Bethesda announced today that they are releasing a new update for 2016s DOOM, bringing 4k resolution to the Playstation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. Now I know the Glorious PC Master Race has had 4k in DOOM since day one, but we should be happy for the console players... as filthy as they may be. Thanks to cageymaru for the story.

When DOOM launched in 2016, id Software focused on mixing cutting-edge graphics with relentless, fast-paced gameplay for users on all platforms. Now id is pushing the game’s graphics even further with the release of a new 4K Update. Download the update now on PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X and see the game running in 4K now with our new DOOM gameplay video!

No mention of targeted framerate. Surely can't be more than 30 unless they did some serious quality reduction to reach the numbers.

They are shooting for 8fps with dips to 2 in some spots.

Its the original doom from the 90's in 4k, not the new one, consoles can't handle the new one...

Had DOOM 2016 4K in Linux before consoles got it. Get rekt consoles.

Not really sure why threads about everything from Far Cry 5 to Doom 4k on consoles are about Linux to you. If I were to mention Doom VR (a real thing BTW) in a Linux thread, I know how that works.

At any rate there is an interesting point about this: https://www.gamingonlinux.com/artic...e-made-a-linux-version-sound-easy-to-do.11465

As for this console 4k version, any know about the framerate yet?

What is the point of getting the game in 4k when it all looked so washed out at the same resolution as PC anyway.

numbers for the reason of numbers ?

It's nice to see this update would love to see HDR added to. For those Master Race posts -REALLY? PC part prices are a friggin joke right now and it's never been a worse time to think of building a decent gaming PC. That is nothing to be proud of. The 1050ti i bought was 149.99 now sells for over 230 my sons 1060ti i paid 260 for is somewhere in the 350 plus range it's a joke. Ram prices SSD prices all shit right now and now prebuilts are getting slim because people are figuring out thats the cheapest way to get good cards for MSRP. You can buy a Xbox One X and a TCL P55 4K tv for less than a worthy gaming PC right now. I'd love to buy a nice new GPU but not paying the miner tax.

It runs at 60FPS on the older consoles, I can't imagine they would slow it down.

To paraphrase Dickens, "It's a great time to be a PC gamer, it's a bad time to be PC gamer." There's tons of great content, i.e. the software side of PC gaming has never been better. Of course the issue as you state is the cost of hardware. But even on the hardware side there's still a lot of cool shit but the pricing is out of whack.

Yeah, some prices are high right now, but it ebbs and flows. If that's your argument, it really hinges on the current anomalous state of graphics cards, making it pretty weak.

I wouldn't give up the ability change things out and I wouldn't give up the ability to get under the hood and tweak things. This goes for both hardware and software; it's a trip to download mods and make changes to files that make things better than even the best default settings offer.

While I get the appeal of consoles and am happy that they can enjoy this awesome game with greater fidelity, there really is and never has been a substantial argument to be made in comparison to the PC aside from money and for me, the PC is more than worth it.

I couldn't agree more. It's what brought me back to PC 10+ years ago, although I still state the PSone/2 & N64 days were awesome. Many good memories there but that's where they ended.

While I essentially agree with what you are saying, it's significantly more complicated than simple price fluctuations at the moment and probably forever. We used to wonder what could use the computing power that when into PCs. We now have the answer. Everything.

Now that's how I know *FOR SURE* that you're an id Software hater. Care to explain yourself?

Can we get Doom ported to Linux? Kinda makes sense with the OpenGL and Vulkan API's.

I would be very curios how this is a conclusion into ID hate?

I dont know how I can explain that the games looked worse on consoles even at the same resolutions as on a PC but I can show you

if you can't se the difference you dont need 4k anyway

I am sorry. I guess you and I have different definitions of "washed". Though even the PC version has leaves a lot to be desired at 1080p. I am a sucker 120+ FPS but I did use DSR to render the game at 4k on my 1080 panel. It slowed down to ~60 FPS but it looked way, way better. I used to check each level at 4k at first, then play it like a man with over twice that frame rate. That sweet, sweet air control rune

I am not 100% sure why but it has to be their dynamic resolution trickery

It doesn't make it weak.

I am not paying 200 Euros above MSRP for a 1080. Full. Stop.

So if someone has an older system, looks at the games out there and thinks 'hmmm... I'd like to get in on that, but my rig is not up to it, then looks at prices for various components (seen PSUs and RAM lately?) they are going to think twice.

And if that same person already has an XboneX or PS4 Pro, well...

It might be 'PC or nothing' for you, and that's fine, but it doesn't mean you get to call someone else's argument 'weak.

The things you list are great but after doing it for 20 years and the way the prices have just gotten stupid I just don’t care abou that at all anymore. Last powerhouse rig I built was my sons in 2014. It’s got a few upgrades since then. The GPU prices just make me sick now I used to buy GPU’s like candy back in the day but they have just become insane. I haven’t owned a top end card since the Radeon 6970’s it’s lost it’s luster to me after all this time . I’m not looking for converts it’s just the way I chose to play mostly now I still have many games on pc but really only bother with titles I can crossplay with. Especially play anywhere titles. Call me old I’ve just lost the need or want to tweak stuff.

Actually it does because first prices fluctuate and second, it says nothing of the value to others. As such, it isn't an argument for or against anything, it's just a personal choice and not at all universal. Who can argue with an opinion?

It sounds like both consoles will automatically lower resolution below native 4k to maintain 60 fps. But at least it is 60 fps and not 30...

Prices do fluctuate, as they always have, however the recent massive explosion in prices of GPUs is not a 'normal' fluctuation behaviour. As you say, an opinion is an opinion, and in my opinion, you calling someone's argument about massively increased prices 'weak' because of your own, different priorities, is not warranted.

I agree that there is a difference. It's likely texture scaling. However, I disagree in general that this game looks in any way less than amazing. Offering it in higher resolutions for console players is icing for them. There's no possible way to think that this is a bad thing. Sure, PC players will almost always (if not always) have an advantage. Just the way it is.

You're kind of moving the goal posts here. What I said about opinions is that they are - in and of themselves - worthless in an objective comparative discussion. My goal here isn't to promote an agenda, as I really don't care either way...people should enjoy games however they want. But if we are going to engage in the console vs. PC thing, then basing an argument on a convenient anomaly isn't the way to do it.

4K on the original Doom?

I remember some friends getting excited about Duke Nukem 3D @ 640x480 back in the day.
Could ALMOST make out them nipples ;)

Lol when i played it in 1999 with a RiVA TNT2 at 1024x768 i was blown lol, and however the best duke nukem3D version was the launched for Nintendo 64. Sad right?..

And the difference is that the PC looks better because, as you said, PC will always have a [potential] advantage. The game still looks good on console indeed, but that isn't the question (nobody said the console looked bad) and the higher resolution isn't "icing", it's an improvement to that which can be (should be?) improved and might even be seen as an attempt at closer parity with the PC. But yes, great for console players for sure and good on Id for doing it.

Who are you disagreeing with ?
It seems like people just want to read something that i never wrote in the first place.

The only thin i said that i found it weird to focus on resolution when the graphical drawback in the console version was not about resolutions to begin with.
trying to fix the breakes when its the gearshift that is having issues. is the brakes better ok. but it still did not fix the gearshift issue.

Still nothing about this is a testimony to the overall enjoyment of the car

Selling my video cards and spare gaming pc and getting a switch and ps4 pro the last 5 months have been wonders for me. Zelda, Horizon and MHW have been goty for me, and all for cheaper than a 1080ti.

Because I game on Linux and I'm prepared to talk about it? Am I supposd to have more reasoning than that all of a sudden?

It originally ran at 60 FPS on consoles and it still does in 4K. It doesn't look as good as on PC, but it's pretty damned close. Only the Switch version runs at 30 FPS.
