HTC hinting at Ver 2?

It's pretty obviously not geared at grabbing new users, but people upgrading from the original Vive.

The whole thing is pretty shitty. You have to keep everything but the HMD from your original which means your HMD is worthless to anyone except someone that broke theirs.

I thought the people saying $350 or $400 were dreaming but I didn't expect $800. Maybe $600.

For $800 I'd really expect 4k or wireless or both.

You also have to wonder what this is going to be priced at once it's bundled. Either it's going to be $1200+ which seems like it won't sell at all or it's going to be less than a grand which screws their early adopters pretty hard.

I bet they will drastically lower the price when they sell it bundled. Considering it's already way cheaper to buy the original bundled than buying the peripherals without the headset.

That's just the price you pay for being an early adopter.

no price...so integrated upgraded audio, wireless adapter coming summertime, smaller and lighter with higher 2880x1600 res. Not bad but nothing revolutionary. Headset only (upgrade) package shipping this quarter, full setup later.
That sounds decent for a lot of us who didnt buy in yet.

Maybe i'll hold off until I see reviews of it with a 1080ti and maybe wait to see what it does with a 2080ti.

I run 1.8x ss so 9MP total with the original Vive and a 1080ti. This thing should do fine with the same card.

I am definitely going to get one. I might wait a month or two and make sure there's no production issues before I jump though.

I mainly want to see how far away objects look on it before buying.

Yeah... 80% more pixels kinda has me sold. I found a lot of good reviews and a few critical, but they all say clarity is way better. One thing I hate is not being able to see far off. Cost isn't a huge factor for me.

I need to find more SDE comparisons.

I just listed two 1070s to pay for a Vive Pro is the FS section. ;)

Anyone know if Kyle is getting one?

It will be good to see your thoughts on the Pro version. I want one myself, but don't have one. So i need the complete package.

I was seriously considering it, but it seems a bit of an interim product. A bit better than the current, but not enough better that I absolutely have to have it now. I would rather have the knuckles controllers, and a better wireless solution, than the pro HMD right now.

I mean, that res is available for half the price in the Samsung odyessey, so why pay double? I picked up an hp headset for 220 that's 1440x1440 as a backup/ portable, I can't figure out what they're thinking with that price.

I'm prob wrong, but just because the hardware is equal for less money doesn't make it better. There is the whole driver/software side of it. Not to mention durability, support, ect.

I am not familiar with the odyssey, does it do room scale?

It's twice the price, and that doesn't include the light houses or controllers, with those it's 3x the price. Maybe it's a little better, but 3x better?

If they get even 1% of current vive owners to upgrade I'd be surprised. There is just not enough with the headset alone to justify the price. Most Vive users have the deluxe audio strap, or better headphones so there is no advantage in that area. I was willing to spend $800 but only for a new Vive Pro full kit with knuckles controllers and lighthouses. But for a headset alone I just can't see most Vive users upgrading the headset alone for the same price they paid for the full vive package. It's like the priced it to fail.

I do think this first run price is a bit high. About $300-400 too high for just the HMD actually, but some will still buy @ $800. Then they will lower the price as needed later to sell inventory.

I am really on the edge tbh. This review seemed pretty unbiased.

The SDE on the original Vive ruined it for me and having it minimized would be huge for me. The early adopter fee feels brutal though! Another review said the SDE is still present but more like noise than looking through a screen door. They also mentioned the 2x4k pimax has SDE so complete elimination might be too hopeful.

So I feel like if I preorder I am going to get screwed. I might wait until April 5th and see where it's in stock.

What would you guys do, preorder from HTC or elsewhere or hit F5 the day of?

I'd definitely wait till the day and get it then. Maybe I am out of touch, but I don't see this as selling out anywhere unless HTC only made a truly small amount (and maybe they did given the price).

Agree. At this price, there should be plenty. I wonder what they have going next. Hopefully not more small increments.

Yeah that's my only concern... if I drop $800 now when is Vive 2 hitting if it's a big increment.

I still think they are going to shy away from 4k for a while.

You cant really shy away from getting better resolution. 1 GPU per eye or have it eble to use sli/cfx. FOV I hope is next.
$400 would of been a good price for a slight upgrade to the Vive. probably why it's called pro instead of 2.
I hope next year they are at that level.

Yeah, I'll just close my eyes and hit buy on April 5th. I don't have the audio strap for the original vive so I will have better audio, way better comfort, better resolution... a bit pricey but oh well.

It's funny how humans think sensing or sense stimulating devices should be free. People buy a $2,000 PC then a shit monitor. Or in automation land they'll buy a $100,000 system and opt for a $100 sensor over the proper $400 (which controls the whole thing). For some reason people think these things should be cheap and free when they are probably the items you should spend a good chunk on.

I won't hold my breath on dual GPU. Even if it is supposively easier for VR. Upscaling to 4k is totally acceptable to me until GPUs catch up.

So they put up a listing for an "accessories pack" for a "sale" price of $450. Normal price is $530 apparently.

https://uploadvr.com/htc-vive-pro-accessories-starter-kit-includes-controllers-base-stations/

What the fuck? That's more expensive than the Vive 1.0 full pack. HTC is on crack with these prices.

I can't fathom many people buying this. I mean, you can get the Odyssey for 1/3 the price of the complete setup, and half even if you already have a Vive! If you have a Vive you can spend $800 for a Pro, or get a Samsung Odyssey for $400 and keep the Vive lighthouses/controllers if you're worried about Windows MR tracking.

There is literally zero reason to buy a Vive Pro at that price that I can see.

You can use vive lighthouses and controllers with the Odyssey? I'll have to check that out.

I mean the Vive Pro may have comfort and better audio or cameras. I wouldn't know, but if the Odyssey could use the lighthouses and controllers... headset tracking might be worse though.

Seems the concensus is Vive rules in tracking which is very important to me to avoid motion sickness.

The $800 is a bit hard to swallow though.

Yes, you need a $20 dongle to simulate the headset for the controllers to communicate, but otherwise they work as they would with a Vive.

Interesting, I didn't know this was possible. How is the HMD tracking for just the headset compared to the Vive stuff?

This review has me a bit afraid. Bad comfort is a huge issue for me.

I also have extremely limited free time so I need shit to just work. I am definitely going with the Vive Pro.

In that video the tracking looks stuttery towards the end. That could be his video capture though.

Comfort is what pushed me to preorder the pro. I've tried Vive 1.0, WMR headsets, and the Oculus Rift and the Vive is significantly more comfortable. I do think it is overpriced, but it is still worth it to me. But I'm a huge vr freak and don't really do any other gaming. To each their own.

Back when I was around 20, making $10/hr at Circuit City, I bought a 21" Sony CRT for $1059 without even thinking twice. That's probably near $2000 present value. If VR is your thing, then I don't see $800 being a crazy amount to spend. It's tempting for me, but I'm going to wait to see what Oculus does, since I'm already invested in their CV1.

For somebody new to VR the Vive pro might be good, but I want to be wowed coming from my Rift.(Or Vive if you have it)
I bet they come out with a Vive 2 when the Rift comes out with something next year. I think it is good to have a few versions like they have video cards. Make top tier need a 1080ti to push it and so forth.

A great analogy might be relating the Vive Pro to the Titan line. Everyone bitches about Titans too but I've had a few with no regrets.

I am warming up to the Pro, Modo 12 (3d modeler, renderer, animations . . .) will have a VR Viewport, the increase resolution would be very much useful there.

I'm thinking of waiting for the next one to come out and hopefully the fov is much better.

Don't worry, I'll keep HTC chugging along in the mean time.

BOOM there goes $846...

What the fuck? Signature of the person who placed the order!? I just read that as I posted this.

Edit: They said they use Fedex. Worst case I drop by the main facility after work. Hopefully they just let my father sign for it... Their support was really good and quick. I wonder if they've taken note to the negativity around it.

Excellent! Can you post pics of what you see in the HMD? It would be nice to see the difference. Is there a comparison with pics of this with the Vive, Rift, and others?

This is the only one I've seen. Not ideal but gives you an idea (best viewed on a large screen).

I have a feeling it'll be larger difference in motion. Still pictures do a piss poor job of displaying aliasing and the like (SDE). Probably because the exposure mauls it.

This thing is supposed to be shipping on April 5th? and I'm reading today that pre-orders were sold out? I ordered mine on Thursday and got it on the 4th of April NZST. The fuck?
