I bought a crossover 2795 and it lasted almost 3 yrs. The end starting manifesting 2 days ago, when the panel would flicker the image on and off, turning it on and off would help, and plugging the power cable in and out. Watching a video at a certain part where there was a flash in the video would cause the whole screen to strobe on and off. Finally sometime yesterday it failed severely. On post it would flicker dimly the bios icon, and once it got to windows log in nothing would show and sometimes you would see and actifact on part of the screen strobe in for a sec.
I've been forced to take over the large tv in the living room to do my college work, but it's uncomfortable to have all these wires in the middle.
The monitor was overclocked at one point to 100Hz, it tested around 115Hz max. I usually ran it at 90Hz, and at stock since my ryzen rebuild. I still used a Gtx970, but I might upgrade in the future when newer stuff comes out, or the mining stuff chills out a bit and prices become more reasonable. I've been content with my current performance.
What do do you guys reccomend?
Uses. Photography editing, gaming, school work and watching videos.
Budget? Around $500
Here's the tough part, size and resolution. I think 27 inch 1440 is not bad at all. I thought about going 21:9, but support in games is not the best, some content wont fill the screen. 4K would be interesting, but I am not sure if id work well with my current video card and there's the whole windows scaling junk. Id like something that can run faster than 60Hz, Preferably 85 and higher. Maybe 120 or higher. I think I might have to go IPS, PLS, or similar for the photo editing. I wonder if 30' something at 16:9 would be too large?
Thanks for the help guys. Today is my long day at school, but I need a monitor. If I have enough time when I get back I might try to strip the cross-over, maybe it's something loose or that I can mend.

Personally I like the dell ultrasharp line of monitors, not sure if they fast enough refresh rate wise for you but, I have had no problem playing games at 60hz, which is the max for my ultrsharp monitor.

Plus, they are a no hassle company when it comes to rma’s etc.

How much do you want to spend? Whatever you get I would make sure it's GSYNC.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll look into it. you'd think by now prices would have dropped on some of this stuff.
How much better is gsync? I kind of miss my old Sony FW900 but the overclock korean could never touch it. I think after a while you get used to it and your vision ignores some of the flaws.
Would you go 30' or ultra wide over the 27" Gsync? What about the 1ms versions with TN and VA gsync? I feel like my monitor picked a bad time to go bad, maybe the whole nvidia big format gaming would have pushed prices down on some of the cheaper stuff.

Gsync is for people who can't handle a little tearing in their lives :D

It's synced variable refresh rate. That means if your GPU puts out 44 frames this second, and then 55 frames the next second, then the monitor switches it's refresh rate to those. If you were running with classic vsync 144hz, the frame rate drops to the next whole divisor (1/2, 1/3, 1/4). So it would drop down to 36 fps (144/3) for the first second, and then 144/2 = 48 the next second. Gsync makes sure you display all 44 frames the first second, and then all 55 frames the next second, with no tearing.

It's useful for people who can't handle the tearing you get when you turn-off vsync. But the response time for Gsync is the same as if you turned-off vsync.

If you happily ran your previous monitors without vsync, then there's no real benefit for you. The $450 display I linked has the exact same response time and nearly the same refresh rate, just no Gsync.

And both the monitors in my first post are Freesync, which is the cheaper version from AMD. If you ever end-up with an AMD GPU, you get mostly the same functionality as GSYNC.

VA has a slower response time than IPS or TN. You'll see blur because most of it's transitions are nowhere near that 1ms spec.

GSYNC is the biggest upgrade you can make for gaming. It's as huge as going from HDD to SSD for general PC use. GSYNC is a must have IMO. It's worth paying extra and sacrificing money from other hardware upgrades.

What do you guys think about Asus ROG Strix XG35VQ $100 More than the ViewSonic but wider.

NVM. Its freesync

Is no tearing on your 27+ inch 144Hz worth cutting your monitor selection down to just a few? BECAUSE THAT IS THE REALITY OF GSYNC.

This is why I asked in my post above how much tearing bothered you in any of your previous monitors. I assume your turned vsync off if you were running games that push a fast 90 Hz LCD?

Or are you a fan of vsync, and hate the performance inconsistencies?

Tell us what's going on in that head of you, and I'll do the legwork. But otherwise you're stuck doing it yourself. I already helped you find what you asked for in your OP.

I lived with it . But I'd rather not. I do see it. It's sometimes hard not to acknowledge the elephant in the room .

Fair.

But most people buying these high-end monitors don't game heavily on them OR already use AMD cards, OR can't justify the $150 premium. So that's why there's a very small choice of monitors with "everything plus IPS plus GSYNC." They also, up until recently, suffered from panel flicker issues. But I imagine those should be sorted by now, since we have a new entry from Viewsonic.

If you don't want to compromise on spec sheet, then you're going to have to compromise on size.

You're probably stuck with 27" if you want all-of-the-above plus GSYNC. And I already told you which one to get. Or you have to compromise on Ultra-wide, but those start at $1000.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-UltraWide-Widescreen-X34/dp/B016GNX4SE

Nvidia knows they've got you by the balls. That's why they're not rushing to make a GSYNC ASIC (to cut the price), or support Freesync. They could take either path if they wanted to make VRR universal.

By buying an overpriced GSYNC monitor, you are encouraging Nvidia to change nothing. Hope you enjoy paying this premium on every future monitor you buy.

Yeah .Too bad the whole oled monitor never picked up . Dell made one they barely pushed and the other manufacturers haven't bothered.

I think the big blow in gaming ATM are the higher prices on video cards due to mining . Been reading that the MSRP will be higher on the next Nvidias .
Does tearing bother you? I never saw testing on the crt .

He does photo work. Otherwise that would have been my first suggestion.

The color quality is pretty good for TN, but not as good as the ROG Swift was. You'd have t do some tweaking.

OP, what is most important to you photography or gaming?

At $500 USD you are making a lot of compromises to get Gsync with the rest of your specs. Do you really want to trim down the resolution? Last photographer I worked with kept asking me when 8K monitors would be available because his 4K didn't show enough pixels from his 30-40 megapixel DSLR cameras.

Are you studying to be a game developer? If so Gsync is important and the TN starts looking appealing even if it isn't optimal for photography.

Conversely, if photography is part of your future involving an income then a large VA or IPS panel starts having appeal within your budget even without >60Hz refresh, Gsync, or fast transitions (in the case of VA).

If you must have both then I recommend you don't buy anything at all - save up until you have the budget for a no-holds-barred display.

Otherwise you will reach the limits of your purchase way too soon to be happy with your personal ROI level.

If there's not a good fit out there that's new, why not get the same thing you had if it's still available? I'm sure it would be around the same price point you paid previously or lower.

Well I increased my budget to $700ish I could get close to 1k for the right monitor, I rather do it right since it's a long term investment.
It's funny, not studying either of those things. I do photography as a hobby and have taken some courses in the subject. Don't do anything on the game creation industry. I do sometimes get to use some annoying software called spss where we have to run some virtualization and remote access some stuff. I'm studying biology.
I'd like to find a good balance between gaming and productivity.

I don't wan't to do the whole Korean overclock monitor stuff anymore. it was a deal when there was nothing else in the market that was over-clockable but I am not content that it lasted barely over 2yrs 1/2. I even toyed with the idea of those LG oled that have been going on sale and really going past my budget, but they are too large. I have taken over the 70 inch screen in the house and it's a bit uncomfortable since it's too large and it's 1080P. Great for movies, television, and consoles, but too large and limited in resolution for computer work.

The viewsonic recommended looks really nice, Just been looking around trying to see if I find a better deal on something a little bigger for a bit more. all i've seen so far is lots of deal on freesync monitors, and there's a deal on the alienware widescreen at newegg.

I did have a chance to open up the monitor last night. Wiring looks fine, capacitors look in good condition. This leaves either the backlight blew or one of the motherboards dead.

I definitely understand about not going the Korean route again considering better monitors have a 3 year warranty.

I'm glad you got a taste of the 70" as a monitor. Back before I ever used something big like that, I thought it would be awesome. Looking all around the screen for the mouse isn't as fun when it's like looking for a mouse in the sky, lol.

I think you're headed in the right direction. The 'right one' will find you as you find it, in my experience. (y)

I have a 32" glossy 4K and its the perfect size. Not too big or too small. Anything bigger will be too big though. Also have a 24" 1440p 144hz modded to make it glossy. 4K is nice but 144hz is better for gaming. 4K for browsing and movies.

It's still somewhat awesome for some uses but with the lack of resolution it limits productivity. I think it's something that might be do-able if I had more space, maybe a floating desk of some sort just for the keyboard and mouse, way longer wires or re-located equipment like the router (I like to have my desktop with a direct connection, none of that wireless stuff). Another thing that hurts it is that when I purchase the tv I didn't get it with the intention of using it with the pc, so the input lag is not ideal. The other ppl in the house moved the actual tv remote so the comcast one does not have the same level of control, aka pc mode, ect, not worth the effort to mess around for something that's a minor setback. I also figured out that for some reason windows decided to do scaling so it was set up at 125% or so, I dialed it back down to 100% stock, you don't need scaling with a tv this large and such a low resolution.

The new monitor is supposed to come in tomorrow. Hopefully the storm didn't create any setbacks on the delivery estimate.

The oled55b7a 55' oled 4k tv keeps popping up on sale at reasonable pricing. Part of me dreams of frolicking with that as an adventure. But 55' is too large for computer use. Maybe it if was 40' something it would have been at a more manageable size.
I wish LG or one of the other companies would make oled monitors at appealing pricing. Dell oled was expensive and eventually discontinued.

Yeah, for me resolution is the real deal. I don't mind sticking my head in my Lacie 22" crt running 2560x1600 because I can still see more on the screen. Having a nice and large picture is neat, but not for productivity. (And I hear you on the wired ethernet--nothing less for me either--I consider wireless a toy.)

I once saw a 55" used as a presentation 'whiteboard' in an office as a way to entice clients with nice full screen presentations. I can see this making sense that way, but otherwise you have to be about 3 feet away to keep from moving your neck around the screen. That's the problem with 4k even at 40". I tried an LG 4k tv being used at frys as a monitor. Since I have the Dell 30" at home I thought it wouldn't be that big of an adjustment, but the thing is just simply too tall. I found my neck weary within minutes. 30-32" is the sweet spot, but no one makes those because no one is willing to pay for them when a tv in that size will be 1/2 the price.

If you ordered it from B&H (or any other northeast distributor), you may have some delays since UPS suspended shipping in those areas for a day or so during the storm, but a day delay isn't too bad considering the magnitude of that storm. 15" of snow in a day?!? I don't know how a city could handle that.

I used to love my CRT but I gave up on the whole thing . They been out of production for so long that some tubes are getting too old . A lot of video cards don't come with ramdac anymore so they can't convert the signal anymore. Constant recalibration from drifting g2 voltage. Weight, space, and Radiation.

Ideally FED and SED should have taken over but then LCD manufacturing got cheap. I'll tell you one thing, some things aren't built like they used to .

Ordered from abt . Status says it's in Chelmsford . Last night a good chunk of the city was dark. I live downtown so I was unaffected besides lights dimming once in a blue moon .
Most damage in my surrounding areas are from untrimmed trees falling on things, we barely saw 6-8 inches .Most of the cities really close to the ocean got hit hard by the winds forcing water to spray and freeze. I think they rather close places because it's easier with the cleanup and not getting stuck compared to when I was a kid and they barely closed .

I have a 32" 4k with a pair of 20" 1200x1600's flanking it. Switching to the one size larger cursors (also with thicker edge lines) in accessibility settings really helped with finding the cursor when I forgot where I left it. I still have the feature to pulse a collapsing circle around the cursor when hitting control on, but found myself using it at lot less with the bigger cursors enabled. Kinda wish I could make the same adjustment in a few games actually...

Yeah, I still have a CRT myself and was dead set on the because I couldn't get high resolutions cheap. But now that prices have come down, it's hard to see CRTs having a future with me, although I'll run the ones I have until they die, that's for sure.

Sounds like the weather there is pretty bad. Might be more than a day delay for sure.

Got it setup. Took a while, had to re-wire everything back, clean the case a bit, re-did speakers. I would scale back my speakers to 3.1, but the integrated sound card will do 2.1, 4.1 and then 5.1. No 3.1 setup. I really need a new table/desk, but it's not a priority in the budget atm. I think the old sony fw900 did a number on it.

So far colors are pleasant out of the box, I might mess with calibration later on for photography. To get it to 165Hz you have to go into the menu and enable overclock, and then the option to go beyond 144Hz shows up on Nvidia control panel. I wonder if running it maxed out shortens the display lifespan.

I like the stand, the coloring is subtle on it. It's definitely better than the Korean one 100X, but it's still wobblier than what I would like to. I like that they limited on how much glossy stuff they used. It's mostly matte, and on the base there's a glossy diamond like part that stands out, Non glossy is better to clean, I don't think it's fat PS3 bad. There's an odd overhang on the base that makes the base larger than it needs to be. There's no assembly to the stand, it's attacked, setup on vertical mode.

When I first ran it it wouldn't display. Went on OSD, changed from HDMI to DP, nothing, looks like I had failed to secure the DP cable on the monitor side, even thou I could have sworn I clicked it in place. it's my first DP device, not bad at all. There's some wiring for USB, but I haven't bothered with it. not sure I want extra things running off it.

https://imgur.com/a/4hSMX Here are some pics, sorry it's not nicer, still cleaning up, and it's night time.

Testing so far. Tried Path of exile, runs butter smooth, no jerking. The screen I think has some sort of anti-glare filter. But it's done right, it's not killing sharpness or detail. Doing things in general feel more natural, it's one of those things that's hard to explain, because they have to be experienced. It's a lot closer to the crt speed experience than before. I can't find data on the range that gsync works on this monitor, aka minimum frame-rate.

Looks nice and clean and reminds me of my 30" Dells. (y)

Love seeing the old Linksys AP still chugging along. I actually have 3 of these doing the same after they spent a decade working at a hotel, and I even have 1 more that I haven't set up yet.

One thing I've always done for 4 speaker setups if I have to have them all in front of me is to turn the rear speakers 90 degrees so they fire out to the sides. This way the sound at least attempts to come from a different direction like it's designed to do. :)

Those old linksys are great, had to bring mine out of retirement when the verizon modem/router wireless portion started acting up. Would run 1Mbps even with reset. My home connection would not even push the old linksys to it's limit. Up here the only choice I have is the 15Mbps dsl or Comcast. Comcast is jacking up it's price every day.
It's true, don't see many 30' 2560x1600 monitors anymore. I really need to move from this integrated card, I miss creative's smart volume feature that would even out the volumes, too many inconsistent videos in youtube and it was great for night use. Too bad Microsoft hit accelerated audio a few years ago. New card looks interested, except the use of the floppy 4 pin power cable. At least they aren't making those fatal1ty cards anymore, big waste of royalty fees.

It's amazing how many people throwing away routers that can do 'only' 30-40Mbps because they forget that not everyone in the US has 100Mbps internet. I still have an older netgear fvs214 that can take 2 different wans, but is limited to 11Mbps on each wan. But still very usable if that's all you got and load balancing and gigabit switch as well. Our Linksys APs are a dead relaible 20Mbps+ no matter where we are, so I just leave them in place. We don't have anything wireless that really can go much faster than that anyways.

It's amazing how far sounds cards have come. There's actually some nice ones popping up here time-to-time. I still remember when our AWE32 with the Yamaha Waveblaster add-on card was unreal...
