Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is coming to PC

I'm still on the fence about this one - someone tell me their thoughts on the overall story/plot of this game. Is it good? Is it extremely childish? I play RPG's for a mix of good storytelling and challenging yet rewarding combat. From what most people are saying about the combat in this game, it seems pretty easy and not too complex maybe minus the kingdom building stuff. What about the story though? I just want to know if the game is worth full price or wait until it drops about 50%. Thanks guys. I'm actually considering going back and getting Dragon Quest Heroes 2 instead as I've heard it was a pretty solid build on the original Heroes foundation (which I didn't love) - both games are clocking in around $50 as the best prices I can find them for.

Combat isn't very deep. You can get away just by smashing one button if you wanted to and make it through the required fights. If your looking for challenge, there isn't much here. The draw here is variety. You have normal combat/quests/treasure hunting, a bit of crafting (armor, weapons, spells, higglidies), you have the tactical siege combat (which is also not difficult), and you have the kingdom-building aspect of the game. The game is open ended enough and paced well to allow you to pretty much focus on whichever aspect you enjoy the most, without overly pushing the ones you don't like down your throat.

The story. It's not a bad story. If I had to sum it up in a word, it would be "Optimistic". It plays out like a Ghibli Studio G-rated cartoon - not that that is necessarily a bad thing. It has some complexity and nuance to it, but it's told from the viewpoint of a very naive and inexperienced child king. This is right in line with basically everything put out by Ghibli - that's about the best way I can describe the type of story. If that's worth full price or not, well, go check out a Ghibli flic and that should answer your question.

This is the closest thing in some ways to a successor to Suikoden 1 and 2 for me as well. Overall, I just really like it and stand by my earlier comments. I think it's something special and I welcome a lot more where this came from.

See you get me with that one because I LOVED Suikoden, but a lot about this game makes me feel like I won't enjoy how childish it seems.

It's "childish" in the way of a Ghibil film. Very upbeat and optimistic, but not without some serious themes and moments.

Agreed.

I have a pretty robust gag reflex on me but this has been pretty balanced if you know what to expect so no gagging. ;)

A few points: The game has sold roughly 70,000 units according to Steam if I read all that right.

I feel like it could be/could have been more with a few adjustments:

Change the name to something like "Another Kingdom" which is essentially what the English translation of the name is. (Don't read into that the wrong way) I'm still talking about for the sake of ease of marketing.

Regardless of that stray, loose idea and much more importantly there needs to actually be SOME kind of marketing and arguably a little bit of a price reduction. I don't regret paying for it myself at all but $20 off thereabouts across the boards would help this along.

I just want this to succeed as much as it can because it deserves it. :)

Alright, you got me. I'm gonna bite on it.

This is pretty much what is making me wait until it's at least $30.

This dude is making me want to go buy it asap....

This is a pretty fair round up of things. Does that guy look or sound like some sissy to you? You know you want it. ;)
Well, yes he does kinda look like a sissy, LOL.

But I think I'm going to bite..............

Ok, so I pretty much wanted to get into JRPG's this year besides the blockbusters, like Final Fantasy, and I came across Tales of Berseria. I ended up buying it since it was only $18. Boy, I tried so hard to get through the first hour of the game, but I couldn't. It was way too cheesy for me.

With that said, I'm about 30min into NNK2 so far and I'm 10x more invested into this than I was Tales of Berseria. I hope it keeps my interest, because I'm enjoying the shit out of the little I've played so far. It does seem G rated but no where NEAR as cheesy as TofB.

I will say thing about ToB: The cheese dials down after the opening section. Its still has cheeseyness to it, but nowhere near as much as what is in the opening part. As soon as shit hits the fan things go down.

roll with the cheese, its good.

I do like me some cheese....

Maybe I'll try it out again later down the road.

I finished up with everything last night and I'll say it: For me this game is a classic and I can't wait for the expansions. If they wanted to they have a franchise potential here as far as I'm concerned.

It's pretty awesome, and thats coming from someone who hates everything.

Glad to see this continuing to be well regarded - it is on my backlog for purchase soon.

Oh, please note that Kaldaien https://github.com/Kaldaien , developer of a ton of mods to fix graphics, framerates, and add other features, has a project for NiNoKuni 2 as well. Don't forget to look on his GitLab as well!

The reason I haven't picked it up yet, is that I want to see if they will bring the first one over. I didn't have the means to play it (can't remember which platform(s) it was on, but didn't have it at the time). Normally I'll play a series in any order, unless it's heavily story based, and might have some continuity (which I just guessed would be the case here, but don't know for sure (not having read much on it.)) I don't really like missing parts of series due to platform choices. I've been pretty lucky with most series that I enjoy but some not so much. I really should research it a bit more. I'm a big fan of Ghibli movies as it is.

Edit: Just looked, and it was the PS3. I guess I could grab a disc and emulate at some point. That might do the trick. I also noticed the DS listed? I didn't realize it was on that. I have several DSes just laying around. :D

Anyway, might give these a try sooner than I thought now.

I've been told that the original NNK was exceptional and worth playing, especially for fans of Studio Ghibli, given they were involved in its production directly. I would see if you could emulate it for PS3 the - https://rpcs3.net/ - emulator is coming along very well. Unfortunately, it is marked as "Ingame" on the compatibility list, meaning there are likely still glitches that stop it being played start to finish smoothly, but it should come in time.

For what its worth though, if I am correct NNK2 is NOT a story continuity of the first game. It is a completely separate tale so feel free to pick it up first if you wish.

In comparison, the gameplay of NNK2 is vastly superior to NNK. However, I loved the first for it's story, which had plenty of cutscenes and voice acting. NNK2 really lacks in that department compared to the first.

Ni No Kuni DS was never released outside of Japan

That's too bad, but thanks for letting me know, so I don't go trying to hunt it down. I suppose I could just have my brother over to translate. He speaks every dialect of Japanese (and several other languages) fluently. :D Hey! Read this to me! :p

That's good to know. I'll find a copy for future emulation, and just play the new one then. I really don't mind jumping around, (even in some games with continuity) it just seemed like with a JRPG that might not be the best way to play. Sounds like it will be just fine.

God damn it. I wish they would make a new suikoden game. Fuck you Konami. Sell all you IPs already. Stop horading them for pachinko machines. I have to go replay them now.

You weren't joking. It's like a different game, lol

I bought this on release for PS4, and honestly haven't put a lot of time into it beyond getting the kingdom management and most of the buildings up. The whole "hurry up and wait" mechanic of waiting for kingdom money sort of turned me off to it a bit, and then I got caught up with Monster Hunter and God of War and haven't touched it since.
