Question guys, if your on latest 390.77 nvidia drivers on a 1060

If your on the latest nvidia drivers on a 1060 and swap out for a 1080ti ( for example ) do you need to reinstall any drivers or do you just plug it in and go?
 
You can plug-in-go, but I'd recommend re-installing drivers anyways.
 
remove it from device manager, shut down, install 1080, power up, boot and reboot. should be gtg.
 
Swap and reinstall drivers. No need to do anything crazy.

So no one knows for sure lol. I thought the 10 series official drivers are the same for all and once the latest is installed you could swap to any other 10 series card with no issues.
 
they are the same and windows will use them just fine. yes you can just swap between and it should work BUT sometimes windows can be a bitch about the switch. so that's why I said to remove it from device manager first so windows sees the change properly.

People do it daily all over the world. No need to make something big out of nothing ;)
 
When you swap in a different GPU 9 times out of 10 you WILL need to reinstall the driver. Even if both cards are Nvidia. Even if both cards are from the same generation. Installing a new card will result in a boot to VGA mode with no drivers loaded. Windows will eventually fetch and install drivers from the Windows Update server on it's own, but those will typically be a few revisions older than what you'd download direct from Nvidia.

The only exception would be if you swapped in the exact same model card from the exact same vendor. Then you've got a good chance of not having to do anything.

Whateve, it's not a big deal. Run Nvidia's driver installer, choose the 'Clean install' option, and bam.

Thanks bud

Just gonna do the usual uninstall all nvidia related stuff and reinstall latest nvidia drivers direct from them when the new videocard is in. Was just trying to figure out if i was wasting my time doing this crap or not lol.
