Asus GL503VM-BI7N13 1060 Laptop $1050 Best Buy

970M to 1060 is a big jump, 3GB isnt so bad if you're just sticking to 1080p gaming or if its like Bethesda games keep the mods at a minimum or normal textures.

tbh though, I would spend an extra $500 to jump to 8th gen. Not really a big fan of the 7700HQ. At least with $500 you get 6 cores, 120Hz and a 6GB card:

Do you recommend the Asus over the MSI?

Absolutely true on the 3GB to 6GB thing. You don't need the extra memory at 1080p on a laptop. However, I would not blow $500 more for 8th gen, 120Hz and 6GB. Most games won't use the extra cores and the processor won't be able to push much over 60Hz depending on the graphics settings.

I would check the rog forums and maybe ping people over there on build quality and also the screen being used. Unfortunately Asus has shown to cut corners on the lower end models and the build quality can suffer (at least according to people in the forums). Best Buy is also known to carry store specific models that dont exist elsewhere (look for letters in the Model that dont appear elsewhere). I ran into this with my first ROG laptop which was probably 10 years ago. The model # was a best buy variant and would not take a Quad core Proc when the retail non Bestbuy model of the same laptop would. Used a different mobo.

I buy a new laptop every couple of years through my work for myself and so far have always gone Asus. This year I almost jumped to another brand because of screen issues on the G701. I ended up jumping on the G703 because of the 144Hz screen, and happy I did. But I've seen a few complaints on build quality of the strix line to make me do research before I ever bought one.

Other then that seems like a good price. Most likely moving it out because 8th gen was just released.

I mean you could configure it to your needs but the 8th gen is definitely worth it over the 7700HQ.

i7 7700HQ 4/8= Quad core, boosts to like 3.8GHz on single core but on all 4 cores you're probably around 3.6-3.7>GHz? maybe and HQ is not unlocked like HK.

i5 8300H 4/8 = Quad core, even this one performs higher than last gen's 7th gen. It boosts at 4.0GHz single core but they upped all 4 cores to run at 3.9GHz.. which is plenty and close to 6700K desktop stock performance.

i7-8750H 6/12 = 6 core, boosts to like 4.1GHz on single core but not bad with 4.0GHz on 4 cores and 3.9GHz on 6 cores. Again performance level around 6700K + 2 more cores for multi-tasking/gaming/streaming/encoding performance.

So for mobile the 7th to 8th gen is a big boost, 6th to 7th not so much aside from core clocks.

That being said 120/144Hz panel is purely preference, its nice to have. Ive had my 17.3"/1070/120Hz laptop for about a year now and its been good to me.

Nvidia laptop GPUs are no slouch nowadays and come close to desktop performance so even with a 1060, if you're playing games like overwatch/fortnite or other fast pace fps games you'll be seeing way over 100fps+.

I’ve reviewed this on my channel.

The panel is the auo42ed same as the Asus Zephyrus. It’s stunning.

The build quality is fantastic and the all black look is very welcome.

The temps are high but it’s .9” thin. Repasting is a 30 min job tops and you’re on your way to better temps.

Best machine in its class at this price.

just got mine today so far way better than my msi 970m laptop the only thing that is bugging me is the back light bleed is terrible. Not sure if its just the gamble and i lost but its pretty bad thinking of returning it and getting another one to see if mine is just bad.

Food for thought:

$1050 MSI Laptop (after $100 rebate)

A few days ago it was on sale for $950 with rebate. I was excited until i saw the sale expired.

It's a gamble. Mine was great and I bought another panel (same panel model) separately to install in another laptop and it too was nearly perfect regarding BLB. You just never know. This particular panel is not notorious for BLB issues.

I also heard that this model even though it's 3 gig has all the Cuda cores unlocked like the 6gb version correct me if I am wrong.

That's one expensive laptop. Work paid for it? Lucky you! When do you recieve yours? June 2018...

Haha I wish. No I pay for every laptop I buy, they just do it up front. 2yr plan that comes out of my check. Its nice not having to come up with it all at once. Surprisingly this laptop went out of stock fairly quickly everywhere. I have a friend who also wanted to buy one and waited, and was left out in the cold right around thanksgiving right after I picked mine up. The new ones being released now are the 8th gen versions of the G703 with the 6 core procs. He is hoping to get one this time.
