im looking at buying a cheap processor for gaming (probably $100ish) and spend about 120ish on a motherboard. Ill upgrade the cpu later on as funds become available. Is it better to go with a z370 board or a x470 board? Thanks

cpu upgrade later and price to performance screams AMD and their vulnerable AM4 socket they have been using for years. Start HERE for a motherboard, HERE for CPU and just line up your prices.

as suggested AMD if you want socket/mobo longevity. I believe they commited to AM4 thru Zen 2 (thats not the just released Ryzen 2xxx but the next gen) whereas team blue will certainly change sockets at some point here in the near future.

I built a friends PC on a AB350 ITX board with this in mind as he didnt want anything bleeding edge but wanted to have options when he got more into content creation.

Intel tends to change consumer motherboard socket with every CPU generation.
AMD has promised to keep AM4 socket in use through 2020. (it came out in 2017).

HUGE win for AMD for someone in your scenario.

If you go with Intel consider an older model like the X79 or X99 - these lines allow for the use of XEON chips off ebay which were retired from server hardware which allow for more cores (and as such) greater longevity.

Definitely AMD right now if you're looking for component longevity. AM4 socket will sever you for a few more years of upgrades. Given that you are using this for gaming, an upgrade in 2020 on the same socket will probably see you through 2024 before a new components start to look necessary.

Thanks for all the replies. I did decide to go AMD. I bought a used ryzen 1300x off the forum. Im trying to buy an x470 board but they seemed to have sold out very quickly

I didnt know this, Thanks for the info. I am in the middle of deciding for a rig and this helps alot.

Right now is a grat time to buy used Ryzen parts as the new Ryzen 2 just launched. You an get a very powerful Ryzen 1600 and a B350 motherboard in the $220ish range if you look hard enough.
