Today is Email Debt Forgiveness Day!

If there’s an email response you’ve wanted to send but been too anxious to send, you can send it on April 30th, without any apologies or explanations for all the time that has lapsed. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been. Just include a link to this explainer, the one you’re reading right now, so that your recipient knows what’s going on. Together, we can all make our inboxes less stressful.

I have a better idea, let's rally around the first annual HardOCP Delete that Jackasses' Email Day. If you have not responded by now, and you are "getting stressed out" over it, just delete the damn thing and don't look back. Maybe even throw in an "Eff You!" under your breath for good measure. Better yet, write that in the email and send it back. Now that is stress relief.

TIL people sit on emails and stress over them. I guess I'm a jackass..If I don't want to respond to an email I just delete it and never think about it again.

hahah, thats what I was thinking. I've been in IT since it was a reclusive geeky escape from reality as a young teen, and grown with it until it's now literally my professional identity and largely part of my social fabric and personal being.

.....and I've never heard of keeping a stressful email around and thinking about it. How do people get anything done when their fragile balance is that easily disturbed? o_O

Personally or professionally?

Personally I could give a flying fuck what you feel about an email and chances are high I wont have the time to respond.

Professionally? Its bad form to not respond to something where you are the only person on the TO line. Anything where I am the only person on the TO line gets a response. Anything I am on the cc line, not so much.

Now I miss emails all the time. Getting a 1k+ a day will do that...but the vast majority of them are informational for me as the lead. But occasionally someone wants me to respond and puts a dozen other people on the TO line and it gets caught up in the filters and shuffled off into the ether...

I dont usually delete e-mails, but I just mark it read and then dont care about it. My personal favorite is when people send me a message and it wants a delivery confirmation... like ya no.

This is easy to avoid. Just have everything filtered to the trash. Clean inbox every morning!

Who comes up with this crap

Can we have an official day of stop coming up with stupid official days of xxxxxx

I dunno. I quit mail servers etc, long ago and just use gmail. Everything there is just water under the bridge. ;)

Just spent the last two hours putting my money where my mouth is. I had not cleaned out my inbox since a year and two weeks ago. I replied to one email that more than two months old and deleted the rest.

I thought 'debt forgiveness' meant you could ask for a 1 time debt clearance...so you could e-mail your credit card or cell provider and request a 1 time waving of payment

Oh shit!!! Did anyone else just delete their whole family with the 1,732 testosterone and erectile dysfunction emails?

I actually make it a point to stresstest gmail servers by literally deleting nothing, ever.... EVER...... eventually google will either say "hmm, this guy isn't deleting OR opening these emails, perhaps we should block them, they are using up valuable storage space and system resources we could be using for other things"

but probably not.....
either way, 20,000 and strong!

Professionally you can send a message on those TO messages you don't respond to. Although the sender will never comprehend that.

Yes boss, you did send me that email and I did get it even though I told you I didn't. I just didn't want to get back to you. But in my defense, you were the dummy that gave me admin privileges to the mail server.

Wait for it

I prefer email bankruptcy every once in a while. Delete all, the important stuff will reappear when needed.
