BMW will not be mass producing plug-in electric vehicles until at least 2020 because its current tech is not modular and scalable enough to generate adequate profit. Nevertheless, the company still plans to add 25 new electrified models by 2025 with the help of a new production method that will debut in two years’ time.

“If you want to win the race, you must be the most cost competitive in the segment, otherwise you cannot scale up the volume,” [Chief Executive Harald Krueger] said. BMW is working on a sixth generation of its technology and is investing a three-digit-million euro amount in battery cell research to better understand mass production, the company said.

As I was born in 1923, 2020 sounds like a long time in the future. But it's really only 18 or so months away. I think a lot of this electric car, driverless car tomfoolery is gonna get a lot of people killed, and they will have to pry my cold dead hand off of my Corollas manual shifter.

To me this casts more doubt on BMW than it does on EVs. Tesla will make it happen far sooner. Tesla may not make a profit until after 2020, but when they do, they'll have an insurmountable lead and be far more experienced in the EV market.

and again, there is alot of desire by the public to own these types of vehicles. But they are never affordable(be it in resources to build it, repair it, purchase it). Mass adoption will never occur until these type of hurdles are overcome.

BMW could easily make ev's now, it just that they don't want to drop below 5798% profit margin.

BMW, and other's like MB, should love the idea of electric cars. Rather than charging their normal 600x markup on parts, they could charge 1000x markup because it's premium!

Yep, that's what people said about automatic transmissions, now most want them. Be the same way with driverless. And if you have the power why not electric? The acceleration would be great to have even put my f250 8cly to shame and it has a lot of passing power (well unloaded ;) ). You'll only be 97, so maybe you aren't ready for a driverless car, just wait until you're 120 though, you'll want one.

I have to use my pokin' stick to reply, and my front lawn is infested by kids. Those kids really should get off of my lawn, darnit.

I thought that's what electric cars were good at, because they're quiet (well the would be except from some dumb ass law that makes them have beepers in CA...yeah I love CA, but no state is perfect). And yes that's sarcasm, I'm sure there are much more humane ways of getting those kids off the lawn, if I could just think of 'em.

Maybe, but much as I love Tesla, they've sure had a lot of trouble scaling up with the Model 3. Honestly, I think this is good news for Tesla, because it means they have time to get their shit together on mass market cars.
