Wired Hates Far Cry 5 - No One Cares

IMHO multiplayer has ruined games, but that is a rant for another time.

I would probably argue that greed ruins games. Multiplayer certainly doesnt ruin star craft, counterstrike, mario kart etc etc. I think its the half-assed part of the game that isn't the focus getting added in is what can make a game have a sour taste.

Multiplayer absolutely ruined Star Craft, Star Craft original came out during the evolution of the PC RTS, it was a genre defining master piece. Star Craft 2 has succumbed to the core issue of multiplayer gaming, that creativity and game play need to take a back seat to balance and stability.

I cannot comment on counterstrike, and mario kart is completely different. I'd say counterstrike benefits from its age much like the original star craft.

Mario Kart is a couch game with deep multiplayer roots, not the same as the balance driven, lackluster, borderline MMO games of today.

As for being half-assed, it is not that, its that multiplayer games have to abandon the things that make games cool/wow in favor of balance and stability, look at Destiny, a game built ground up for multiplayer, and its terrible.

Yes there are a few standout multiplayer games, but for the large part they all kinda suck.

Hear hear! This is so true.

Not many of us from the "golden age" of PC Gaming (90's - early oughts) are still around and playing games to see what they've devolved into. I tend to believe that most of us that are still around share the same opinion.

Broadband internet access ruined gaming.

Good single player games are still made, it's just a smaller percentage of the total games out there.

The Fallout series still produce good games.

Heck, I enjoyed the hell out of Deus Ex HR and MD, and think they are both probably better than the early 2000's original. I'm currently playing through the NOLF series, and yes, while good, the story and AI doesn't feel as well developed as some newer titles.

I think part of the fond appreciation of games from the late 90's and early oughts is based on rose colored glasses.

I certainly have great memories of playing them, but I have recently gone back and re-played though the original Half Life, original Deus Ex, and now NOLF, and while good and I still have fond memories of them, I didn't feel they were up to par with some newer single player story driven games.

I don't think so. I think that during the period you mentioned multiplayer just started and it was better too.

Gaming died when it went to consoles primary.

I can't see how anyone who knows what Far Cry is would expect FC5 to have some grand social or political statement. It's just a fun dumb shooty sandboxy thing. There are plenty of real things to be outraged about and this isn't one of them by a long shot.

I'm trying to grind myself to the end now.

Everytime there is a cut scene I'm cutting the person off, it's just interminable waffle.

If single player is your gig, then ya... however very early Warcraft, Age of Empires, CoD2, FEAR, Forsaken, Unreal, and many more 90's/early 00's had very fun Multiplayer and LAN modes - We used to have LAN Parties couple times month with friends and family...

a game that advertised itself with charged imagery of patriotism and white supremacy run amok

I'm glad I've been playing a different version of FC5 to them, because the one I've been playing is about a religious cult (and an ethnically diverse one), not white supremacy, and not about patriotism unless you choose to extrapolate the survivalist themes. Some people really do go out of their way to find things to be outraged about these days.

Litfod... don't put words in my mouth bud - I never posted this comment, you did some creative cut and paste work.
