Cinemagoers who are looking for a deal at the box office but remain skeptical about MoviePass now have another option, Sinemia. While viewings are far more limited, Sinemia does include plans that allow for 3D, 4D, and IMAX showings. Advanced tickets may also be purchased online.

“Not everyone really needs an unlimited moviegoing experience,” Oguz told me. “The average in the U.S. is four movies per year.” For me, at least, Sinemia is a more attractive offer because of one simple feature: advanced online ticketing. MoviePass requires you to be physically at the movie theater to purchase the tickets, and homie just can’t play that.

At least this service is putting a limit on the number of tickets you can get, at 1 ticket per month for $4.99 things can't get too out of control except...
“The average in the U.S. is four movies per year.”
If this is the business model they're aiming for, they might be sorely mistaken, because if I'm going to only go 4 times per year why wouldn't I just buy tickets as I need them? I know if I'm paying $5 a month I'll make it a point to see a movie on a monthly basis even if I don't want to see a particular movie, wonder how much of your cell phone info they track and sell though like MoviePass.

I haven't been to a movie in a long time and nearly shat kittens when I saw the matinee price was $11, but even then if I average that 4 times a year it's $44, versus nearly $60 at $4.99/month

I'm just amazed that enough people still see movies in theaters to warrant services like these.

I haven't gone to a theater in ages. The experience is much better at home. I can pause to take a piss, or make myself a drink, I always get to sit near the center of the screen at an ideal distance, and I don't have to deal with the other assholes crinkling bags, and playing with their phones.

Sure, I have to wait a couple to a few months after the theatrical release for the bluray to come out, but I am fine with that.

Of course, this helps:

Very wide angle lens (Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, at widest setting on Nikon DX sensor) to get everything in view. Screen is larger than it looks (70" if I recall)

I just wonder who the people are who go to the theaters. I mean, there's the people who absolutely cannot control themselves, and don't want to wait a couple of months to see the latest Star Wars, but who else?

Pretty much this. This isn't 30+ years ago where a HT setup would set you back thousands. You can at this point get a fairly decent setup for under a grand. Take a few hours learning how to equalize and color balance your TV right and there just isn't anything offered by a theater to justify their prices.

My new house has a theater room, I'm currently running in-wall cabling for my 7.1 setup and looking to grab a 70+" OLED TV later this year. I really have no desire to go to the theaters anymore. There are so many entertainment options competing for my time, waiting for a BD release is easy. Studios need to adapt.

When will they start including babysitting? I'd pay double if a sitter was included.

Yeah, MoviePass's business model is based around the fact that if you remove the cost barrier to seeing movies, then all that exists is a time commitment. People will find the time to see more movies they otherwise wouldn't have paid to see.

They basically advertise that fact. So Sinema can't be assuming that the "4 per year" is going to hold. It'll be 12 per year for most people on that plan.

I have a 100 inch projection setup with good surround sound speakers and I still go to the theater for new movies.

Quite possibly, some people enjoy going to check out new movies at the theater.
I enjoy it when it's a high quality cinema that offers luxury seating and unique experiences. Those are starting to take off. The standard movie experience sucks though with people on their phones, candy wrappers, etc etc.

I like movies. I like the popcorn, and that you're OUT, doing something. Afterwards, maybe a bite to eat, or an ice cream.

Oh, Zara, love the box of Kleenex. Call me, we'll binge 'Titanic' and 'The Fault in Our Stars.' Oh, and 'Toy Story 2,' when Jessie's song, "When She Loved Me" comes around I always need a Kleenex.

MoviePass recently changed their terms of service to disallow multiple viewings of the same film. Myself and a small group of friends (4 of us) all have movie pass, and go catch a film every Sunday morning. The recent change doesn't impact us much, but we might run into a scenario where theres nothing we want to see, and we'd choose to see Inifinty War again.

I'm trying to remember a recent movie that was worth the theater expense and I'm drawing a blank.
I go because others want to go, and I'm ok with that, but the theaters where I'm at are garbage.

Just saw Avengers today; boring one liners, uninteresting conflict/story (if you can call it that), no real point to the whole thing.

Movies today don't tell stories, they're made to make more movies.

Have Moviepass and Sinemia. Free 2D movies and one free IMAX (our local one is a 90'x65' giant screen) including 3D or Dolby Cinema per month. Love both. Hope both businesses can be sustained and continue as long as possible.

Home theater just don't do it for me anymore since I joined MP last August. Dolby Cinema and really any modern movie theaters puts any home setup to shame. There is just no comparison. The size of your screen is just meh.

The reason you're happy with your setup is because you got comfortable with what you have. If you start going to the theaters to watch movies frequently, you'll notice what you have is just "whatever".

One thing I always do is watch movies 3 to 4 weeks after release. That way my friend(s) and I always get the center seats and pretty much have the whole theater to ourselves. It is a whole 'nother level of experience to watch a movie on a giant screen IMAX sitting in the center in an otherwise empty theater.

Lol, funny.

I live in a house with people with pollen allergies.

My fiance goes nuts about keeping tissues everywhere. There is not a room in this house or any of our three cars that doesn't have a box.

I bet your neighbors hate you with that sound system. lol

I go to the theaters maybe 6x per year, and we ONLY go to the 21+ AMC theaters. No kids, nobody talks, reclining loveseats. We actually just got back from seeing Infinity Wars.

Granted, I'd pay extra to watch it at home, for sure.

I like this. I use Movie pass but not being able to get tickets ahead of time stinks.

The best part of single family homes with New England levels of insulation is that I can crank this to butt vibrating levels and even just outside the house you can barely tell.

Have to do it when the stepson is at his dad's though :p

I still go to theaters because IMAX screen and sound > pretty much every home theater setup.

Oh, your home theater has a 100 inch screen? Cute. That screen over there is 100 feet.

oohh.. the Kleenex is for THOSE kind of movies.. ok.

My last movie experiences, which granted haven't been a lot, the sound aspect has been to set it to LOUD. In some cases painfully loud, and I'm an older guy who has some level of hearing loss so I can imagine for others it's even worse, if I'm going to the movies it's to see something visual appealing and that usually comes with massive kabooms and rumbles and a lot of this is the movie makers fault for not toning down the 'splosion sound levels but I dunno if the "sound" aspect is necessarily a benefit for me. I mean sure if you have the "perfect" seats things are probably a bit more tolerable but just because you're near the edges shouldn't mean that a speaker full of pain should be your viewing experience.

There are definitely some terrible theaters and badly calibrated theaters out there. If you have a good one near you then no home theater setup can come close in my opinion.

i have been to a show where it was a quieter movie.. and you could hear the movie in the next theater.. that was.. fun

Nobody watches porn 'movies' anymore. 'Caligula' was the only movie I can think of that had even the smallest reason to stray into turd herding while maintaining a plotline. And have you ever fallen asleep when the nosecone of your man-missile was packed in tissue? I mean, not that I would know, of course, being as manly as I am, but I've heard things.

MoviePass only let's the grandfathered-in customers see a movie every day. New customers can only see 4 movies a month now instead of 30ish

Actually, unlimited is pretty much in name only now. The updated policy of no repeat watching of the same movie pretty much limits you to what is available currently. So it is actually similar to the 4 movies a month for majority of subscribers. For those that like animes and bollywood movies which increases the available movies per month, they can make much more use of the unlimited but still not up to the max of 30.

Of course, this helps:

Am I the only one around here wondering what your other 3 walls must look like in order to have chosen to place both the FL speaker and 70" TV within ~2' of a fireplace, and also to have the TV stand, TV screen, and FR speaker encroach on your doorway so that neither side is clear? Do you live alone?

Well majority of people can't afford or even know how to have a set up like that. People think they ballers cause they have a cheapo 65" TCL TV that they got on sale on Black Friday.

It's a difficult to deal with open floor plan.

The wide angle of the lens makes it look worse than it is though. The right most speaker does not block the opening to the dining area. The Screen DOES protrude slightly into that area, but only by 2-3 inches. The fireplace is not in active use. Chimney is not maintained. Id' have to have it cleaned and inspected before I ever even considered burning anything in it. I Honestly wish it weren't there. it takes up space, and has hard reflective echo-y surfaces.

It's not ideal, but such is the greater Boston housing market. Every available plot in the greater metro area has been built on for decades, so if you get a house, you are going to be dealing with the most popular floor plan when they were built. My current house is 1920's vintage. It's rare to find anything at all built after the 70's.

It's a 65" and we sit maybe 10-11 feet away from it, so it is not bad. It mostly fills the field of view, but not quite. If that door way weren't there and I had the space, I'd go up to 70" or maybe 75", but above that I think it would start to get too big. Yes, screens in movie theaters are certainly MUCH bigger, but on the 2 or 3 occasions I have gone to movie theaters in the last 5 years, the larger screens haven't impressed me much, and I've actually been disappointed by the sound in the theaters. I find mine at home is much better, and was even on my older more modest surround system.

you haven't experienced a proper imax theatre, I would say IMAX is worth it as a theatre experience the other formats not so much.
I have 65 OLED I sit 6 ft away from at home.

That seems awfully close, but to each their own I guess. I don't like having to keep turning my head (or moving my eyes) to see different parts of the screen. I want the entire picture to be in my FOV oat all times.

I hate that "front row at the theater" experience. I feel like I'm missing whats out of my field of view.

"that allow for 3D, 4D, and IMAX showings."

Coming to a theater near yoooooooo....

TIME VISION

That was what I thought the first time I saw 4D too, but it turns out they are just calling other effects, like haptic seats and spraying water mist as an added dimension.

A bit of a useless marketing stunt, if you ask me.

Floorboards.

On topic, I got in on the Costco $90 for one year MP deal last November or so. Paid for itself already. Kinda sucks not being able to see the same movie more than once, but up to this point I never tried, so whatever.

It would've been nice if the OP had listed the price tiers for Sinemia, and note that they're all BILLED ANNUALLY.

1 movie per month: $5/mo
2 movies per month: $7/mo

2 IMAX/3D movies per month: $10/mo
3 IMAX/3D movies per month: $15/mo

Seems reasonable considering the price of a ticket, but I'd still take MP over this due to release date variability (aside from unlimited being a way better value also).

Maybe I [m]oved them since I took this picture a year ago? Not sure.
I'm sure someone moved it when they stubbed the shit out of their toe while pausing to take a piss, or make themselves a drink, LOL. I'm just teasing, btw, you don't need to justify yourself to me - I'm sure you're careful. I just found it funny that someone mentioned your tissue box but no one seemed to care about the bad comedy movie level of doomsday trip hazard present in your doorway. I mean like not only will the unfortunate protagonist spill his/her beer, they will knock the TV over and spill his/her beer and him/herself directly onto it.

and don't reply telling me that the TV is fake wall mounted to the stand - that stand is falling right the fuck over and exploding Michael Bay style

I really don't see what the problem is. There is a little intrusion into the space, but the TV has been in that location for more than 4 years, anda therethas been a tower speaker inin th location for 3 years, and even with a very active kid rubbing aroibd the house neither have ever been knocked over, even when I wanted through the house in pitch darkness using "the force".

Granted that doorway is not a main passage. It connects the livingroom and the dining room, but people don't walk between the two very often. The dining room is connected to the kitchen, and the kitchen is connected to the front hall, which is out of shot to the left in the main picture, which is the main entrance and exit.

The speaker is very sturdy, but it couldbt fall over if someone full on body slammed it. Short of that it is not being knocked over. The wide feet on the bottom give it a very sturdy stance.

The fake wall mount entertainment stand isn't falling over even if you were to full on body slam it. It would take some intent to tip it over.

Now I agree, aesthetically it isn't the most pleasing, but my better half doesnt mind, and you deal with the house you have, not the one you wish you had. There is simply no other place in the house to put a TV.

Besides, they don't really stick out that much..

Do you have a lot of drunken wrestling matches at your house? :p

So, I went to the local AMC theater today at 4:45pm with my fiance and stepson to see the Incredibles 2.

If I had my druthers, I'd never do it again.

1.) ~$40 for two adult and one kid ticket

2.) ~$35 for concessions. (Two small sodas, one small popcorn, one box of candy, one slushie)

3.) Crying, crinkling, talking, cellphone screens, you name it

4.) It's really tough to say, not being able to compare side by side, but I don't think the sound or video quality was significantly different.

I don't understand how these people are still in business at all. Ought to be illegal to overcharge a captive audience for concessions. Just like it ought to be illegal for rest stations on toll roads to charge any more for gas than other stations in the surrounding area.

It's not that I can't afford it, but it really triggers my "pissed off because I'm getting ripped off" sentiment and makes me never want to go back.

The new Incredibles was fun though. See it if you can, but maybe wait for the bluray.
