They had better optimize it for their business, or else they could face a stockholder revolt. Corporations exist to create gains for the investors, everything else is gravy. They certainly don't exist to serve society or "do good". Now if those things increase the value of the corporation, then of course they will do them. But it is never out of altruism.

I agree that cries of 1st Amendment! are too often wrongly trotted out in regards to private corporations, but I think most people are conflating it with free speech in general, which is a ideological stance—as opposed to a legal one—that can properly be applied to corporations.

They are literally attempting to find a way to censor any opinion that the individuals in charge are in opposition to. This goes against everything that the internet and freedom of expression stands for.

What are you talking about? As someone on the left who cares about things like fair work practices, environmental protection, regulation of financial institutions big enough to crash the economy, anti-corruption, etc., "SJW" is a valid term. It means the portion of the left obsessed with identity politics and generally being rampant about political correctness, censorship, and obsession with being offended and serve as useful idiots detracting from addressing real issues that threaten the status quo. They're doubly-damaging, as they're often the loudest and most public, so the right sees them as representing ALL of the left and thus dismissing any actually beneficial platforms on the left for completely bogus reasons. That just reinforces identity politics even further and leads to a complete shit show of anything resembling coherent discussion. It's a very real segment of the left which substantially undermines it. If you don't like the acronym, what the hell do you call it?

We already have those enemies of the left tagged and hung out to dry, where the right still struggles to explain how the "real" conservatives never wanted this train wreck of bigoted, racist idiots currently in charge; and what to call them! That's what happens when you merge with "tea party patriots" who have no good intentions and only accelerate the crazy train. It was obvious in 2008, and it's here now. I think you're in a different reality if you think the the left has sorted out its problems. Yes, it's good at identifying people who are essentially acting like the right wing, except on social issues, but that segment is still totally the one running the show. Making it a left v. right issue is exactly how there will never be any progress. The most important issues align with big money interests v. what average people want / need much more accurately. But whatever, enjoy your baiting.

I think verified accounts work from the perspective of "Yes, this is the persons real name". Helps with the anomaly quotient. Doesn't solve it, because some people don't mind being jerks under their real name. But it can help to filter out A LOT of noise.

The problem is, it's being used as a circle-jerk for "the in crowd". On top of that, people who are legitimately verified have been "unverified" afterward.

I didn't mean to imply it's useful today - it isn't for the reasons you pointed out. But it could be useful if it was a "this person is who they say they are" instead of the virtue signaling platform it's turned into o_O
