I have a very old C2D MBP that I would like to repurpose. Years and years of software shenanigans has resulted in so many software based issues.

I'd like to start fresh install with it but I no longer have any disks. I have another MBP that I can use.

The battery gave up the ghost last night (bulged), so the only thing I can do is make it a light duty server. Unless a cheap battery option exists.

I bought my battery for a 2010 mbp (13") on amazon. Was $50 or less with prime shipping and it's been going strong for ~3 years now.

You can get a HUGE performance boost by replacing the hdd with a cheap 2.5" ssd (since you'll have torn it open and all.)

I tried to Google exactly where Travolta bought the battery, couldn’t find it.

However I learned something about you today, and I didn’t have to use Google.

I to learn something without using google. You don't really know how to use a computer. :-P

If it is running 10.6 or after you shouldn't need any disks and just can use the built in restore feature.

Yes that’s true. I upgraded to an SSD over 2 years ago. It’s a C2D, the battery bulged, it’s on it’s way out. I think I’m going to keep the SSD for external storage for my new computer (I got 256 gigs, and the SSD is 512).

Do you remember the seller of the battery? Looking for a reputable seller since there are counterfeits galore with older Apple products. Yea, I’m looking for a forum member recommendation, not just a Google search link. I thought that was obvious, but I suppose not. :-P

I will do that.

The seller I bought from (some onehunglo brand) is long gone. I'm not sure you can even get a "legit" battery for a 2010, but for the price it really shouldn't matter that much if it dies after a year or two. If it DOES matter, sell it on ebay without the ssd - people seem to love old macs, I'd be shocked if you couldn't get someone to bite for at least $200 BIN (obviously do your own research, $200 could be way off for a working mbp sans battery).

I have a Mini that I’m using for the light server function. I was going to replace that with this MBP.

Nope! Same specs. I’ll restore it and sell it.

Been able to install OS X from a thumb drive for a long while now, just need to run a Terminal command with the App Store download or use one of the various utilities (Google it). Last 3 or 4 releases can do a direct download for installation.

Downloads are via the Apple Store for official installers.
