Facebook on Data Collection: You Agreed To It

MS is counting on two things with their spyware in Windows 10: that nobody will be able to see inside the encrypted datastream and therefore never know the full extent of the 2000+ datapoints being collected in Basic mode with full details, and that if it was uncovered somehow then the EULA is full of lawyer language that users *opted in* to telemetry by accepting the EULA.

Facebook data collection is one thing - you can never visit the site or use the apps and avoid telemetry. But when it's baked right into the OS like Windows 10, you can't escape it.
Yet another reason to migrate to another OS...

Yanno, if Faceplant were run the way we think it SHOULD be run, it would be okay. Loads of people get to network their friends and family in one place (unheard of, even in the aftermath of MySpace), and *interact* in nearly real time.

The problem arose when Facebook went from "social media platform" to "SpambotVirusWormDataMinerThief", because the fact is our attention became the most valuable resource on the internet, if not real life.

Just look at spam itself: STILL a billion dollar industry, grabbing as much data as possible to sell to someone for the expressed purpose of separating you from your money. Your information is so valuable that even GROCERY STORES are willing to give up 10-50% or more per purchase, just so they can use, then sell, your personal info and buying habits.

The real problem here is that "Corp-think" stopped including moral and ethical considerations. Business schools only teach greed and profit at all cost; and the fraternity system teaches cheating at all cost. Tied together, you get "cheating for profit", and every other moral precept smeared with shit & flushed down the toilet.

Hate to tell you this, but Facebook was never a "social media platform". They have always been sucking your data well dry. That is how they pay the bills. I am not sure why any of this is a big deal. Google, Apple, Microsoft, Instagram, Snapchat,...hell,...any site which is free to use and poses as a social site, is collecting data and making money off of it. That is how you maximize the cost to advertisers, which is where they get their money.

Google has been the most successful at this model. No love lost between Google and Facebook....I am going to polish my tin foil hat now. Why does Google get away with it, but Facebook does not? Hmmmm. Google stands to benefit from this, directly and indirectly. Seeing as Google spends more money on lobbyists than almost any other company on the planet,...well,,,,,I may need to expand my hat.

i have to agree with FB on this one. I was always anti-social media but finally installed it after much nagging from my g/f to be able to do status updates to brag about where we were. The moment it launched and asked for permissions to basically my entire goddamn system i immediately force quit the app and uninstalled and never looked back. There was no ambiguity or misrepresentation of what they wanted. I simply asked "why in the FUCK does facebook need access to my ENTIRE SYSTEM just to look at peoples statuses and take pictures of my food?"

You didn't have to buy that phone from that carrier....
Don't worry; an unlocked unbranded bloat free rom can be selectively transplanted from a variant of the same model even with a locked bootloader. In my case, yes I do have to use this phone and this carrier. Despite my situation, Facebook and many others should not get a free pass because freedom of choice exists.

Data collection is being forced on us from all angles, including attempts to strip away the ability to configure our own devices, hoping we just become complacent because everyone is doing it. Google is taking action to consider your rooted, custom rom, or lesser known phone hardware uncertifiable and deny you of their services. This trend will be appealing to the carriers as phone hardware variants are becoming increasingly unified and locked down.

Imagine if your ISP won't let you on the internet without a certified computer and OS. When do we draw the line? Should Facebook accept all the blame? No I certainly hope not, this is a very widespread and progressively more dangerous issue. If this all blows over and Facebook gets a slap on the wrist, drawing no attention to all the other companies and the big picture outside from social media, expect much worse to come.
