Best Multiplayer FPS of all time...

Did you ever try Frag Ops for UT2k4?

It was like a fast paced action movie version of counter strike. It had the perfect blend of UT and CS gameplay.

I didn't! I wish I had known about it back when I played UT2004 a lot. I still have it of course, but I doubt I have anyone to play it with now. It kinda sounds like the other mods I listed. They were also fast paced, somewhat tactical with real-world weaponry.

There are numerous multiplayer games announced this e3 but division 2 seems more energetic.

Quake > UT > Tribes > everything else

I was never a Tribes player (purely timing and circumstances) but that's a good order for things. Quake>UT>Else

Right when Q3A and UT came out, I lived in an apartment building that a good friend of mine managed. Which meant a lot of our other friends were also tenants. I estimate between all of us we probably had a third of the units there. We also happened to be a test site for cable internet service before it was wide-spread in the Seattle area. I encouraged everyone to get the service, I built people computers, and we had pretty much non-stop UT and Q3A matches rolling off of my servers at any given time. It was great.

After that I moved into a house with my brother and some friends, (which I've described in numerous other threads, so I'll skip it here...) That was even more amazing. :D

I always favored Q3A, but we definitely played our share of UT.

I never cared for vanilla Quake's over-reliance on rockets and grenades, but that game had sooooo many mods. You could play it a hundred different ways and there were a lot of people dedicated to all of them.
Q2 and Q3 were loads of fun, too. I loved playing Rocket Arena in Q3.
Unreal Tournament was a favorite, but it feels like I didn't play it for that long.
It's tough to deny CS's greatness. I probably had more fun playing CS back in '99-'01 than any other shooter I can recall.

PC elitists might cringe, but the early Halo games were fantastic and highly competitive in MP.

Team Fortress for QuakeWorld was amazing. There was no better Quake mod. It laid the groundwork for all future class-based team multiplayer games (Battlefield 1942 was seriously fun, but it was just TF with vehicles and large maps).

Counterstrike took team-based combat to the next level. it was seriously fun.

Both these games survive today, in modern form. TF2 added a lot of depth that the original was missing, and Counterstrike has been mostly unchanged since beta 6.

I stilll play both on the occasion (when I want to get my ass kicked by kids), so both have great longevity.

And if I must answer the question that everyone will pose in this thread, yes Q3A >> UT99. But both were quickly ditched by me for the more resilient CS and BF 1942.

I was a railgun guy. I'd use it at close or long ranges. I'm not quite as good as I used to be, but still favor it a bit. I'd run right around a corner and pull an instant head shot. It really pissed off a lot of my friends. :D

Iirc I got bored from CS around beta 5 and started playing more action half life which a friend introduced me to, but that one never really seemed to have caughed on, was good fun, but a bit rude around the edges.

Realistic damage effects and realistic arsenal?

Those Action mods died because they had to compete with Rainbow Six. There's only a very small audience who wants that level of realism in their games, and a major studio had better marketing to corner that audience.

This is kinda out of left field, but the one I had to most fun with was Rainbow Six Rogue Spear/Urban Ops. We used to play on the small, symmetrical maps, or do the missions co-op. They were fun as hell.

This man preaches the gospel.

I can't say I've played a multiplayer game that encapsulated joy and time as much as Tribes 2 did. The first Tribes is a definite contender though.

All I've ever wanted is a proper new Tribes, shame that it won't happen. I tried that Mid Air game but was turned off with skiing being a bound function plus that it has an average of 40 players right now.

RTCW and later Wolfenstein: ET. I had a ton of fun with both of those games and played them for quite a while. I loved the different mods and maps available. One of the reasons I don't bother at all with FPSs anymore is the fact that since you can't really run your own servers it kills any real variety with the games. The variety of mods and maps is what made the games great.

Rocket Arena 3(Quake 3) and ut2004 were the shit. Battlefield bad combat 2 was also awesome, especially the Vietnam mod.

So far Tribes 1 and 2.

BF 1942 DC mod, BF Nam and BF2 + mods are all my favorites.

Quake 1 Deathmatch / TF / CTF.. I would usually connect using GameSpy over 28.8k modem.

I'm not sure why the original tribes or tribes 2 wasn't just updated like was done with cs to source? The gameplay in tribes was perfect it just needed graphics update like counter strike..
Tribes had done everything it needed to and all the latter sequels only messed it up. midair is probably the worst.

I've got a buddy that just hit the big 5-0, that swears up and down that BF1942: Desert Combat mod is the greatest MP evar.

Dc was awesome. Maps, vehicles, weapons. All insanely good. They went on to develop bf2 then front lines. Which was the end I guess.
