Articles saying buy video cards now

I've seen a recent flush of articles online suggesting everyone who has not been buying a video card due to the shortage and massively inflated proces should buy now. Many cards that were previously unavailable or only available for grossly inflated prices are now in stock at almost msrp.

This article;

https://venturebeat.com/2018/04/27/gpu-prices-are-falling-and-you-should-buy-now

For example recommends buying a video card now. The argument is weak though. There is a new generation coming from nvidia this year so why buy now? Also myself and the few friends I have who have been putting off a GPU purchase didn't just save that expendable money for the past six months, we redirected it into other hobbies and let the upgrade bug wither.

So what's the real argument for buying years old tech today at only slightly higher than msrp? If you've been forced to wait six months already why not just wait six more and get the next generation of card?

Also the cheapest vega56 I can find it still going for $700. What a flop that thing has been.

Miners have stopped buying cards and now there is an influx of cards that need to be offloaded, so they pay the tech sites to write these articles so that normal people will purchase the overstock before the new cards come out.

That's what I've been thinking.

Or wait another couple months and pay 2/3's the price!

I'm currently planning to just wait for the next generation from nvidia and then check out my monitor and video card options. The rx480 I got for like $220 last year is fine at 1080p. I can still run every game at max settings. Hell I could probably resell that video card for more than I paid for it a year ago.

I've seen a lot of miners trying to offload a lot of cards lately. They are asking for way too high a price for a used card though. I expect prices to start plummeting as more miners join in the fire sale. I suppose we'll see

Article is poorly researched and basically just a guessing game on author's part.

Blockchain is real tech and is changing how financial institutions are doing business from Ripple to JP Morgan Chase, largest bank in the USA is using Blockchain using Ethereum fork and modification with ZCash for privacy called Quorum.

Do not be too surprised once regulations are more established that the big boys, such as Apple, Amazon.com and others make their own currency or adapt one of the current one's.

Crypto-Currency is on the up swing now (almost very predictable from previous history) at this time of year, slump mid summer and then takes off again late in the year. Mining is more profitable than it was last month and you will always have sellers selling used cards from miners to gamers. Nothing new.

I would suggest in buying a video card if the cost is well worth what you get out of it. Basic need/want/desire on if it is worth it or not. If I wanted a better gaming card and it was worth it - I would buy it - if the cost went 1/2 in 3 months it would not bother me the least since it was already worth the cost when I bought it - I would probably just buy more if that was the case but not the point here. The 1070 Ti looks to be reasonable for a gaming card now - if one is looking for a decent gaming card in the upper end that would be my first choice. Vega's are all over priced right now, for gaming I don't see them as a good buy, for Mining it can be useful.

As long as crypto shit keeps happening and prices are stupid high, I ain't buying shit. If my vid cards die, I'll sell off the rest. Miners and manufacturers can eat my shit as it comes out of my ass! Fuck that article! I hope the utility companies jack up their prices ten-fold for miners.

More cheaper cards for my mining operations ;)

Seems like the miners are starting to try to offload. But they are pricing their used goods way too high. Aint nobody gonna buy a used mining card at $300 when it's going brand new for $325.

And when that guy says he's got five to go, and later ten more. With some baloney story about how this isn't really a mining card, and neither are the next fourteen, just a bit of wee AI work, maybe I played witcher 3, just a little. Come on.

You want $300 for a card I don't even care about? Hell I see them going for $250 on eBay. And they new with full warranty for only $325.

And I don't want them anyway. I mean come on miners. You knew this day would come.

Actually I have a couple 1070's for Xboost and Tensorflow experiments.
I did play Civ 6 and Fortnite after the same models ended up being $0.29 for 10 runs with test data on my AWS acct.
Multi GPU was not fun to configure.
One rig went to my Infosec guy bc ironically we have him working in Kubernetes more than the rest of us.
I am an AWS certified DevOps Engineer, and I work for an APN partner that's deployed vehicle tracking solutions that deliver biz intelligence to sales and consumer packaged goods production data.
We have Marketing/PR projects inflight, just waiting for

....but I'm keeping my 1080ti and there's no way I'm signing off on Tesla purchases since I keep getting our accounts reloaded with credits.

The 1070's ended up as freebies on my equipement allowance I gave to my gf and my buddy's kid.

So there are a few of us, but I doubt there are many.

You could've just said "I use GPU's for actual work purposes."

It just sounds like your flexin' lol

I am waiting for 1080ti to drop to $300! It is still a good upgrade from my 1080 and don't see the normal 2080 being much faster then a 1080ti. 2080ti won't be out til next year I bet.

Closet writers on the net sure the 1070ti is in stock because of chip supply but that card never really got off the ground when it was released.

It's was 3am. My gf wants a hackintosh. I'm trying to tell her it's all the same once she is in Adobe CC. Nvidia cards are better. I swear she is going to drive me to go buy an AMD card, load up MacOS, then tell me I was right and revert it all back to how it was yesterday.

Also I'll have to dive into the miner sewer deeper bc I've already called enough dudes on their story.

I just want them to bench the thing, or I'll do it. It's not like any of the AMD cards are going to blow a 1070 away in a Premiere workflow that's CUDA accelerated.

Probably going to be a while, 980ti was just getting there before the craziness.

lol just wait until you're married ...

Venturebeat is not a reliable source of tech information in my view. These types of questions are better answered here or at other reliable tech sites. Pcper.com is another good resource.

Nobody knows what will happen with gpu prices going forward. Crypto mining has changed the way prices trend over time and so accurate predictions are difficult.

Recommendations: short term, pre-built systems and gaming laptops are better value. Long term, expect trends to return to normal (tech is supposed to get cheaper over time). Also, as others have said in this forum, used mining cards being dumped on ebay currently are still priced too high.
