Nikola Motors is suing Tesla over 3 design features on it Tesla Semi for being too similar to it Nikola One design. It is almost if no vehicles before its One had doors, windshields, or an overall semi truck looking appearance. Thanks cageymaru.


Nikola Motors, a Utah-based company working on a battery-hydrogen semi truck and other electric vehicles, filed a lawsuit against Tesla claiming that they copied the design of their truck for the Tesla Semi.

The company is seeking as much as $2 billion from Tesla in what appears to be a clear case of patent trolling.

Those are functional features for drag resistance. I'm not sure they are profound enough or novel enough to be patented, though. But I would say Tesla may have surveyed the competition.

Hmm, which company existed first? If it was Tesla, sue Nikola Motors for using Tesla's first name.

Those two look NOTHING alike, what a damn joke, Not only should this be thrown out, Nikola should be fined for wasting the court's time in filing this bullshit.
 
Mercedes and Man are already building what is more or less those trucks cosmetically.

Noawadays most sedans look pretty much the same and I don't see Mazda suing Kia or Toyota. Those truck do NOT look alike at all.

What about some of those old drawings from the 50's (retrofuturism stuff)? A lot of newer inventions look like those old drawings. Wait until we have flying cars... Jetsons will be ready to sue!

In fairness, I can appreciate the windshield being very similar between the two. If you squint, the overall vehicle shape is similar as well, but as pointed out, it's a function of aerodynamics and it's sorta hard to achieve the results you're after unless you alter the design considerably. (There was that one space-age looking semi a few years back that looked weird as hell, I don't have any clue who made that one though)

However if ANYONE has a claim here it's Audi against Nikola :meh: And now that Nikola is putting themselves in the limelight here, I wouldn't be surprised if Audi makes a stink about it :p

thus the courts say this is a completely LEGIT case to raise for compensation and penalties

(but Tesla & Musk are the darlings of tech journalists. They can do no wrong...)

Holy shit! Cars have four wheels! Some Celtic dude's family is owed a metric fuckton of money because the car has four wheels like the carriage.
 
The location of the court that will hear this determines the outcome of the suit. Not the content or legitimacy of the complaint.
 
If this succeeds then Gene Roddenberry's family should sue cell phone makers for copying the communicators with the flip phones and tablet makers for copying the tablets they used on the Next Generation shows. Maybe Earth should sue the other planets for having "moons" orbiting around them :p
 
It's kind of funny that no one is buying it for the look of the truck, it's just a virtuoso at the numbers game when it comes to bulk road shipping. One could even surmise this suit may never have come to light if they hadn't decided to paint the truck in the machined metal look. I'm willing to also put money down that if a hundred truck companies were to invest serious money into finding the most scientifically aerodynamic truck front, the vast majority would look nearly identical to these.

Nobody buys a Prius on looks in the traditional sense. But cars with the same system that look like normal cars never sold.
