Head of a very succesful hacker group has been apprehended and arrested in Spain. His organization is said to have stolen over 1 Billion Euros in the last few years. Yes, "billion," with a "B." Anyone taking bets how long he actually stays in jail? We should get an over/under in the works.

Steven Wilson, Head of Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), said: "This global operation is a significant success for international police cooperation against a top level cybercriminal organisation. The arrest of the key figure in this crime group illustrates that cybercriminals can no longer hide behind perceived international anonymity. This is another example where the close cooperation between law enforcement agencies on a worldwide scale and trusted private sector partners is having a major impact on top level cybercriminality."

The criminals would send out to bank employees spear phishing emails with a malicious attachment impersonating legitimate companies. Once downloaded, the malicious software allowed the criminals to remotely control the victims’ infected machines, giving them access to the internal banking network and infecting the servers controlling the ATMs. This provided them with the knowledge they needed to cash out the money.

so regular bank employees were on the same physical/VLAN of the network the ATM servers were on??

WTF????

Guess it depends on which country ends up jailing him, and whether that country benefitted from his hacking.

Probably, though I doubt they were on the same subnet. Doesn't help much if the server is compromised, though... :/

but it took a accident to find the Nigerian prince
