“Solo” Box Office a Historic Failure for “Star Wars”

I just watched a disappointing SW movie in January, why would I want to go see another one a few months later?

Too many too quickly, Disney. This should have shown in December.

If they take an iconic role/character and butcher it then yes (eg. Clark Kent being rebooted as a misunderstood black teenager). I like movies that have minority leads as long as they’re original and not insulting me by pandering.

Ah, so you like minority leads, just not if they're playing a white role.

"The Rescuers" in 1977 had a Playboy picture in the window. Wasn't noticeable unless you knew where to pause the film (which would promptly melt). "Hollywood Daffy" (1946) had a rape joke. The hidden bullshit you refer to has been around since the invention of media.

Yeah a Playboy hidden vs making the king look like he is getting an erection when he sees his daughter are on the same level....

FFS.....

There were so many great parts in all the prequels. Qui Gon Jinn was great, Obi Wan was great, Darth Maul was great, Mace Windu was great, Count Dooku was great, the light saber battles were fucking awe
some in all of them, pod racing was cool as shit, seeing Yoda and what he can really do was cool as shit. In the original movies, the force was something you could use to slowly move rocks and that's about it. In the prequels the force made the Jedi and Sith almost super heroes! The final battle between Anakin and Obi Wan is still one of the best on screen duels ever. Seeing how Palpatine rose to power, seeing the Jedi order in its heyday. Yes there were lots of cringe worthy dialogue scenes but the story was still Star Wars and those cringe worthy scenes made up only about 15% of the movies at best.

Anikik built and names C3PO, literally his only buddy. Yet somehow forgets him. Lucas is a shit writer and director that had a one hit wonder series.

Edit: Lucas has one skill, special fx, and he was damn good at it.

Pansexual isn't gay...

I mean make your point but do it well, ffs.

Are the SJW aspects of the new Star War's movies heavy handed? No not really. That's not the point. More and more people are fed-up with the hypocrisy and deceit of political correctness. More and more people are fed-up with SJW telling us who is good and who is bad when those distinctions are based upon adherence to the SJW agenda. We are sick of being fed this crap during Sunday's football games and a line has been crossed by adding this nonsense to the Star Wars universe.

SJW poison everything they touch and many of us are pushing back. The old Star Wars was politically neutral; it did not matter if you were liberal or conservative. The old Star Wars had strong male and female characters. Good and evil was not gender specific. Disney and Hollywood need to be taught that Political Correctness DOES NOT SELL.

Bingo!

ROFLMAO!

You guys are hilarious! :D

Yes, the "issue" is people going to the movie for the entertainment value and not attaching politics to some science fiction work which does not take place in this galaxy!

Here is my corollary.

If you watched that film and all you could see was HEAVY political commentary, then that's another issue altogether.

If you did not go to watch the film for the purposes of being entertained, then you did not understand the film, Period.

It bears saying one more time.

People who attach political agendas to fictional movies get what they deserve. Keep on being miserable while the rest of us enjoy the entertainment. Although, you guys are proving to be entertaining as well. :)

If all you draw from fiction is entertainment, then I think you have missed more than you have gathered. That's truly ok. You vote with your wallet, and I will vote with mine.

Did you even watch the originals? Leia is the ultimate, to use your parlance, "SJW" fantasy. She regularly shuts down males with quick terse words, rescues Han and Luke from being cornered in the detention block, shoots stormtroopers while Luke is messing with his grappling hook, strangles Jabba to death, is part of the command crew for the Endor attack force, the list goes on and on.
Luke is following exactly what Obi-Wan and Yoda did. They both turned into hermits and fell out with the force ... ya totally doesn't fit does it.
Wasn't Yoda and Obi-Wan in hiding because of the jedi holocaust initiated by the empire? They didn't became grumpy hermits by choice they were saving their asses, and they definitely didn't fall out with the force.

The difference between an sjw character and a strong female character is that one is a woman with a chip on her shoulder and the other is just a badass character who happens to be a woman. That's a bigger distinction than you can imagine. Every scene of Leia was justifiable and never felt forced or self-serving in the original trilogy. In TLJ the refusal of divulging the plan by holdo is completely self serving. It doesn't make any sense why she couldn't share the plan apart from drilling in a point. And ultimately causing countless deaths and the whole guerilla action was initiated by that. So it is self serving on two levels even.

I am not into the whole bitching about changes, them having female characters or any other thing that the fucking babies today bitch about with every fucking movie and game that comes out. However I had zero desire from the trailers to see the movie.

Rouge One at least added to a know story. This one appeared to be nothing more than them creating a new story for a character that had nothing to do with lore but hoped to get money off the character name alone.

You realize saying that a minority can't ever be Superman indisputably makes you a racist, right?
If he's racist for that then that makes all the people outraged about casting Scarlett Johansson as the Major in Ghost in the Shell racists as well.

SJW, not SJW...

All I'm saying is that you take a risk with a political film.

I want to be super clear: TLJ was a crap film on its own merit, which manifested in Solo getting fewer viewers.

It's politics were a contribution to its failure, but by far not the sole cause. It just wasn't entertaining.

GOD! that entire implied thing with the robot was disturbing, some awkward questions with the daughter "what does he do with the robot?"

Well the movie was PG-13.

I would say at 13+ you should be able to give her the answer as you understand it. If you really brought a little one to the flick the standard kid answer should do... unless you feel the need to also explain every adult aimed joke in a Pixar movie to her as well. ;)

Or he simply grew up and became more confident he could blast his message and still have a job. :)

The messages are very clear in the first Star Wars flick.

His Uncle sits by and does nothing... he knows the Empire is evil, but its not my fight. Turns out there was no one there for him when they came for him. Of course its all wrapped in Flash Gordon, still there is no denying there where messages in the movie. IMO what George lost as many older film makers do is the sense of poetry about their work... sometimes saying less is more powerful.

I do hear what your saying... and sure I enjoyed Subtle George more as well. The themes where their in the first movie, he just didn't come right out and beat anyone over the head with senate speeches. Although I will say the "So this is how democracy dies, with thunderous applause" line was pretty fantastic. :)

Actually what you're spinning isn't true. I said he directly contradicted himself. It's not subtle versus overt. It's George Lucas and what he believed as a Young Man versus what George Lucas believes now trying to rewrite his own history. And by the way many agreed that his ex-wife was the heart behind the original trilogy which is probably why everything went downhill when his marriage did. She contributed to so many iconic moments including the death of Obi-Wan, the mouse droid, the kiss Leia gives Luke on the cheek before they do the swing. Little touches that gave the movie a lot of heart. Heart that was missing from the prequels when George was fat and political.

So yes, young George Lucas contradicts old George Lucas. Not subtle versus overt but actual full-on contradiction. It just isn't what you are trying to spin here.

Ah, so you like minority leads, just not if they're playing a white role.

You realize saying that a minority can't ever be Superman indisputably makes you a racist, right?

Huh?! No, that doesn't.

Superman is a white guy. From comics to TV to movies. Changing him now would be awkward. Even an alien from Krypton can't just change colors like that.

Why not make a new character as a minority. Another guy from Krypton that comes to Earth. Not Superman, but a different Superguy (or girl...). Instead of changing things.

Let's take Blade and make him a white dude from Seattle. Or Lando and make him some Froggy Fresh dude. Nah, that's shit, too. Same exact thing. It's not cool to just change things like that, regardless of race/gender/whatever. Those characters are already defined and have been around for decades. Why change them up?

It doesn't make anyone a racist for thinking that. They just don't want the already defined characters to switch around for no reason whatsoever or just to please some people. Create a new character. A bad ass dude that can start fresh. Black, white, whatever. Male, female... The canvas is empty. Go for it. Don't go changing what's already been created. For some of us, the pre-defined characters are like the Mona Lisa. Start painting over it and we get touchy. Absolutely nothing to do with being racist or sexist or any of that.

I just got back from the theater. I had a choice of two movies since it was going to cost me the same no matter which I went to; Solo or The Princess Bride. I think it's enough to say that my son and I watched The Princess Bride. We had a great time watching that 31 year old movie on the big screen. It was a lot of fun. I doubt I would have enjoyed Solo nearly as much.

INCONCEIVABLE

INCONCEIVABLE

A couple of the theaters around here play old classics during the summer. I would love to see the princess bride again on a big screen. Even though I did like Solo I have to admit if TPB was playing we would have went to see it as well.

Now we should all stop going back and forth about race/gender changes of old roles, and accusing people of racism for feeling a characters physical looks should always be constant. IMO a good actor should be able to play any part. I wish Hollywood would actually start casting completely different looking actors to play old roles.... hire the ACTOR based on their ability to act not their looks. No one goes and sits through a production of Hamlet and yells... "Boooo you don't look like Hamlet at all" "booo my Hamlet looks like Mel" (ok a Mel Gibson joke, my bad, couldn't help it)

Anyway the whole point of that last paragraph was to get to this here joke;
“You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.”

In two weeks it's Raiders of the Lost Ark on the big screen. If I can scrounge up the money I'll be going to see that as well.

Oh FFS, who cares about SJW stuff except the people that keep crying about it. Wahh wahh wahh..

The movie failed for a few simple reasons and it has nothing to do with your political agenda.

Let’s wait and see. If the next SW film tanks as well your statement will be proved to be incorrect.

They cast an unknown actor in the lead, barely advertised for the movie, and put it out within 6 months of another Star Wars movie. Is anyone really that surprised it failed?

Can we rename this thread into. "Closed minded people fail to understand the world and accept any sort of change."?

I wonder what would make people like those on the first page of this thread happy. Anything other than an all white, all straight cast of characters with a male hero seems to be awfully triggering to them.

Also Star Wars has always had gay stuff, so I'm not sure what people are flipping out about. C3PO is basically a gay stereotype robot. He's gold, has limp wrists, talks with a lisp and an effeminate British accent, and he and R2D2 have fought like an old gay married couple from the very beginning.

It’s not about “change”, it’s about people getting sick of having an agenda rammed down their throats at every turn. The new SW movies have been egregious in their “SJW” bullshit, to the extent that it has ruined the storyline. If they had made a compelling new series along the lines of the original trilogy, fans would have ate it up no matter the cast. Instead, they remade episode 4 with another played out “tough chick that can do anything a man can do but better” lead, castrated the hero of the OT, and killed/pussified the most popular character (Solo). I don’t care that Lando is “pan sexual”, I just always assumed everyone was in the original trilogy , it’s the fact that they went in with an agenda and wrote around it. It’s so brutally and blatantly apparent that you can’t suspend belief and just enjoy the movies, it’s a constant slap in the forehead that someone is using a beloved franchise as a soapbox.

As a FanBoy I loved it! its a fun movie and will see it lots more times. I grew up with Star Wars and got to see A new Hope at the drive-ins in 1977. I spent years running the worlds longest running Star Wars fan her in Australia Club (StarWalking) and I cannot find anything wrong with Solo the 50+ club members I have spoken to all think the same thing we all loved it i don't know anyone in real life that is a fan (a fan is someone that might have a Star Wars number plate or Star Wars tattoo or even named a child or two after Star Wars heroes and will allays have Star wars models/books and posters up around there home) I can check off all on that list. I love Marvel Movies and go to see them opening day but I'm not a real "FAN" I just like them a lot. I think the shock of TLJ is what stuffed Solo and I hate how Rian Johnson took what J.J. Abrams set up in TFA the threw it away. I only hope Rian Johnson is never allowed to get his hands on anything star was again. Ron Howard did a real good job on Solo and will be happy to see any other movie he makes! I feel Rian Johnson TLJ Fuck Up robbed Solo of its success but time will tell.

Of course I don’t know if any of it is true but I think Ron Howard only did the final 3’rd of the movie, rescreening certain scenes to fit the final chapter of the movie. Regardless I liked it a lot, the lighting in the first part of the movie sucked though, really made it hard to understand the underground of Correllia. I really hope they do the next two, they left the door wide open for them to bring us to episode 4.

Actually not all supermans are white guys. There are black supermans in other parts of the multiverse. I don't follow comics but know that steel (man of steel) was a black man and took over for superman for awhile after his death in the comics although don't know if he just went by man of steel instead of superman, do know he had the S on his suit so maybe he shouldn't count toward the black superman list. There is a black spiderman. There is now a black female iron man. The last two not so much because of different universes but because of them passing the torch to another. So you wouldn't be making any changes anything that hasn't already been changed in comics for years.

Yeah a Playboy hidden vs making the king look like he is getting an erection when he sees his daughter are on the same level....

Nice strawman there. The point was that it didn't "just happen" in the '90s which was the premise of your post.

I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt. He hopefully means "CAL-EL is a white guy", which I actually agree with. I'm cool with the comics making new characters different races/genders/whatever, but well established characters being changed for little to no reason throws me off.

If he's racist for that then that makes all the people outraged about casting Scarlett Johansson as the Major in Ghost in the Shell racists as well.

But if you place a (insert random race other than white) in a role of a character that was originally white, that's fine. because, white privilege or something. No matter how weird or inappropriate it is to the original material.

Hollywood is all about overcompensating these days. as long as it's convenient. curious as to how many senior executives are women and minorities.......

Superman is Kal-El, AKA Clark Kent. Superman is an established character. There can be other Kryptonians of other races, but Superman is an established character.

"Black female" Iron Man is a new character called Ironheart, not Iron Man. She exists in the the Prime Universe, AKA the main continuity.

"Black" Spider-Man is a character that exists in a different universe. He was shoved into the Prime Universe now because "muh diversity," but both Miles Morales and Peter Parker exist as independent entities.
