Thought this was a great price on a general use machine. Perfect base for building a cheap gaming, or general purpose rig. Great for family members, and just generally a good machine for the price.

Looks like these come with 475 watt PSUs, so a 1060 or 1070 range card would be fine.

Now --- if you could only find a cheap GPU, for your cheap general purpose rig.

Yeah 4 core 8 thread is OK, but if you can splurge for it 8 cores are as low as like $70 (although lower clock). That is 16 threads too!

My last 2 S30's I bought for $100 ea., free local pickup:

Thinkstation S30
E5-2609
8G ram each
2 x 500G hard drive ea.
Quadro (600?) card
dual port intel pci-e nics included.

What a steal...

Also for $225, you can get dual socket & drop Qty 2 8 cores in :)

24 threads for $282 shipped

i used to use one of these machines as a workstation. Would have ran another 5 years for me easy. Sadly I moved on.

I was happy with my S30 until windows update bricked the computer. That was a huge pain in the ass until they released a BIOS update to fix it. Did that affect you? I want to say it was about a year ago.

I've got proxmox ve on one, and linux on the other two...

I run the mobo out of one and can say I've never had that issue.

I posted about it on the lenovo forums:

lenovo staff who are on the forum as well as engineers ultimately fixed the problem with a patched bios. Users discovered rolling back to an old bios brought the system back to life, and lenovo released a new bios 8 weeks after the issue was first reported. As long as you are running v48 or older for the BIOS, or v60 or newer, you should be ok. The ones in the middle had the problem with a particular windows update.

That's hilarious. I have sold over 100 of those z400/z420 machines the past year in my shop.

They are so rock solid and cheap to upgrade.

Tanks!

I've purchased for our satellite offices some of the 'newer' Dell T1650's. E3-1280 v2, 4C/8T, 3.6ghz base/4.0ghz boost.

Seems the vendor I worked with doesn't have them in stock any more but we optioned them with:
A basic Quadro 1000, the cheapest card they would ship.
32GB of ECC RAM, because we were going to run VMs. 8GB and 16GB were MUCH cheaper options.
We added a pair of 512GB EVO SSDs in RAID1.

Very handy to deploy as Server 2016 Hyper-V and run a pair of VMs on them. All in all, less than $800 ($300 or so just in SSD) out the door for a very quick little box.

Does this happen on the mobo that only supports v1 Xeons? There were two revisions, the second also supports V2. Mine is the V1 only board.

I had the first gen as well for v1 xeons and usb 2.0 front ports instead of 3.0.

The Intel Xeon W3565 CPU won't be getting the Spectre microcode update fix if that matters to anyone. Intel gave Bloomfield processors the shaft.
