It's On Like Donkey Kong

As their attorney, I advise them to release the arcade version of Mario Bros.

I really really liked PONG ... Donkey Kong? Not so much ...

I like Warlords better than Pong. There's a bit more strategy, and if you actually have four people playing, it gets ridiculous in the best sort of way. :D I don't know if there was an arcade version, but at least with the home version...

Edit: Yep, there is an arcade version, and it looks great. I know what I'm playing with my kids tonight. :D

In late 2009, the American Classic Arcade Museum was approached by the people that put on the PAX shows and asked us if we would provide a classic arcade exhibit for them at the event. We agreed to fill a 2,800 square foot room with games for their first PAX-East event in the spring of 2010. When trying to come up with a list of stuff to bring, we tried our best to bring a variety of stuff & also brought along the creators of arcade classics like Ms. Pac-Man, Quantum, Jr. Pac-Man and Food Fight. We made a point of bringing something from the origins of arcade gaming and waffled a bit on either Computer Space and Pong. In the end, we took Pong because it was a multiplayer game.

When the show started and people started to fill the room, we found the crown to be a lot younger than we had expected and were worried that some of the older games (like Pong) would not be accepted. It turned our Pong was the most popular game we took that year.

For PAX-East in 2011, we decided to take a different group of games than we had the first year. What was the biggest complaint we had? "Hey, why didn't you bring Pong?"

If there is anything that the Atari coin-op division consistently got right, it was cooperative/competitive multiplayer games. There isn't much better than games like Fire Truck, Gauntlet and Warlords. Fire Truck celebrated its 40th Anniversary this month.

Agreed! I also love Marble Madness, Paperboy, and Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters. (only the last one is multiplayer, but...) I never played Fire Truck. I'm going to give it a whirl as soon as I get a chance.

Fire Truck is a two-player game where one person steers the cab of a fire truck and one steers the real wheels of the ladder section. If you don't have two players, the game will never play right. To play this by yourself, check out Smokey Joe. Same game, but for one player only.
