Harassment in VR Gaming Apparently a Problem

I honestly can't fathom this mindset of yours.

Is it really too much to expect that people on the internet don't act like dipshits? What you're really suggesting is that immature, disrespectful behaviour ought to be considered normative and that those who don't like it need to suck it up.

Classic victim blaming that is; perhaps you're one of those immature dipshits who had a piss-poor upbringing and who doesn't like this particular finger pointed at you, is that it then?
Seriously, I'll never understand why, when someone says, "Hey, that bothers me, please stop doing it" some feel that they are entitled to continue said behavior rather than apologizing and not doing said behavior again.

A bit different, in VRChat I was talking with some guys and we saw this girl just walking on by with some dude trailing behind her shouting. "You're a cunt! You're a cunt!" You don't see how that might be a little annoying?

Context is important...what if she was in fact a cunt to him?

Also as mentioned

/ignore
/blist
/whatever ignore feature is baked into this.

It is like people forget that literally every online game and social media app since pretty much 2000 has black listing built in.

Remember back in the day when it didn't matter what shooter you were playing, if you weren't teabagged or insulted at least once during a match it felt as if you weren't even in the match? Maybe, these thin skinned players should turn off the voice chat and turn back to text as the mainstay of conversation as a way to step back from the reality of the situation. Or simply give up and return to the real world!

What? It's avatars. No one is being sexually harassed, maybe verbally but then again verbally abuse can happen anywhere. So this has nothing to do with VR gaming.

People in VRChat are being sexually harassed every time they go in, both guys and girls then. People of both sexes choose cute anime avatars and imaginary touch each other's boobs to see the jiggy physics. No one in VRChat has complained that they were physically harassed.

In VRChat you can mute and ignore people. You don't even see them if you turn that on.

Let me sum up the response here: "who cares that people get harassed everyday not just in real life but also online?" Seriously, it gets old. Some of us just want to play games, we grew out of the 12yo phase at like... 12. Why should we have to develop safe spaces everywhere to not be harassed? I'm kinda curious how many of the people in this forum teabag in multiplayer games, and how much things like that fade out as people age. While in my experience it usually is done by shitty players trying to compensate for something because they get steamrolled on the regular or they have no life, it's still dumb, it's still annoying, and it still gets old. People don't pay money for games to get harassed.

And before anyone wants to call me a pansy or something, I grew up in fighting in Detroit and practiced martial art for 20 years... so... no. Just STFU with that ish, and stop harassing people, and stop harassing people who are tired of being harassed. :-/

edit: it's also a pain to have keep /ignore'ing people. This is why monitoring and moderation should be involved, in some form.

Nobody said anything about real life harassment being ok at least not that I saw. Moderation is involved, its called /ignore. If they find a way around it you report them. Whats so hard about that?

A few years ago when I was super into League of Legends, that was probably the worst I'd ever seen online behavior. Eventually it got the point to where when a match would start the first thing I'd do is /mute the entire opposing team. And if my team was losing the match. I'd mute them too. The toxicity was insane.

Dont get me wrong, that shit is childish to do in VR. But to consider those polygonal representations capable of "harassment" is bullshit. You can log out, block ppl, and various other things online. When you are fully able to get away or block the person without legal intervention then I do not think its an issue. That seizure inducing campaign against the journalist was the only form of digital harassment that I know of that I agree with.

/ignore <cunt sayer>

Problem solved.

Context is important...what if she was in fact a cunt to him?

but isn't that just people creating their own safe space because they think they're special snowflakes? Shouldn't they instead just have to deal with it and [H]arden up? Shouldn't these actions just be expected online and be allowed?

...

That survey where people were asked if things like this ever happened to them also reports that 80% of respondents think that blocking users if effective, yet here we have a forum of people bashing others for even responding to the survey while also recommending they do just that.

oh ffs. does VR need a safe space too? What is that 'sport' where people play in giant bubbles? Is that how video games should be where you play multiplayer?
What ever happened to "good sportsmanship"? Courtesy? Good manners? Cooperation?

Apparently MurriKKKins have utterly lost all of that. And the rest of us are the worse for it.

No, harassment is having a chicken being one of the first shootable things in skyrim and then having the entire town attack you.

Sadly seems lost. It is very refreshing to see good sportsmanship in games now and then though when it does happen.

Ever play online video games? I assure you being an asshat online is hardly the exclusive domain of Americans. Actually experience in some of the biggest online games has shown many regions outside north america to be Far FAR more toxic and hostile. But Thanks for playing the "lets bash on americans while pretending to be outraged by peoples behavior online" game.

Oh it's definitely not an exclusive American thing. "You're a cunt" guy had some kind of eastern European accent. And I'm 100% sure the girl he was screaming at muted him. So he was just yelling into the void, annoying everybody else.

You're right AaronGawt, I noticed the same thing. The people complaining that the snowflakes need a safe place, then go ahead and tell them to block and mute people. Ummmm.

I remember once in League of Legends there was a particularily toxic guy on our team. After half an hour, eventually 2 of the guys on our team had him on ignore. Everyone except for me, and his buddy. Though I did tell him I was muting him. So he thought only his buddy could see his bile. It was pretty funny. He'd say, "All of you asshole mid, right fucking now!!!" "I SAID MID!!!" And his buddy would say, "They all muted you dude, remember?" And he'd say, "Fuck, right, tell those fucks to go mid." Then the friend would say, "Ashe would like you guys to go mid, please." Nearly 20 minutes of this. I felt so bad for the friend, he worked so hard.

A lot of the problems with any online social service is that block options are a huge afterthought. For some idiotic reason the creators think "Everyone will be awesome and we won't need to add a block or ignore feature at launch". It is really freaking stupid. This is especially true when it comes to games. If someone is being a douchebag, and there will be people that are, there needs to be good options for users to ignore, block, silence, whatever them so they don't have to be interacted with again.

It's people like you who keep us from having nice things.

When you start considering getting into VR, you need to have a serious talk with yourself. Look deep down and ask yourself, "Am I ready for an eyeful of nuts?".

If you aren't sure or answer no, you may want to stick with the monitor.

Literally no one gives a crap about your outrage culture but the Social Jihadist Warriors who are addicted to crybullying.

As an aside, it is important to make it publicly heard that you do not care either for this manufactured outrage and safe space culture. The more people who mock this neo-Marxist, infantilizing nonsense, the faster the rest of the public feels comfortable publicly agreeing with and stating their distaste for the SJW busybodies infesting our society.
Wow, we just found out who the bully in the group is.

Nice to know. I'll watch the news for your public explosion because you're too insensitive to be decent to other people.

He's a 6th grader that got thru mommy's Net Nanny by swiping the password.

As mocking as you might be about the seriousness of this is on a social media platform, it is a serious issue.

Vr platforms and social media platforms allow people to act out in ways that aren't socially acceptable in the real world. One has to wonder If you treat people as objects in VR how that carries forth in the real world. It's a scary idea if you think about it. You have to realize everyone deserves mutual respect.

While I enjoy a healthy debate on ideas and technology, I don't engage in social media platforms for a reason. It just got too ugly. There is too much disfunction there.
#ThisShitRightHere

A friend was telling me about a MMO where only the Americans act like utter garbage. Chinese players? Seek each other out & cooperate. Canadian players? Seek each other out & cooperate. Other nations' players. Same thing.

American players? Act like middle schoolers who've never had any discipline in their upbringings, shit on everyone they meet, and rarely ever "win" because they can't cooperate and the groups that do annihilate them every time they try to grief them.

Basic courtesy and manners are dead in AmeriKKKa.

There are certain standards for behavior in civilized society, and these people are violating those standards. Don't think for one minute these people don't realize there is a real person they are acting lewdly towards. If this is supposed to be the expected behavior of the gaming society, then we have a problem.
And we wonder why there aren't more female gamers.

Misogyny personified.

Sure i see your point and that sounds like legitimate harassment. I would imagine the chat has some sort of report function she and others like yourself could use in situations like that right?
Apparently not, since this article is about players getting harassed without recourse.

Because persistent asshats like you consistently find ways around the blocks and keep trolling until they just quit the game altogether.

It cheapens the game, ruins the experience for everyone except the asshats (who are definitely the minority), and ultimately hurts the industry.

And when those asshats lose access those games, they will then turn their asshattery to real life, where they end up either causing real harm, or getting harmed themselves.

Yeah, no. Just fucking behave.

Asshole

Next time I see you walking down the street, maybe I should just push you in front of a bus, because, y'know you need to "harden up".

Of course I have. And, in my observations, most players from.other countries exclude American players out of hand, because of their toxic behavior. If they're being hostile to you, it's because other Americans have caused them to hate us automatically.

And I'm not "pretending" at all. I play FPS stuff almost exclusively because of the asshats out there that make a game worthless to play. I deal with asshole 12yos on a daily basis, I don't need to deal with them after work too.

Not to mention if an asshat gets blocked by everyone, he just comes back under a different name & starts again.

Cue madmod candishitoutbutcanttakeit ban in 3...2...1...

Go watch some streams from other regions..you will find that there are many that are extraordinary toxic to each other without americans having a thing to do with it. Western Europe, Korea and China are particularly noteworthy.

Isn't it nice to wish to be a child again?
I wish I was a child at that point! Then I was recalling, with friends I worked with, hosted LAN parties for and played online over dial-up, how funny it was that we used to chase friends around the neighborhood with cap guns and "now" we were sitting in the same room chasing one another around buildings with plasma weapons. :ROFLMAO: ROFL
