I feel really silly asking but I cant even formulate the grammar to search it online. I have a 60" TV that I wanted to give to a friend. They have a lot of home movies, movies in general they currently watch directly from USB on a smaller smartTV.

Is there a device I can add to this 60" TV that provides that functionality? It accessing a USB drive as an input via HDMI? Its only USB port is for firmware work.

Thanks -

The Smart TV they have now is basically just a computer that can read the USB stick and decode the videos to be displayed on the TV.. To replication that functionality, you would have to use an HTPC or another external "Smart" device of some sort (home theater, bluray player, PS4 etc).

Roku box, WDTV Live (these are really good, but they seem to have gotten expensive in the used market as WD stopped making them).
Raspberry Pi

some bluray and DVD players have the ability to play media from a USB stick as well, I have never used one so I am not sure how good they are or how compatible they are with the different file types.

I have a WDTV Live Hub with an internal 1TB Drive that I would sell, but I am not sure if you or they want to pay the $150 I want for it.

some people want a couple of arms and a leg for them, lol

most blueray players have a usb port for playing movies. ive played everything but .265 and really large files on a sony unit for years. or get a compute stick.

appreciate it all - i bought the newest Roku since I had a lot of AMEX points - looks like that may do the trick.
If not, I may be very interested in that WDTV device Zepher ; I will know if this works by Saturday - my only concern is audio codex playback through the Roku

You could also get a RaspberryPi, load up Kodi on it. It has plenty of USB and HDMI out.
