While Android vendors were initially enamored with the idea of adopting iPhone’s facial recognition technology, they are dialing their plans back due to high component costs and potential patent infringement. Instead, the next round of premium phones will include the arguably more practical fingerprint scanner, the newest of which are embedded into the screen.

Supply chain sources said that the unit cost for 3D sensors adopted by iPhone devices hit a high of US$60 as the technology involves substantial efforts in the development of software, hardware, and system integration, significantly pushing up smartphone costs. This has dampened the willingness of China smartphone vendors to incorporate 3D face recognition modules into their devices dedicated for international markets.

If there's haptic feedback so you can tell you're on the sensor, I'm in. Face scanning is clumsier than a fingerprint scanner anyways. The X seems like such a blatant downgrade that way, I was a little surprised Apple got away with it (only a little).

There's a costly way they can do it to, making the sensor HUGE... not cost and such viable probably but it's possible from what I understand of it. And yes please faceunlock isn't to interesting to me but under screen fingerprint sensor is even though I would like to know how secure the fingerprintdata is.... plus the details that fingerprint is technically a "username" not so much password witch should be something only you know.

...and apple will be the last to incorporate the screen scanner, and it will be amazing

Given the exorbitant price of these handsets I really don't see why cost of these is even a question (since this is only for flagship models). They all have like 400-500% profit on these and folks still buy despite an all time high cost and many handsets are well north of $1K. I think it's been since mid 2000's when Nokia mobile communicator was the only device around 1K mark but it was truly flagship and well ahead of its time. Sony has some as well. I mean that was the device I for one really genuinely wanted but could not afford at the time. Right now not so much, I wouldn't mind a better camera but not at these prices, can afford but don't feel the value by a long shot.

I don't have the latest iPhone, but I'd think that finger print scanning is easier. That said, I only use that feature to unlock apps, not the phone itself.

Why the hard on for a scanner on the screen? The one on the back of my phone is good enough.
