In the latest news from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Mark Zuckerberg will testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on April 11 the committee announced on their website today. The announcement comes after lawmakers formally asked Zuckerberg to testify on March 23rd. E&C Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) and Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) stated:

“This hearing will be an important opportunity to shed light on critical consumer data privacy issues and help all Americans better understand what happens to their personal information online. We appreciate Mr. Zuckerberg’s willingness to testify before the committee, and we look forward to him answering our questions on April 11th.”

Hopefully we will get some answers. Facebook has also updated its Terms of Service today, when it comes to data collection, in the hopes to make things clearer. To me it's already pretty clear, they're going to take all the data they can and do everything with it they want.

The hypocrisy in this entire endeavor is amazing and frankly, nothing will be done. Nothing has been done to anyone for their egregious clear violations of privacy and the law. Not just Zuckerberg, but many others in positions of power and government. We do truly live in a two-tier justice system. The rest of all of this is nothing more than Kabuki Theater.

He'll sit there and shrug and deflect and distort things like anyone who goes to Washington does.

When its over, he'll go back to being a wealthy asshole, and Facebook will continue business as usual.

Yep.
But.. sorry wasn't this Cambridge Analitica stuff just a job well done? Isn't this what Facebook is for? And here i thought it was the Russians with their sad 100k dollars. And no i im not saying i like it.

People gave applications unrestricted access to their facebook data. People allowed 3rd parties via friends to have access to their facebook data. Facebook SELLS YOUR DATA TO ADVERTISERS BASED ON YOUR PREFERENCES. And yet... people are shocked and amazed when an advertiser they have no relationship with resells their data and uses it in ways that they never intended to be done.

If you had been a facebook user and actually bothered to secure your information and block 3rd party access and by and large had secured your data (not put critical data in) then you would have been just fine and can keep using facebook as you see fit.

If you just created a facebook account imported all of your email contacts and put all of your information in it and played every damn quiz game out there. Guess what. YOU HOSED YOURSELF. This wasn't something malicious. Facebook literally had a sign that said. "We will use your data to let you find and talk to your friends more easily. We will also make it so people that want your data and want to sell directly to you can do this more easily." People then lined up BY THE 100's OF MILLION's to say. "Here have my data I like what you are doing. You're really awesome." Facebook said. "Ok thanks here talk to your friends. if you want them there are privacy settings so non friends and such can't see your data." And people just said. "Meh.. won't happen to me." then they got screwed.

Caveat Emptor. You traded your data for a service. That was the currency exchange. Facebook monetized it and is making billions in profit doing just that.

Let's be honest here. If nothing ever happened to Equifax, do we really expect anything to happen to Facebook?

Only way any leak will ever have an impact is if it's a leak with politicians data. If a bunch of senators credit reports, financial transactions, and personal information were to leak out, you'd better believe they'd move to correct it. Otherwise, the rest of us can go f**k ourselves.

I would love it if Zukerberg walked in with his phone with all of the senators committee members data on it as far as their browsing and chat histories that he's captured.

Senator M. "Mr Zukerberg do you think it's proper to let advertizers have unrestricted access to your users data."

Zukerberg. "Well Senator M we don't do that actually. It is limited and can be further restricted by user prefernces. For instance... after visiting your facebook and talking to constituents last night you went to pornshop.com which is a site well known for catering sex workers in the DC area that fulfill kink's... specifically it seems furry kinks. I'm sure it was a typo in your browser... but we don't sell that sort of data to anyone... Did any other senators have a question about how we handle data?"

This is a total waste of time after they let Equifax off the hook.

How can you seriously pretend to care about data users willingly give to facebook, when you gave no shits about the company that lost most of the countries critical personal information due to gross negligence.....?

Waiting for the next scandal to involve some application from the google app store. Just check the permissions some popular software ask for (e.g. location, full storage, internet, camera and microphone access for a simple flashlight tool).

Because it "swayed the election!!!" and really that's the only narrative people will chase until Trumps 8 years are over.

You Know this..Most the people I know still to this day when you would think they should know dont. The PC cell phone and tablets that every day people use just click on everything to register. Its all just a social network now and is and bandwidth hogging shit. Glad I have never had a facebook account, but I would have somewhat known better if I ever did make one.

Isn't this more about Cambridge Analytica stealing the data, or not deleting it when they said they would or something like that?
