FX-8350 to Ryzen 5 1600X worth it?

Is the upgrade worth the cost?

When i was just 1080p gaming it wasnt worth it to me at all. I got VR, it was apparent i would need higher FPS, then i got a 144hz monitor too. With a mild overclock I think my FX8320 / Fx6300 rigs will still hit 144fps on overwatch, but im sure a lot of new AAA games they will be 20-30% lower then a stock ryzen system. If i was you, id wait for ryzen 2 / X470 in april.

at 1080P i've seen my ryzen [email protected] over 70% faster in some games than my old dismantled FX 8350@5ghz specially on minimums. And I agree at this point I would just wait for the ryzen refresh.

I am not contesting that, but it wasnt until VR (90hz) or my 144hz monitor that i really wanted an upgrade. Still my FX8320 pulls a solid 155fps in overwatch on epic 1080p so not every game would benefit.

Probably not worth it right now unless money is plentiful.

I recently had a similar dilemma. Keep my oldish FX-8320e VM test box with 32gb of DDR3 OR retire/sell it and upgrade to either R1600 or R1700 on a Microcenter bundle. DDR4 is just STUPIDLY expensive right now, between 2 and 3 times what I paid 2 years ago. 16gb of the cheapest DDR4 I could find was Crucial 2400 for $165 (bundle discount if purchased with mobo combo, otherwise $179). 32GB was $330. This is not great ram, I doubt it would do much over the advertised 2400.

I decided to stick with the FX for now, soley because of the ram. Hopefully ram prices will come down at some point. Just couldn't justify the $150-200 DDR4 price gouge tax right now. I have other things I can drop that coin on, like food or beer.

I'm in the same boat, but I have 160G of ddr3-ecc & e5-2690 (sandy bridge based) as a vm server.. Lets say I downgraded to 64G of ecc & threadripper. It's like a $2,000 upgrade....for 1950x+board+64G of ram.

My other option for more cpu power is to pick up a thinkstation C30 with one cpu for $250 or so, move my E5-2690 over, purchase another E5-2690 for $170 and move my 160G ram over. Then I have 16 cores 32 threads....

personally i think ram prices are only dropping because the chinese government is investigating the manufactures for price fixing SSD's.

I'm in the same situation as the OP. I've got an FX8350 which "needs" to be upgraded to a Ryzen of some flavor. How do I know this? It speaks to me in my dreams. ;)

I'll be waiting for the Ryzen+ release...and reviews. RAM prices need to drop. Once CPU/Mobo/RAM gets to a decent price, I'll buy 'em.

I originally was gonna wait till now to upgrade my 8350, but some a-holes said Fallout4 ran wonderfully on their ryzen so I had to get my current 1800X. :D

Saw some nice deals on 1600 and 1700 bundles at MC but the RAM hasn't budged. I guess by the time the ram market stablizes, Zen+ will be out.

Between ram price gouging BS and the lack of video cards due to the mining craze, it's kind of a shitty time to be building new rigs.

I upgraded back in 2012 to an FX-8350. I currently have 16gb of ram, an nvidia GTX 970 and a nice Samsung SSD.

My system is used primarily for World of Warcraft, Photoshop, Lightroom, and Premiere. I do quite a bit of multitasking.

I’m looking at Ryzen 5 1600X and the cost for the CPU, mobo, and ram (fuck you DDR4 pricing) is $617 out the door. This also includes an AM4 bracket for my current CPU cooler.

Will the cost justify the performance in your opinion? I looked at the 1700X, but I’m mitigating ram prices by considering the 1600X.

Thoughts?
You will get quite a bit more performance.

But if you want to save money and still get as much performance, buy a used Haswell i7 processor and mobo, transplant your RAM.

A Haswell i7 is still in the $225 range plus finding a good used 1150 motherboard. You're still talking $300+. I'd look for someone upgrading to Zen+ and buy their 1600 if you want a deal. RAM pricing sucks, but you can always transplant that between newer builds in the future.

It's quite a step up over those 8xxx chips, even heavily overclocked. You'll get more frames and the frame times are probably better.

At this point, there doesn't seem to be a compelling reason to replace a 6 year old build with a 4 year old build other than saving money on RAM. If you're going to build a new computer anyway, you might as well get something with 6 cores at this point (or 6+ cores with some sort of SMT even better).

Due to a larger than expected bonus and tax return...I splurged. Already built it.

CPU: $296
Board: $219
RAM: $200

** 30 day price matching guarantee at Fry’s Electronics where they’ll refund 110% of the difference.

And since the board supports AM3 coolers, I was able to use my current cooler with Noctua fans.

I am jealous. :) I already have a good Ryzen build but, I love building computers.

yeah, good backup though. 8320 dogged out real bad...9590 though still looking like suppose to, could probably go further but need a block.
I don't know not doing much anyways, could still run like indie titles or old stuff....

Look, lets us be honest with ourselves. Does it matter if you spend the money now or later? Ohhh, DDR4 too expensive!!!! I paid $175 for 16gb (2x8gb) 2667 DDR4 mushkins. I am currently enjoying the Ryzen 1700x/MSI 350B since I don't crossfire. Frankly, here is the truth, you will be grabbing your ankles one way or another. There is no denying it, each day your life becomes shorter until death comes knocking on your door. Trying to save $20 to $50 here and there is moot in my opinion.

Just buy it or not....find a way to move forward! '-)

upgraded from the same processor and not regretting it.. fx83xx was weird in some game huge gain in assassins creed origins, better low fps etc.. been able to oc it at 4.0ghz so not complaining here

New Ryzen is out and I'm tired of waiting. I do think I will start with 16gb and see how it fares rather than dropping the $400 for 32GB DDR4 all at once.

MC has bundles, 2700x with asrock ab350 for 349 after 20 MIR, or the 2700 with same mobo for 30 bucks less. I don't care about the wraith cooler, I have a push/pull Hyper 212 with AM4 bracket standing by... just glanced on ebay and I should be able to get $25-30 for the heatsink maybe. Wondering if the 3.2ghz vs 3.7ghz and the higher turbo speed makes the 2700x worth the extra $30... (or maybe a wash if I sell the HS)

Wondering how hard it is to overclock the new Ryzens and still keep cool n quiet (or whatever the Ryzen version is called). I hated OC my FX chips and broke CNQ, running full throttle all the time. Space heaters.

yeah it is i own the 1600x i would recommend going to the 2600 or 2600x wtih a x470 board for better memory compability

alot of the x370 boards had shitty vrm's and weren't putting out the rated power phases they claimed. Its hit or miss on those boards but they seem to correct or improved that on x470 boards.

holy shit a board and a 2700x for $349 i would jump on that

Tempting, but I want to see what the newer B450 boards look like first. If the B450 Strix board is anything like the B350 version, I'll probably buy that. Way easier to work with than the X370-Pro board I used.

yeha i got teh asus rog strix x370 i gaming because the B350 version was out of stock for like a couple of weeks plus they had sale made it only $40 more but the the thing is the boards are identical in features so its like wtf asus. they improved the x470 version by adding hdmi out if you want to run a APU

i wouldn't touch x370 or b350 at this point for a new build.

I was thinking the same, but I looked at my local MC & the only x470 boards are like $180-$250...so much for bundle savins.

X370 boards I think start at $130.

Yeah the x470 board prices put a halt on my motives. Only one my MC had in stock was a $215 Asus one. About $100 more than I care to spend on a mobo. I did pick up a second hand 1700 from an upgrader on the forums, so keep an eye on the FS/FT thread? I still want a 2700x but I can wait a little bit for my primary rig. So I'm going to pick up an open box B350 board on the cheap for that one.

I read somewhere B450 boards are coming soon, so with those and more X470 boards trickling in, hopefully the price picture will improve.

Hoping on this too.

Here is what is holding me back:

1) Ryzen 1xxx have the weird linux segfault issue. I can't spend time possibly figuring out weird issues like this. I hope this is solved in ryzen2 from the outset...?
2) DDR4 is insanely expensive..maybe go for 2 x 4GB?
3) Lack of budget x470 boards
4) Possible compatibility issues with x370 boards as some may have been on the shelf & have a bios that doesn't work with the Ryzen 2xxx
5) Spectre...this fixed already on release?

I think my upgrade would be to a Ryzen 5 2600x (from an i7-4470k...worth it?) If I could be confident all of the above won't be issues..

In the meanwhile I see nothing really compelling from intel.

With all that said, I've been spending my $$$ on networking equipment. I just picked up a CRS317 Mikrotik 16 port 10G switch and convering my lan to 10gbe (either copper/dac or fiber sfp+). Also re-doing wifi with mikrotik stuff & learning their wireless controller configuration.

Take your time, read reviews etc. As far as your concerns:
1) Segfault issue was handled in silicon with a minor revision last year
2) DDR4 is coming down a little so time may be your friend. China suggesting RAM price fixing issue investigation brought spot prices down in one day. May be more drops coming, Dunno.
3) There is one Gigabyte X470 board on Amazon for $139 plus more boards and chipset variations coming.
4) Boot kit available, but it looks like 2000 ready X3xx boards are coming into stock.
5) Not sure, but I believe Spectre issue will be resolved in BIOS with the recently released AGESA from AMD.
Time is your friend.

2) DDR4 is insanely expensive..maybe go for 2 x 4GB?

I just bought 32gb of DDR4 3000mhz, Newegg has Teamgroup 16gb kits on sale for $140 each. I can't say I have any real experience with this ram, but the reviews were decent and said worked ok with Ryzen... also the next cheapest stuff (G Skill) was still $25 more per kit.

I think the sale ends today... but I'm sure there will be more. Prices are trickling down.

use code EMCXPTRE2

I'm replacing a 32gb system I run VMs and stuff on, I thought I was going with 16gb due to price, but with these on sale I thought I better get matching stuff while I can.
