This just in:
My regular internet connection went down, so I connected my mobile to use it's connection, but for some reason windows will automatically disable the NDIS connection after a few minutes, and there is no way to turn it back on. Clicking on enable does nothing on the connection.

The only way to get it back up is to reboot, but then it again only lasts 2-3 minutes before it is disabled yet again.

Last time this worked on the same computer using the same phone. So what is this craziness now? Do I really need to reinstall windows or what?

He's tethering. I do the same occasionally as my ISP is a WISP out in the middle of nowhere and has frequent issues.

There would be nothing about NDIS if he was using the phone as a wifi hotspot.

The greatest idea ever when you have kids and the internet goes down. In my day we'd go outside and play, nowadays kids act like it's the end of the world.

I'd love to go out and play, but while the net is down all my email is bouncing.

Thanks, I've not done a physical phone tether in forever, even my desktop has WiFi now so on the occasions I've needed a backup I've always used WiFi.

I played around with this earlier this morning and came across this: https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/solved-usb-tethering-on-windows-10/. The key for me was updating the Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device in Device Manager as shown in the link under How do I fix USB tethering not working on Windows 10 using Method 2. Once I did that on my Surface Book 2 15" using a Verizon Galaxy Note 8, after a reboot the device now shows "Samsung Mobile USB Remote NDIS Network Device". And the connection shows up in Network Center.

Been using this for a couple of hours this morning continuously with no issues. Hope this helps. I'm on 1803.

You should look into outsourcing your email hosting.

People that self host exchange/email servers (myself included) typically do this to avoid outsourcing our private data to be mined/sold. Host my own exchange server, nextcloud, web etc. No ragrets

Ah I see how that might actually be worth the compromise. That's smart.

It's my belief that is you outsource hosting by paying for services like Gsuite or O365 your data is not harvested at all. It's only free services like Gmail that are harvested.

Get an european server, GDPR protects your privacy. Fine can be up to 4% of the infringing companys turnover or 20 million eur max.

You can get a cheap cloud server for self hosting services. If you distrust cloud email like gmail/outlook, do you also not use other Google/Facebook etc services? Not use Android/iOS? Because if you do then its a bit pointless to worry about email?

If something gets set over the internet, Expect it to get harvested if it has any value.

What I find really crazy about windows10 is how on the startmenu they disallowed subfolders. They flatten everything out.
Where I work an application suite is about to be deployed and it categorises the software by type (say... simulation) then application (say matlab) then version (2013b, 2015b, 2017b )

imagine how crap that looks and how ridiculous it is to navigate on windows10.... This is under testing and the only solution was to buy a start10 like software and deploy it ALL because microsoft messes around with the framework they make available so others can utilise... if the framework is no longer stable, no longer consistent and then messes with establish methodologies and other workflows why stick with it? central IT and now looking at permitting OSX on the network as the consistency is lost and alot of things are going to the cloud

This is paranoia at its finest. What makes you think you ISP isn't scraping everything? Even TOR isn't safe.

So stop using the Internet?

China has been known to steal PDF's of value. It's not paranoia. It's just something I expect. If what your sending isn't encrypted or secured somehow, Just expect it to be stolen/taken.

But again, it has to be of value. Most of the trash out there doesn't have a ton of value unless your building a profile of someone.

Heh yeah the removal of submenus made the menu completely unusable and unless you remember which search word you need to use for the app you have to find, you're out of luck.
Also they totally porked the search by limiting the search separately to apps, files etc. in addition to the already existing limitations of search indexing that do not include everything on the computer.

Three months ago I've upgraded my home PCs to Windows 10 straight from Windows 7. I've always loved seventh Windows but everyone advised me to upgrade to 10. As you have mentioned, Windows 10 has some serious problems. It's very uncomfortable for me. Thinking about downgrading to Windows 7 again.

I have a spare PC that I use to switch between Linux Mint 18.3 and Windows 10. I removed the SSD with Linux and inserted my SSD with Windows 10 so I can upgrade it to 1803. I had to use the download tool to get it. After installing it, it removed my free windows games that I had installed which were on windows 7. I had to reinstall them. It also removed gagets and I had to reinstall that as well.

I also have O&O Shutup 10 installed, and it noticed the update and made corrections as necessary. I don't know WTF MS would remove these apps. What is funny is it said that they were not compatible with this version of 10, but I simply reinstalled them and they seem to work fine.

As for classic shell, it's also working fine. After the reboot, it also had a pop-up that said it noticed a new version and made some adjustments. It's a shame that class shell is no longer in development, and it's a shame that stupid MS did not give users an option like this.

I don't know. I'm still not sold on windows 10. I think if you are a person that simply uses their pc to surf the web, check email, use office apps, then the best bet may be going to Linux Mint or even Zorin.

They removed functionality from them years ago as they were a nightmare to secure. You should have gotten an patch in Windows 7 that took away the gadgets manager.

The only gagets that I use are the weather and calendar. Is there a 3rd party app that does the same?

Which "one calendar"? I did a google search there were quite a few with the same name. First ones on the list - from Microsoft in their store - no thanks. Prefer free.

Thanks. That was the app I was using - 8gadgetpack, but it was an older version. I downloaded the latest version and now it works again without 10 complaining.

I will still fire it up on occasion pretty much exactly like you do. I dont use any weird 3rd party gadgets either, just the stock clock, weather, and calendar gadget.

Well one weird issue while I was creating a Word document using Office 2007. While trying to save it, I got an error about winword.exe was not auhorized to save the file - permission error. WTF? I had to go into Defender and add the MS exe files. Here is the error:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\WINWORD.EXE has been blocked from modifying C:\Users\xxx\OneDrive\Documents\Custom Office Templates by Controlled Folder Access.

So now I think Defender is a POS since it can't determine that my Office 2007 is a MS application. LOL

Or you got one of the multiple viruses that target Office. POS anyway.

I rolled back to 1703 version. The new version 1803 is too buggy. I shouldn't have to fix items like the Office EXE files, even though it's an older Office version. I guess MS wants you to move to the 2016 version. I also wonder if Office 2003 even works. The more I use 10, the less I like it. I may have to stick with 7/8.1. I already have a 8.1 pc that I have in the wings ready to be used after 7 is no longer updated. If I do stay with 7, it will be a VM in Linux.
