The Mainstream Media’s Inevitable Attack on “Addictive” Fortnite Has Begun

I hate this fucking game! My kid absolutely loves it and plays it all the time. We used to play Borderlands, Dead Space 3 and Left 4 Dead all the time together (I built him a PC that sits next to mine) but since he's found Fortnite he's stopped completely.

He wants me to play with him and I do occasionally but usually rage quit within 30 minutes.

I really don't get what is appealing about this game. You drop in.... Start looking around for a gun and supplies... Find some BAM! You were shot once and you're dead. Or worse, you find all kinds of good weapons, get full shield get plenty of health packs then head into battle, walk around a corner and BAM! You were shot once and you're dead and lose everything.

It is the stupidest fucking game I've ever seen. I can't even type out a forum post about it without getting mad lol

Get Gud :D

single mom. what a great parent.

break TV, so buy a more expensive projector to spoil the undisciplined kids some more !!

But is it really the mainstream media or sensationalist tabloids? I know that nowadays the line has blurred a bit between both, but still, aren't The Sun and the Daily Mail tabloids?

I have a daughter that plays it a lot. We control her play time and she minds us. Last time she didn't mind us, I took the PS4 and locked it up for a few days. Haven't had an issue since.
I've already heard all these parents I know freaking out. Relax. It's a game - she plays with friends from school. I can hear the volume and what they say. I've heard the occasional cuss word, but nothing too bad. (My daughter, to my knowledge, has not cursed yet...)
I've played the game - it's fun. I tried it on the PS4 and realized I can't use joysticks. I'm only a keyboard and mouse kind of guy.
That is pretty much how it works with both my kids. Give me attitude when I say it is time to get off and it goes away for a while.

True, and maybe I'm still falling into the pitfall of expecting more mature reactions from children than I should, but the response that having Roblox removed elicits is much stronger than I would expect from just your run of the mill punishment.

I think these games become more than just a pleasant distraction or entertainment for kids, but rather become a complete obsession.

I missed this earlier but no there is definitely a deeper issue if there is screaming and tantrums involved. Sure I get a certain amount of push back from my kids (they are kids and thus think and act like kids), but I don't even remember the last time a screaming fit happened. Tears sure, sometimes..but that happens when you have a 12 year old girl who is starting to get emotional over everything and a 7 year old boy who is..well...7. 90% of the time I tell them to do something the only push back i might get is "Comon dad one more game pleassssseeeeeeee?". Sometimes..I even relent if they have done particularly well recently on chores and such.

Just don't smash your TV and you'll be fine ;-)

Well my kids play fortnite a bit. First it's free to play so this £400 nonsense is silly (though she's on xbox so I appreciate it's a bit different). Because she 'had' to pay for the dancing emote, lol. But she's apparently left her credit card billing info in the kids account so he can spend more... Now I'll give her that these companies tend to suck at putting pin's on purchases, limits, etc and are quick to save your credit card information. But I'm pretty sure Xbox one can have a passkey for purchases. For PC Fornite it didn't give me a choice to not save my payment method... I had to then go into the epic account and delete it afterwards.

Breaking the TV suggests her kids have serious anger issues. Sneaking to play games isn't unusual... But both PC and xbox have time limits, microsoft family safety etc. You can set screen time limits and time of day restrictions. I use those with my kids all the time. You can also grab the power cord every night and keep it in your room, lol.

Also make my kids charge their phones in a common room and not their bedroom so they can't stay up on it at night...

I get she's a single mom and probably didn't know you can do some of these things but I still feel like it's mostly her fault.
