James Cameron Hopes for “Avengers” Fatigue

So he is saying "Don't watch Marvel's badly acted fx stuffed unoriginal tripe and watch my badly acted fx stuffed unoriginal tripe"... got it

they've built up and hyped Thanos as the baddest mofo in the history of comic book movies...how many MCU movies has this buildup of Thanos been going on for?...12?...all these infinity stones etc...he needs to kick some major ass and not end up as another typical MCU villain who gets dispatched with relative ease...I can already see how this is going to end with Thanos- all the heroes gather together and each one of them uses their particular super-power sctick to get their shot on him and combined together they take him down- Spidey shoots his web at him, Thor throws his hammer, Cap throws his shield, Hawkeye hits him with an arrow, Black Panther scratches him with his claws etc...and bada bing their combined strength kills him...

I would honestly be surprised (and disappointed) if that is the case...and I suspect I'll be far from the only one. I suppose it's possible, but it would definitely be the beginning of the end for the MCU.

unless you are just tired of comic book movies.
More like "unless you've put all potential comic book movies into a single category in order to dismiss them." Logan alone is proof enough that movies based on comic books have more potential than just people in costumes fighting ultimate evils. Hell, the people who enjoyed the Blade series barely knew that Blade was a comic book character. Does Fantastic Four versus Galactus really resemble Spider-Man versus Vulture so much that one could be tired of both for the same reason?

stop trying to make a single Genre.. well everything - because it's not close.

I hope the stupid action hero movies die off soon too. I'll admit, I watched a bunch of them recently. And I did enjoy a number of them for what they were. But you go from pretty decent (Captain American films) to crap (Dr. Strange). How each entry gets reviews of 80-90% puzzles me. Far too many of them coming out, and too many of them are just gibberish and crap.

There's a reason why the Marvel comic book movies are so popular. They are fun and enjoyable popcorn flicks and you don't need to know jack shit about the comics to enjoy them. They also have very good casting in general with fun characters who aren't photocopies of each other. The individual movies of the different main characters also have their own feel so you don't feel like you're re-watching a movie already done. Even better is that the movies, plots and characters intertwine to tell an additional story. A lot of people enjoy this and I'm one of them.

I don't think every movie or character is great. I have yet to see Black Panther and it's not on my list to watch anytime soon simply because I thought the main character was a hypocritical ass in Captain America: Civil War. On the other hand, the first Captain America movie is one of my favorites even though many people didn't care for that one much. Guardians of the Galaxy is another of my favorites just because it had a very different feel to it from any of the other movies.

Marvel did something relatively amazing starting with the release of Iron Man. They took comic book characters and made them accessible for just about anyone to enjoy the movies. You didn't need to know a damn thing about the characters or comic books and they continued with that formula throughout a lot of movies and characters leading to where we are now. That has been the secret to the success.

As for James Cameron, I don't give a damn. I still haven't seen Avatar and have no intention of doing so. I also have no intention of seeing any sequels. It's very telling that he's bitching about Marvel movies' continued success. If he had any real confidence in his planned sequels he wouldn't be worried about anything else. It sounds like he figures they can't stand on their own and need what amounts to drought of good movies for his to have any real success.

.

Youtube "Honest Trailers" for Dr. Strange. The plot mechanisms and the scenes are practically a near copy of Iron Man. I knew it seemed familiar (but more dull than anything) but that video did an excellent job showing how much of a retread it is. I'll just link to it for the lazy:

I got Marvel fatigue long ago. I went and saw Black Panther because it seemed different, but before that I think the last one I actually paid to see in theater was Iron Man 2 or 3? Not sure.

Hyper-gonadal males? But they have really big hands:

The other reason IMHO ( ;)) is that a comic book is an already produced story board. How easy is that to translate to the screen?

Normal action movie: read script: see if you like it: if you like it, pay story board artist: create story board, edit and start filming.

MCU movie: buy comic book: see if you like it: if you like it, photocopy and magnify comic book pages, edit and start filming. The comic book pages "are" storyboards. Better than some storyboards since the script is included.

Ok, a little facetious. But must be something that the money folks at marvel thought about when they started filming movies. Just not the major push to make a film.

ever since Titanic Cameron lost his way...winning all those Oscars seemed to change him and validate him...he used to love pushing the envelope in terms of technology but after he made all that $$ from Titanic he changed...he does have a legit interest in deep sea diving which he will use in his Avatar sequels...but I miss the old Cameron who was set to direct Battle Angel and more movies which pushed the envelope in terms of CGI...now he's going to waste the rest of his career making Avatar movies (hopefully the sequels turn out to be amazing and the first one was just an extended tech demo)

Sorry it's our generations time to dominate. Comics played a big role in our childhood.
Come back in 10 years for video game movies....that may not suck.

And we're already sick of you at your very first sequel, no matter where the fuck it is right now, what is it now? 10 spider man origins? Sorry but your generational domination is nothing but an autistic telling of some sort of ground hog day-esque constant predictable same-same with no ability to expand the universe of what the previous 2+ generations before you invented.

Yeah, it is very similar to Iron Man. It is an unfortunate case of them adapting a character that is essentially the magical version of Tony Stark. They're kind of stuck going with the Iron Man structure. Pity the movie utterly wates the talents of Mads Mikkleson though. For some reason Disney really loves wasting that man's talent (see: Rogue One).

That's more than a little facetious. Of course they need to make brand new story boards. The only comic book movie where that really applies to is Watchmen. Snyder lifted tons of scenes and lines straight from the graphic novels. Aside from dumbing some nuance down and changing the ending Snyder basically lifted the plot wholesale. None of the MCU movies do that. They take elements from several stories and weave them into something unique to the MCU. Thor: Ragnarok, for example, borrowed heavily from the outstanding Planet Hulk series of comics along with Thor's Ragnarok story from the comics and some other elements. At the same time Hela and her retcon are unique to the movie. In the comics, Hela is allegedly (never confirmed as far as I can tell) Loki's daughter and Odin named her ruler of the spirits of the dead. She doesn't do spike/sword/blade/whatever summoning and throwing thing she did in the movie either. Most of the time the comic stories serve a basic outline. Infinity War is going to be VASTLY different than any Thanos comic story. Some outlines are the same, but just by virtue of the characters and worlds involved it is radically different. Unless the Russos are completely insane I don't see IW delving into the Marvel Cosmic entities of creation and all that jazz that tend to play a big part in major Thanos comic stories.

"Stop liking what I don't like!"

2, technically. Homecoming, thankfully, skipped over the whole origin bullshit. The entire Spider-man situation is all Sony's ineptitude and utter stupidity though.

Happened on the NYC tram, just like the comic.

Other examples also. Not going to try to point out everyone since you know that there was about 100 episodes (issues) between Spidermans Origin and the ride on top of the tram where spidey saved the day.

An exaggeration that points out that some of the visualization is already done so the artists have less to do. Expand on what is already there a lot of times.

Its a fun idea though. I like giving credit where credit is due. Story board/Comic strip............meh

I agree. These comic book movies are getting out of hand.

The genre was due for a rest, IMO, years ago. They're mostly just formulaic circle-jerk drivel made for 12 year-old neck beards in training and kidults with analytics-driven nods to the "international market". Insert half-hashed internal conflict here, should they/shouldn't they subplot now, tired joke there, slow-mo battle charge... It's just embarassing.

The last one I saw that had any merit was Logan and half of the good in that was there was (hopefully) finality.

Not that Cameron has any ground to talk... But at least it's not a super hero movie.

I haven't found any interest in any of the Marvel movies. Comic books were cool as a pre-teen. I did watch Logan though but that had nothing to do with it being a Marvel character.

Really, the superhero bending rules of physics and the evil military industrial invader thing is old. We need more pure science as the conflict. Man against science as the antagonist. Particularly space as the difficulty of managing effects of a weightless vacuum are our major hurdles. Good primer for the next generation. Stuff like "Gravity" or the show "The Expanse".
2007's "Sunshine" almost fit into that category, until it inexplicably turned into a slasher flick in the last half.

You're off your lithium meds again.

In other news, a director is butthurt at the idea of another overblown movie franchise being more popular than his overblown movie franchise he hasn't done anything with in damn near 10 years and no one cared about a month after it was out of theaters.

Now I'm in California, I recall avatards ending up on the evening news complaining that Avatar leaving theaters was a travesty as they considered it a documentary of their people. I wish I were joking. Yeah sure fine his movie made an assload of money, but that doesn't mean it'll be the long lasting IP he hopes it'll be.

News REALLY loved to focus on sobbing ass-clowns who needed 'counseling' for their depressions due to the real world not being up to Avatar standards.... just wanted to toss all of them into a meat grinder & make some snively sausage... I guess that makes me a Villain?

Im with James, gotten pretty bored of back to back to back to back superhero movies.

So long as they keep raking in the dough, comic book movies aren't going anywhere.

I don't see Marvel fatigue anywhere. Every movie is a cash cow, because you, your kids, and grandkids, all like to watch this shit.
mindless entertainment is the best.

That is the word; mindless.
A couple years ago I did something I've never done before. I walked out of a movie. I've sat through some bad movies but I always sat through them because I hoped for some redeeming to happen and it never did. Star Wars Rogue One, or more commonly known as Star Wars: Girls gone wild, I walked out on. I've not seen any of the rest since. RIP Star Wars. It was a good run.

Thing is, both Logan and Deadpool are movies based on Marvel's X-Men IP that were made despite of Marvel/Disney, not because of.

Fox has the X-Men license, which gave them Deadpool and Wolverine, and the terms of the license means that Marvel/Disney really have very little say over what happens in them, other than making sure they don't use other Marvel properties they didn't pay for. That gave them a lot of freedom, used to good effect in the two movies you cited (and not so much in the others, agreed).

Of course that all goes tits-up, now that Fox has sold to Disney.

Personally, I think it's going to be a pretty terrible cinematic world when Disney controls about 50% of the world-wide box-office. That's the cinematic universe I'm worried about.
They already control 50% of the world anyway? Why not let them control more? /s
They control way to much as it is....They own the entertainment industry as we know it. ABC and ESPN which are two of the biggest pieces.....pffff they probably ARE the Illuminati.... lol

I doubt that "good movie fatigue" exists. If the Marvel films start sucking they might have a problem recouping their investment. Otherwise I'm doubtful they'll just stop pulling in viewers.

It's a genre that has a core fanbase. It'll persist.

Even as a geek who once owned tens of thousands of comics(sold decades ago) I've even reached a fatigue level but I reached it with his movies after Aliens/T2. Avatar was interesting eye candy from a tech point but that's as much as I'd give it. As far as current comic video related things, I don't even try to watch CW'verse. Haven't bought an animated direct to disc in nearly ten years and usually don't buy the live actions until they drop in price and only after I've read extensive comments about them on many sites.

For anyone complaining about death in comics or comic movies I strongly recommend watch the hilarious clip below.

they aren't even movies anymore just a 2 hour special effect. not just DC/Marvel movies but a lot of them.

But so are rehashes and endless sequels. There are tons of SciFi Books that have never been tapped for their great stories and characters. Ringworld, A Mote in Gods Eye, Rendezvous with Rama...and a bazillion more. Also after Game of Thrones I could see the possibility of doing some mini series like Anne McCaffrey's Dragon Riders of Pern books.

Is there a mega-like button on this forum? What I wouldn't give for a true to story film adaptation of some serious SF. Alas we will never see such things because the general public is too easily bored unless thing are being smashed every 5 minutes or there are major battles throughout the entire movie. Maybe (since the lead character is a strong female) we might get Honor Harrington? But since the space battles are realistic and not "my missiles cross interstellar distances like we're two jet fighters dogfighting less than 5 kilometers apart" or "my energy weapons instantly hit your ship 10 light minutes away", I guess not.

Being as the source material has been running for DECADES, and readers havent tired of them, I doubt we are going to see an end to these movies any time soon. Unlike some films, the stories and characters have depth, and audiences will return, time and again, to see their favorites' stories continue. I find it deeply amusing that Cameron is wishing for an end to the popularity of one franchise while actively promoting his own! I think people will have "Avatar fatigue" LONG before they have "Avengers fatigue"!

Have you seen "The Expanse"? If not, the first 2 seasons are streaming on Amazon, and you can buy the 3rd season on all major streaming platforms. HIGHLY recommended!

It's not that his new movie(s) are amazing and revolutionary, it's that the studio won't give him the budget because they are spending in on superhero movies and he's butt hurt over it.
