The title should be 1 volume OR multiple volumes (not sure why I can't edit the thread title).

I just got a Synology ds 1817+.
I have 6 8TB drives, though 1 is currently in use outside the NAS.

Is there an advantage to having multiple volumes? I'd read somewhere that it was useful for quotas (their example dealt with backups and not letting them take over your nas), but I've also read that I can just create a user for a particular task and put a quota limit on it..

Should I just start with less drives and decide later (since I believe I cannot decrease the size of a volume/storage pool once it's created)

Thanks all. This is new territory for me.

Personally if it were me, less headache in just having one large volume, especially where gains of multiple volumes aren't a very big "thing". There's an interesting discussion which took place over on the Synology forums about this. It may help you get a better idea of what you want to do:

Thanks. I read that a day or so back, but was hoping others with experience had some input. That page notes that you might not want to put your backups on your main volume, though I don't know why, unless you're going to yank out a drive for offsite storage.

I think I'm going to start off with 3-4 drives (which is plenty for now) and then decide if I want to make a 2nd volume. Kinda like I"m waiting to decide on whether I want to do SHR2, since apparently you can go from 1->2, but not from 2->1.
