In a "State of Mobile" press release today, Fortnite developer Epic Games went over some in-development improvements to the mobile battle-royale carpal tunnel inducer. Such upgrades are a customizable in-game HUD, voice chat, performance, and stats.

However buried in the middle of the post, they announce that Fortnite is coming to Android, with a summer release. Always interesting how developers wait to release stuff on the platform with nearly 90 percent of the market share.

We are targeting this summer for the release. We know many of you are excited for this release, and we promise that when we have more information to share, you’ll hear it from us first.

Android gets a lot of stuff last because it’s a fucking pain in ass to develop on and a much smaller portion of the users spend money.

I don't understand in the slightest why any shooter is on a touch device. I don't think there is a worse possible way to play something like that outside perhaps VR. I mean honestly how shit does your PC have to be to want to play this on a cellphone?

Because you can play it anywhere and even when someone else is using the home PC.

I just want to how this works on a mobile device. Is it cross platform play? Mobile against PC?

Cross play for android will work like iOS - by default you will only matchmake against mobile players unless you opt in to displaying with friends on another platform, in which case you end up in that bucket instead.

I was told about this a couple of weeks ago. Really amazing how far we've come. Truly cross platform multiplayer FPS on fucking phone.

This reason made sense over a decade ago when you had to spend $1k+ for a decent gaming PC. At this point you can get a decent refurb if money is tight for a few hundred tops. I couldn't imagine having only one PC shared between people. That would be awful.

Meanwhile there are still people in this world who struggle to get meals...

Maybe if this was 2008 :p Now people are on their mobile devices more than ever.

Workmates play pubg together all the time on lunch break. And even on spare moments on slow work days. Boss: "you can go home early", so what do they do? Play for an hour or so before going home. One of the guys even has a decent PC with VR at home.

I know quite a few people that don't have a home PC in my circle of friends. They all use tablets or their phones. I can't believe how many of my children's friends at school don't have home PCs. People are moving away from PCs for the convenience of a tablet. Unless you're a gamer or doing a lot of work at home, there is no 'need' for a home PC like there was a few years ago as our mobile devices can do anything that a general PC could do.

Again this begs the question of "Why the F would you willingly play a FPS on a touch screen?" There is literally no worse input method.

My comment is in the context of gaming. Obviously people who don't game don't need a PC.

Fortnite plays pretty well on a touch screen. It pairs you against other people on mobile devices and has a pretty similar overall feel to the PC version.

Just because there is a “better” way of doing something doesn’t mean everyone else is an idiot.

I partially answered. You can take it with you and easily find real life buddies who will play with you. The guy with the decent rig has pubg on PC too, but fewer friends that can play on PC.

What people forget to mention is that while android dominate the global market in specific markets like the USA the picture is much more even. Apple typically has more than 40% market share in developed rich economies. Also they probably do a little extra now days to get developers of major titles to ship on iOS first. Also apple dominates the high end phones, which is important for games.
