In an interview with popular Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Microsoft’s Xbox Head Phil Spencer not only confirmed that his team has started planning the next Xbox console, but that they have also been working closely with Japanese developers on how to better design it. This could mean that the console will offer a unique gameplay experience, and not just brute performance.

The company has been discussing with Japanese developers on the innovations they want to bring to the whole architecture of the gaming industry. Spencer acknowledged the importance of resolution and framerate but also added that the future Xbox will not be just about that; they want to make something that would be significantly better than what came before.

Probably a good idea considering how poorly the Xbox has done in Japan but beating Nintendo and Sony on their home turf, good luck with that.

Totally agreed this is necessary every xbox has sold horrible in Japan.

It will be a touch battle Japanese like to promote their own.

I M sure the developer told them that don't even bother next time. Japanese have very high nationalism. They will not support a foreign company over a Japanese one. They tried 3 times and failed miserably. Japan is more into mobile platform then they are console wise nowadays. MS needs to forget Japan and focus more on US and the EU.

If they want to appeal to the japanese market it should come with a seperate 5tb hard drive preloaded with the finest anime and tentacle porn.

Yep this. They need to work close enough with the developers there to make sure they make games for the console for the world market, they are not going to do well in Japan.

Foreign stuff will always sell poorly in japan, japan is a walled garden.
If i was Japanese, just on the principle of the matter, i wouldn't get an XBox unless it shit bricks of gold, not after what the current administration has done across world stage. I'm all for best long term value, rewarding good products but sorry there are limits for everyone and i just dont see most foreigners buying American unless there was an outstanding reason, likely absolutely no choice(google, apple) or the mythical really good product.

MS needs to try China, Russia and most of the middle east.

The Japanese culture in general on top of the Japanese video game dev culture doesn't really FW Xbox. But that's a good thing.

PS5 will still destroy Microsoft and again, that's a good thing.

Trust me, you do not want to live in a world where Microsoft is good at anything. If you did, that would mean everything just sucks.

This is Microsoft playing lip-service to American consumers. It's all BS. Microsoft has never been popular in Japan and never will be.

We are damn lucky to have Nintendo and Sony in America.

Err
I always assumed PS sold better since it's a Japanese company.
And that's about it.

How much difference is between both systems?
Not actually that much in hardware.

If Microsoft wants to make headway they should try to get more Japanese game makers on board (means money as incentive) to make those Japanese games that are rather different then the western games.
I don't think its considerable more difficult coding for Xbox than PS.
Again, same hardware (well within reason)

Step 1: have games that make people want to buy the console
Step 2: ...

There is no step 2.

Yet another fast race up the dead end street. What they need to be doing is work with valve to get more controller supported games and be able to run a users steam library on the thing. They need to abandon their go nowhere store and embrace a current successful one.

But why? Why is ms in so many ways such a mess? Im scrambling to understand ms.. really.
Out of being extra extra greedy they lose in all fronts and aren't dominating in any. They could have kept computer gaming at the forefront take good care of it , try strategies to grow it, but no.. lets enter the console gaming because its a more closed environment from the get go, and leave computer games to be dominated by others. They did media center, perhaps too early, but they should kept it.. they didn't, now the area is dominated by other players and shit like that.. that market is a mess in many ways... so there is still time. Mobile, they buy a cellphone company, which made no sense, when anyone I mean anyone can provide the hardware... And if that wasn't clear back then to a lay person it should have been to an analyst... They did a mobile front end to their OS instead of a separate OS, the they support mobile for shit, didn't persue it aggressively at all, when they should have been hyper agressive. Then they take the desktop and shove the mobile front end on it for no reason, while probably asking the old w7 guard to 'retire'... Ah ms.

"However Yamaushi didn't like the deal, which he saw as a loss on a level similar to World War Two. He said he ranted a bit about Japanese values and identity but it went no-where. So in the end he said in Japanese "suck my yellow balls Mr Ballmer".

...

Frustrated Yamaushi stood on a chair, put his hands around his mouth and very slowly and in English said: "Hey Ballmer why don't you suck my tiny yellow balls.""

When asked by Microsoft for advice on the next-gen Xbox, most Japanese responded:

それを構築しないでください。

(Do not build it.)

"Unique gameplay experience"? Sounds like Nintendoesque gimmickry. I'll take brute performance. 'Murica.

I think there's more of a problem with their game lineup than the console itself. It's not horrible, but it's the only real difference between it, and other consoles. That's also a little harder to fix.

they just need a console that is disc free (optional). A system that has 4TB+ of disk space where you can download games and or stream games just like having a steam account or GeForce account. That's how games should be played. Just like the PC, people likes having a variety of a huge library of games where you can play any without switching discs. Also a system that can play any formats (blu ray, dvd, etc.), 4K support, Cast support and Built in Firewall and VPN for security.
