Heya!

My russian girlfriend has considered buying a phone here in Denmark. But we're not sure if it's usable in Russia or not. Both the store we bought it in and Samsung said it SHOULD work, but neither could give me a definitive answer. The guy from Samsung told me to check what bands the phone supported though, and what they use in Russia. Which I did, through gsmarena.com.

The phone in question is a Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 model (SM-A520F). From my understanding, it'll be able to use the 2G and 4G bands in Russia, but NOT the 3G ones. The 3G bands the phone supports, accoding to this website, is HSDPA. But accoding to Samsungs own website, the phone only runs UMTS, which is what they use in Russia, indicating it SHOULD work on 3G.

Our concern is that she lives in a fairly remote location of Russia. 4G is new where she lives, and her understanding is it's still very unstable. Her current phone doesn't support it though, so it's only based on what others are saying in the same area. She says the coverage maps she's been looking at looks good though.

Is anyone able to help us figure out if she can actually use the 3G network on this phone in Russia?

Thanks in advance.

Which carrier or network does she want to sign up with in Russia? They'll tell you what bands you'll need.

Also check to see what bands it will support.. I am guessing if you Google the carrier it will tell you what bands they use and then use the coverage maps to determine if it's lte or hspa type coverage.

According to Frequency Check your phone is 100% compatible with every listed Russian carrier's UMTS 3G bands:)
I personally would still confirm the compatibility by contacting the carrier.

Thanks for the link! It seems like the website I used could be wrong. But I will definitely check with carrier as well as everyone is suggesting :)
