In addition to the lack of cross-play in Fallout 76, Todd Howard revealed in his interview with German PC magazine GameStar that Fallout 5 would be a single-player experience, just like previous installments. This may be a hint of Bethesda’s strategy going forward, in that multi-player experiences will be relegated to spin-offs, such as The Elder Scrolls Online.

Todd Howard said Bethesda will be focusing on single-player games because it would be better for them to keep the multi-player and single-player aspects separate, hence Fallout 76 being a multiplayer only game even with its solo option (which allows you to play outside a group, but not without anyone else around you).

Cash-Grab confirmed, at least they're "read between the lines" honest about it......

I have to admit, I have always wanted co-op in Bethesda open-world games, so I can't really be mad about them making this push with Fallout 76. I guess we'll see how it plays out.

Realistically I would have preferred private co-op only, though.

Original interview is behind a paywall. Dang, I wanted to see how Bethesda worded that exactly :(

Same.

"Designed as a single player game" doesn't necessarily rule it out though, depend on how it was worded in the interview. Fallout 76 is clearly designed for MP from the ground up, but they could easily have drop-in coop as a tacked on, optional feature to a "single player game" in Fallout 5.

Bethesda has to be considering it. Not only is it a frequently requested thing, but it makes the game much more attractive to streamers (which is great for sales and PR). Modders almost achieved it in Skyrim... The project ran out of steam IIRC, but they got far enough to show that it's technically possible and practical.

What I want from Fallout 5 is vehicles. PLEEEEZ. The world would be whole again. I want it to be a road trip like Hard Truck Apocalypse where your base is your truck, that you can upgrade and weaponize and improve, and move trough various regions as you progress in the game.

I don't really play multiplayer games - not sure I have the time. I prefer a single player game. I can play when I have time and not try to schedule time with friends. (Most of my friends I used to game with are married, have kids, and not much free time.)

Good . . .at least the train did not come off the rails completely (and the franchise ruined IMO).

I'm fine with this. This lets me know that there is a clear successor to Fo4 coming for the SP experience and it is absolutely my choice as to if I want to bother with an online version.

Here is to hoping the fallout (no pun intended) from fallout 76 does not tank the franchise like Andromeda did so there can be a Fallout 5.

If Fallout 76 fails they will continue to make Fallout 5. The multiplayer games are going to be smaller side projects requiring less game devs and money.

In all honesty they’re barely risking anything with f76. It was always a side “what if” project for f4, heavily uses f4 assests woth the new map (easy to produce) and has no npcs like sp fo record voiceover for. So the work for devs was quite limited and there’re definitely going to be a fanbase, cause fallout and multiplayer.

He mentioned Fallout 5, due to the fallout of the fans, over the multiplayer only Fallout 76 reveal.

This is hardly surprising but good to hear and now that I know this I can just ignore F76 like I have ES online.

I am a little surprised that the backlash got them to publicly comment on Fallout 5. They're usually tight lipped about their games and I don't think they've even mentioned the next Elder Scrolls game which should be next.

This is what i thought was the case with Fallout 76. They were making it into an ESO but only the fallout universe. Not surprised by this really.

Fallout/TES multiplayer could work, in the style of something like Borderlands where you can play with a few friends but don't always have to be tethered to each other and still receive personal loot but allow you to trade it to someone else.

I always wanted to pilot a Vertibird. I never understood why I couldn't hijack one in previous games.

A proper "Enclave Style" Vertibird with multiple Gatling guns at that (laser as well as bullet), with the on-board missile/rocket launchers, unlike the heavily nerfed stuff the Brotherhood of Steel was using in Fallout 4.

One thing that the old Terminator FPS games got right from the 90s was when you could use Resistance jeeps, and then hijack a mean ol' HK Aerial.

Edit: just realized that those Terminator FPS games were made by Bethesda!

Terminator Skynet.......wow, yes. First Game that went Vertical with 3D models...you could climb into ruins and abandoned buildings...shoot-down on the people beneath you.....also great use of mouse-look. And the vehicles were great.....absolutely amazing game that was ignored because everyone went batsheet over Quake and then QuakeWorld, which to me remain not much more than glorified tech demos.

I want to believe Bethesda has a deeper gameplay model than expecting everyone to tank every battle in their open world, but this game has no cover mechanic....your sole defensive move is to crouch.....in an open world FPS with the type of imprecise gunplay that F4 offers, even if Vats is available in real-time, I dunno...I'm really not liking what I'm seeing.
