Nice! I missed the deal on these when they were $139.99/pair on Amazon quite a while back (same seller, Proaudiostar btw). Do I still need a pair? Hmm...

They are reported to sound great. You'll be hard pressed not to read favorable things about them.

They're good, if you can't hear the hissing. Which most can't.

But if you can hear the hissing, it's pretty much a deal breaker. I envy the people with less sensitive ears than me...

They are still good at higher volumes for music or gaming etc....Movies and the like that can have quiet gaps, the hissing gets to me as well. No one I know however who was ever at my place could tell wtf I was talking about. But this is a somewhat common issue with powered monitors.

I own a pair of these and had to run them through an optical adapter to avoid the hissing. Amazing sound. I paid a hella lot more for mine too. Question is do I need 3 more to do 5 and add a sub for that price? :p

Well, shit. Bought a pair of these last week for $109.99 each. Now they're $80 on Ebay and $95 on Amazon.

If one pair of monitor hisses that doesn't mean they all hiss. All it takes is a bit too long shelf life for the capacitors to dry out and you get a nice hissing speaker. Amps do not like being out of use for years.

How would one go about making a 5.0 system out of these? My mobo (signature) has the connections but I think I'd need to run them via optical somehow to avoid hissing. I don't even think a dedicated sub would be needed. These have quite a bit of bass in them as is.

At first I agreed with you when you brought this up in the thread from a year or so ago but... The more research I did, the more I realized I'm not the first one that had this issue. Many people did, and it seemed more to do with ears than it did with the individual speakers... As pointed out in the quote below, emphasis on bold part

For nearfield listening, I couldn't stand the hiss. I could hear the thing from 4 feet. I agree it's common with active monitors, and not all of these JBL's probably hiss the exact same amount. Perhaps there is even a pair with a negligible amount. But I think it's likely that they all do. That's just an active monitor, unless it has a low volume cutoff or something like the Vanatoo T1's.

If it was solved with a connector difference, you're probably talking about buzzing, not hissing. My pair hissed without anything connected, on any socket in the house...

I got rid of the hissing, finally, by simply plugging them in with 3 prong to 2 prong adapters and running a standalone pre-out on top of a USB DAC. (Grace SDAC + Magni 3).

They are very finnicky. One of them got rid of the hissing just by using the pre-out vs. the DAC's pre-outs, but the other one needed the 2 prong adapter. And if you plug them into a dirty output (e.g., your monitor) you will get a bad buzz.

Once you get rid of that hiss (which I agree, drives you crazy) and assuming you have a clean pre-out these are a steal, sound-quality wise.

I've owned these for a few years now.

I paid more than this used, worth every freaking penny.

Have them running through an Audiotrak HD2 DE > Optical > Emotiva XDA-1 DAC

I could hear mine from across the room when just on and nothing playing, with music or something else at volume, I could not tell anything. I ended up shielding the amp inside and wrapping the wires etc etc which reduced it a great deal, but still there, there are a few websites with all sorts of mods to them and some targeted at hissing.

These are awesome for near field. I have then running off a shit stack and they sound great. I'm convinced you'd have to spend a lot more to get better sound.

good price, good speakers.

I have a little 2 channel listening station setup with these.

You must have a very quiet room... it had to get very quiet before I could hear it from that far. I'm envious. I was in a condo at the time.

The hissing volume depends on the input source very much. I have a pair of LSR308s. Even with a decent dac you have to be careful not to leave unused devices connected to it collecting interference. Forget internal sound cards, they collect so much noise from the pc that these speakers would be a nightmare.

I sometimes have to do a power cycle on the left speaker and then most of the hissing goes away.
Normally I can't hear the hissing over my very quiet but not noiseless pc. And I'm sitting about 1m from the speakers. But if I just move my head 20-30cm closer the hissing becomes audible.

I can hear the wall clock ticking in the living room all the way in my bedroom....I had to take it down, could not stand it.

Mine might also have a higher level hiss, never know, like you said, some people might not have any hiss, or very very low and is why not everyone notices. However many people don't know what they are listening for or that higher range in their hearing might be gone. I have listened to LOTS of loud music, how mine isn't gone yet I have no idea.

Anyone have a chance to audition these alongside other powered monitors like the KRK Rokits, Audioengine A5+, etc?

Pretty sure they're a step up from the M-Audio speakers that were popular a while back, but just wondering if they're a clear upgrade from what I already have.

I use mine as my tv front speakers. I just walked to them and checked and they do hiss a bit if I stick my ear next to them and granted that will annoy someone in a very quiet environment and near field. Mine are several years old though. But as I use them the hiss is covered by the aquarium bubbling anyway.

I've had mine for about 2 - 3 years and they've always been in the nearfield. I can only hear the hiss when I put my ear right to the tweeter. I can hear my external hard drives spinning more than the hiss. These are a steal at those eBay prices.
