Pay to Opt-Out of Data Sharing Says Facebook

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg is still out there telling everyone that Facebook doesn't sell user information, because they just share it with advertisers. However, when the question came up about not sharing data the COO stated Facebook depends on that data as part of the business model and to opt-out would cost the user a subscription fee. For once someone at Facebook is shooting straight and this is the first time I'm aware of any conversation that mentions opting out of data sharing. I can't help but wonder if this is a trial balloon to see if this is something that might save their bacon.

As Sandberg told Today: “Our service depends on your data, [so] we don’t have an opt-out at the highest level. That would be a paid product.”

Or, OR... don't use Facebook. You can opt out and pay nothing.

Yeah, because they'd totally live up to their end of that bargain.

At least, right up until they had an "accident" with all the data they were collecting and totally not sharing.

How about people just skip social media?

I never opt-in'd. :) Facebook can suck it!

Do you have friends and family that use Facebook though? They have algorithms that create like shadow profiles for people that don't use their service based off of the activity of people that are close to them, so I am sure Facebook knows quite a bit about you, and they are still making money off of you somehow.

If I pay to opt out do they recover my info from all the folks they sold it to?

Why would they do that? Why would you expect that... You used their service for free during that period. Or you are saying you would retroactively pay?

I they offer an opt-out service, common sense would tell you it would be for any data pulls/scrapes after said service purchase.

I agree with Montu, its great someone is being honest and upfront about the reality of their service/product.

I will say it again... If it is FREE, YOU are the product.

I have a Facebook account and will probably never get rid of it just because it is the best way to keep in touch with certain friends/family.

I am only on Facebook itself maybe once every other month, but use Facebook messenger quite a lot.

Reminds me of one of those Adam Ruins Everything videos.

So is not selling, "only sharing" like a cell phone or ISP saying unlimited is unlimited until you reach a cap......

How would they "recover" it? It's not like it's an item they can just go and take back, and obviously telling people to delete it wouldn't work, plus there's the concern of the fact that if you used the service for free why would you feel entitled to a retroactive redaction of your data without paying for that?

There's also something else in this thread people are forgetting, you don't need a facebook account for facebook to have your data. Those family members of yours that have facebook? You can bet your ass FB knows who you are based off of the call/txt history from their phones, in addition to any mentions of you between those family members in conversation on facebook and of course their own facial recognition for any pictures that include you that were uploaded by your friends and family who use facebook.

There is no program that can go out and erase parts of your life everywhere? lol.

You bring up a good point. Yup, 6 degrees of separation. Our data is out there regardless. And I wouldn't be surprised if facebook uses this thought process to still sell your data 'indirectly'. Like they wont sell from your account, but your sibling and everything they can see is fair game?

Agreed. Staying away from so called "social media" is no guarantee of anything. For that matter, there are 89 robots on the [H] forums at this very moment. Wonder what they are up to?

I wasn't going quite that far with my post, but yeah that's an interesting issue for sure. Even if you paid to opt out of your data being "shared", if FB can claim the data they're sharing about you is really data about your friends/family who haven't paid to opt out, it still doesn't do you any good.

Never been on Facebook, but thanks to Equifax a lot of really important information is out there -- their model is great, you are the product and have to pay to do anything (at least until their huge f-up).

Hard to say. Only one member of the fam uses it. No friends. They actually probably don't have that much on me. These days though, it's about the best I can hope for.

Facebook has an identity profile for you even if you never created an account. There were plans to tie in your medical records to "improve patient care" until this recent scenario. There is no opt-out and Facebook will take one for the team, then business as usual.

Edit: They even keep videos you decided not to send, but are happy to delete messages Zuckerberg sent via retention period. It's a two tiered system folks. This is the same guy who called student colleagues dumb f---'s for trusting him with their data.

Wait wait wait, facebook didn't say this in it's TOS. So, they expect people to trust them and pay them, when they went behind everyone's back and sold their info?

Everyone off the sinking ship.

Wait, so they don't sell the data, they just share it, but they need to be able to share it because that's what their business model relies on... so, what she's saying is, they don't sell it, they give it away for free, and then companies just give them money back for free, so that there's no selling of data going on?

What's next, Microsoft getting caught too and finally having to admit that the 2600+ datapoints being siphoned at the Basic setting in windows 10 is more than "just bug reports"?

pay us for your privacy?

well at least facebook found some way to finally monetize it's platform.

well besides selling your data that is.

There was never any "hack" of data. There was never any "malicious player". This is Facebook's revenue model. The mine you. They mine your family. They sell everything to anyone.
Cambridge Analytica? Hah, ha. Sure, they BOUGHT the data. Just like Facebook wanted them to. Hillary? Not only did she buy data, Facebook PUMPED it to the Hillary campaign. Obama? His election squad dug deeper, further, and wider than anyone, before or after. And Facebook looked upon it....and liked it.

Facebook would fuck their mother for a buck.

Google and Twitter are just as corrupt and evil.

No user should ever have to "opt out" for any personal information.

I think a class-action lawsuit or three is totally acceptable.

Burn them down. I'll watch the flames and I'll laugh.

How many of us are paying for a VPN for that exact reason. A tab bit apples to oranges, but just saying...

Thanks, man, you just ruined my life. :p

What's the big deal?
your data isn't valuable anyway.
Everyone uses fake info , right?

you like puppies? here's a dog food ad.

I find any family and friends that can only be kept in touch with via Facebook, are not family and friends I want anything to do with...besides my own life is boring enough--I don't want a minute by minute account of theirs or know what brand of fake whipped cream they use in bed.

I read an article somewhere where they did the math and estimated each users value at $20/yr.

So would you pay $1.66/mo to not have your data sold/shared and for an ad free experience?

If you *don't* think Microsoft has been selling your data since 1998, I have a nice island in the China Sea for ya, cheap...
