John Carmack has been working on a new VR video playback technology that he claims will “set the bar for VR quality.” Coming to Oculus Go and newer Gear VR phones, the video playback tech allows for (presumably stereoscopic) 5K x 5K playback at 60FPS.

To show it off, the company is planning a re-release of the animated short Henry, which Carmack says will “set a new bar for immersive video quality.” Henry was the first VR short film released by Oculus Story Studio, the company’s in-house narrative studio which ended up closing in 2017.

Yeah........sure.......

Rage was supposed to be groundbreaking too.

You may not like his games (I don't except for the original Doom/Doom II), but he's as smart as they come with the tech aspect. I trust him more than I would almost anyone else.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I think the vast majority of his games were fantastic! Even Orcs and Elves on the Nintendo DS was nothing but old school awesome!

I can imagine a VR TV series or movie just a few years away. Imagine watching while you hover around looking into things, or skip watching the main characters and follow the mail man for the entire day. Maybe that's what ghosts are, maybe we are virtual characters and there are payed users to watch us.

Is there already VR hardware that pushes 5k x 5k? (n)

You need customers for a demo, and they need accessible hardware to view it.
