys are undernourished so having them make a 2-mile trip in darkness is not exactly a stellar idea, either.

While I think it's awesome that Elon is helping with what he can (regardless of reasons), I can't imagine having to be in that tiny cylinder. I'm not even claustrophobic and just the idea of having to get in there makes me nope out of there like crazy. Hopefully there will be other uses for this tiny submarine.

Looks like Mega6 has another account

Elon doesnt so things for publicity, money etc. Synical people just assume that because its the norm. He does things because he genuinely thinks he can helpor because he likes the challenge. He didnt start spaceX to make money, he did it because it was his passion and the means to barely get it off the ground.

Who the fuck cares? If what he provides helps then so be it. I swear people would rather have children die than have someone help and get good press from doing so.
We currently live in a country where people would rather see the people they hate fail more than them-self succeed. Look at politics.

Synical is not a word, don't worry we all know what u meant. please tell us more about your best friend and how he thinks from the inside out and how he is purely motivated as if he is the second coming of christ - because apparently u know him so well. when you have that much money to burn, token antics like this are cheap. It's like me going to a boating store, buying a life preserver and ups'ing it to thailand.

How naive of a person do you have to be to not understand a publicity stunt when you see it?

They got four more of the boys out today. Now four more remain, plus the coach. I'm a bit worried about the coach getting out of there. He's a lot bigger and I'm sure he'll be harder for the rescuers to help with the diving portion, and I can't see them carrying him out the way they are with the boys. I hope they can get everyone out of there ok. It's raining there also which is going to make things more difficult.

I assume they'll have to wait again whilst their air tanks are refilled before rescuing the other 4 kids, dunno what they'll do about the coach.

I think they should leave him inside for the next 4 months...or hogtie him and beat the living shit out of him with a wooden stick in public when they bring him out for deciding to do such a moronic thing.

Humm how did they get that deep into flood prone caves.

Yes...publicity stunt...totally the case. Did you even read through the tweets? Did you miss all the technical details shared leading up to this? How jaded do you have to be to not understand someone with a means trying to help when you see it?

Considering Elon Musk has been villainized lately by the press I fail to see how you think he has any control over coverage. Not to mention he's been rough on social media as well (the Facebook deletion).

Before people form a lynch mob perhaps we should actually wait to hear what happened from both him and the kids? No one knows why they were in the cave. All people are doing is making guesses as to what happened. Once everyone is out safely the appropriate authorities can piece together what happened and who, if anyone, is at fault.
