Is buying an Nvidia GPU today a bit foolish, if Volta is (said to be) coming soon?

Some AIB's definitely do, and you can also get it the reference design from nV when it comes out.

Hopefully nVidia will announce you can preorder on the day of GTC, damn I am desperate need of a new GPU for the new build. :( Would use my GTX 1070 but found out the hard way it didn't fit my case, height limitation. I suppose I can get a riser cable and just ghetto it for a while.

dude sell it lol, if its brand new you can get a 700 to a grand for it! Granted then you can't play games but guess what ever your priority is.

If I had a card I couldn't use right now, I would sell it lol.

I would buy anything I needed at a reasonable price. You can still get an $8XX 1080ti from amazon or evga if you put forth a little effort.

I'm of the opinion that Nvidia recently decided just to refresh their current lineup with ddr6 and may not ship anything until summer.

Lol I am still using it with my i5 3570k, the plan was to use it with my 8700k until next gen GPU is out and then give it to my nephew for his build since my old GTX 680 isn't cutting out for him. I could just swapped all the parts and use my old case but I am kinda lazy at the moment. It is a teachable moment for me, always research the gpu height limitation for cases.

Yeah, I'd bet both AMD and nV saw the disaster with the current RAM/VRAM, and decided "fuck it, we'll just sell every last card that's already made now, and just start filling our warehouses with all the new stuff, so that, when we release it, we'd make a mountain of money to satisfy gamers and computes/miners, so we'd have enough to keep working on even better new stuff; and at least that way, we won't be stuck with outdated inventory that we can't sell". I think it would make sense to me, if I were nVidia or AMD.

Also, yeah, I wouldn't sell anything right now, unless I really needed the money. I'd find a way to use the GTX 1070 - get a new case, or get a riser, or whatever else. It's a nice freaking card :)

It won't be. Pascal had the advantage of a die shrink and a second-gen efficiency bump (after Maxwell). The efficiency improvements for Volta/Ampere/whatever it's called will be even smaller than Maxwell.

Maxwell was the single biggest efficiency bump we're ever seen. Power reduced by 70% on the same process node was no joke.

THE BIGGEST performance increase EVER was the 7900 GTX to 8800 GTX. That was DOUBLE performance, on the same process node. But it came at double the power consumption, and massive die size.

Interesting you mention that, because Volta's MINING per watt improvement is about that much, and that is including HBM and unused tensor cores.

Mining, you know those little guys not really affecting the market all that much, just double MSRP and fucked supply.

wonder why amd and nvidia dont just mine themselves? , heard they have a great connection for cheap video cards......

Too bad its embedded
Not really embedded, its basically their GTX 1080 mini itx 8g card with a bigger fan plugged into their external gpu box, it does limit its upgradeability, since it only fits mini version.

Buying Manager@ Massdrop

Howdy Everyone,
I can not speak for other retailers out there but Massdrop is not tricking anyone here and certainly not jacking up the prices and we would never do that. We are community first and always will be.
There is a couple of reason why there is a shortage and also such a high demand of cards.
First the shortage. All new cell phones coming out by Apple and Samsung (and others) last year started using the same memory as graphics cards. Apple and Samsung are willing to pay more for this memory to make sure they get it first and all of it that they need. This has created a shortage of memory for the much smaller companies like MSI, Gigabyte, Asus, and EVGA to make graphics cards.
Next the demand This is obvious as the mining craze thats been going on has created a huge demand in the market as miners are goblin up just about every card available on earth.
These two things combined has just made it a tough time for any system builder out there that just wants a card or two for their rig.
The pricing in the market will most likely continue to go up through Q3 of this year most likely before we start seeing any type of relief. So, unfortunately the end to this is not right around the corner and we have not seen the worst of it yet.
Let me finish by telling everyone on Massdrop this. I will continue to list graphics cards that I can for the community if I am able to offer a competitive price. Also, as I have mentioned in other graphics cards drops we are selling this for right above our cost just barely covering back end expenses.
Why should Massdrop offer these cards above MSRP? Well, there are still customers who want to build computers now and not wait 6, 9, 12 months for the market to stabilize. So as long as I can bring them a better deal than what is currently available I will continue to do so. That being said MSRP is kind of out the window at this point so keep your eye on market price VS Massdrop as you will not see any cards out there anywhere close to MSRP for a while to come.
Cheers.

Pretty much the primary reason for the graphics card supply issues is a memory supply issue. Cryptomining is a secondary cause of this.

Unfortunately for this market everything hit at the same time.

This might be affecting nV's next gen launch!

I would have to agree with memory supply vs mining.
My area has GPUs starting to sit in CL, with prices dropping.
I'll know when mining in my area is dead when my CL is glutted with celerons again.

GDDR6 is separate though, isn't it? GTX Volta will be announced by the end of this month, count on it. 100%.

Yes its separate, but a gv104 most likely doesn't need GDDR6, it all depends on the bus size and we know faster gddr5x chips are now available than when gp104 chips were launched. We also saw when the gtx 1080 was updated to this faster variant it didn't make much of a difference to performance which means it couldn't use that extra bandwidth.

Who says they aren't? NVIDIA in particular has a huge server farm waiting for DRIVE PX to go online. They would be crazy to not utilize those resources to make money in the meantime.

I guess the 290X or 780Ti from 2014 are still decent cards depending on what you're doing with them.

The 290 I pulled when i put my 1080 in a few months ago was still playing everything fine at 1440p. I can't decide if I should sell it while I can or keep holding it as a backup.

I wish I had jumped for the chance to get the 4 GB 290x versions for $270 when I had a chance (new) but I wanted to see what the Polaris launch would bring. By the time it launched and it was what it was the 290x was no longer selling new that I could find.
