Independent photo-sharing website and image-hosting service SmugMug is the proud new owner of Flickr. According to CEO Don MacAskill, the website had been long neglected by its previous proprietor, Yahoo, and his goal is to revitalize its community of amateur and professional photographers.

The surprise deal ends months of uncertainty for Flickr, whose fate had been up in the air since last year when Yahoo was bought by Verizon for $4.5 billion and joined with AOL in Verizon’s Oath subsidiary. Oath has started to weed out some of its assets after merging AOL and Yahoo. Earlier this month, Oath sold Polyvore, the e-commerce company it acquired under Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer.

Smugmug still exists? Haven't heard that name in years. I think they're the ones in need of revitalization.

They've always made a profit and are family owned . They've purchased a lot of dying services over the years and keep trucking along well it seems.

Couldn't possibly be worse than Yahoo's auth scheme, so hopefully they don't fuck anything up.

The one thing keeping me from deleting my Yahoo! account (forced on me by my ISP outsourcing its email service) was that Flickr insisted on it for authentication. Especially relevant now that Oath's new TOS demand the right to plunder my personal information.

Hoping they don't force a paid plan on everyone. I like Flickr and use it but wouldn't pay for what it is. If they do, I'll most likely head over to Zenfolio unless SmugMug has gotten better in recent years.
