Anybody know if RST 15.x + trim works?

Looked all over, can't find any answer.

Currently have twin Raptors in raid1, would like to simply swap out with 860 evo's, copy, replace, repeat until I have two 860's in a mirror.

I could break the raid but with the same size going in, it's not worth the effort.

TRIM was introduced in RST 11.5 or somesuch, some 7 years ago. I would presume subsequent versions continue the support.

With that said, it's probably not necessary. RAID is not backup, since it doesn't protect you from data corruption, so if the data is worthwhile you'll still want an offline backup. SSDs are, in general, less prone to failure than their spinning disk predecessors - you know, given the lack of moving parts - and I would be more likely to recommend simply purchasing a larger SSD or even running them in RAID 0.

For reference, my main PC currently boots from a pair of 1TB 850 EVO drives in RAID0 on Windows 10.
 
Raid 0 was introduced but they never mentioned 1.
True 1 is not a "backup" but I've never had data corruption running raid 1 for well over 10 years on multiple systems.

If you don't mind RST bitching about your raid degraded when you simply unplug one drive for a month or so then resynch.

I don't do that but you could.

If you are not running more then one RAID you can do the raid recovery but I have two sets.
 
Ah, from what I'm reading as of RST 14.x at least that TRIM was not supported on the consumer RST for RAID 1. Apparently the 'enterprise' RST drivers support it, but you don't get that on a consumer board.

You could always use software RAID 1 though within Windows, which would support it. And also, use of almost any modern drive that isn't kept 100% full and under heavy load the drives will mostly self-manage via their built in garbage collection anyways.

I wasn't implying that RAID1 is susceptible to data corruption; I've never experienced that either. However, 10 years ago there wasn't such a thing as ransomware that sneaks onto your system and encrypts all your shit then demands money to unlock it. Offline or cloud based backups are the only defense against such things.

Still cryptic but if each drive has it's own garbage collection then in raid 1 the 860 evo should take care of itself if trim is enabled.
I checked and my 7 machine is but I currently do not have any SSD's in that machine, yet.

Trim for Intel® RST and RAID 0 was not supported at all under Windows 8 / 2012 due to some limitations with the Intel® RST driver.



This was fixed in Intel® RST driver release 14.6.0.1029, and the latest Intel® RST driver supports Trim for RAID 0 under Windows 8 / 8.1 / 10 and Windows Server 2012. This is natively supported by these OS versions and is normally enabled by default.

All of that is specific to RAID 0, and ep0x73 is interested in RAID 1, where TRIM is not supported.
