Cat 6

Is it possible to connect a cat5 connector to a cat6 cable? What are the disadvantages?

Yes it will work but you won't be able to take advantage of the Cat6 speeds, if you care about that.

most cat 6 is 23 gauge, cat 5 is 24 gauge...the plug will be too small for the wires.

Were you asking about the RJ45 connector?

If your talking about crimping a RJ45 connector head onto the Cat6 cable then the answer is Yes because it uses the same crimp connector.
If you talking about installing a Cat5 jack onto a cat 6 cable the answer is Yes. At work we use cat5 and cat6 keystone jacks that require a punch tool and they will work with 23 or 24 gauge wire.
When I had fiber installed to my house I relocated all my existing cat 5 cables and added 2 new cat 6 cables. I moved them all to a closet and re-punched all cables and tested with an Ideal SignelTEK II cable tester which tests the cables up to 1000 Mb/s. All cat5 and cat6 cables tested out to 1000 Mb/s. You just have to maintain the twist in the cable all the way to the separator on the jack where you punch the wire down. Hope this helps.
