Hey all,

My up-to-date Windows 10 x64 install won't shutdown properly, or I guess technically it shuts down then turns back on after a few seconds.

have tried the following:

-disabled "wake on lan" and "event timers" in bios
-ran 'power troubleshooter' with no results
-ran sfc /scannow with no results
-disabled 'auto restart after system failure'
-disabled 'fast startup'
-disabled sleep/hibernate
-set power button to 'shutdown'

probably tried a few more things I can't recall off top of my head..

is this just some sort of glitch from the recent windows/intel patches or something..? highly annoying, only way to shut down right now is hold down the power button.. not great.

I assume windows 10,
Tap the window key then type "power options" and click on the result. In the resulting dialog look in the top left pain and click on "Choose what the power buttons do" In the resulting dialog click on "change settings that are currently unavailable" then uncheck "Turn on fast startup (recommended) followed by "save changes" and reboot the system. Problem should be resolved but be prepared to go back and do it again as I have had updates reset it, although it's been awhile maybe M$ is tired of the complaints and fixed that. In any case GL

in case anyone cares, it seems it was because I had "allow computer to turn off this device to save power" disabled in device manager for all my usb devices (rift)...

Then it means that some usb device was active on the background all the time.

yeah, didn't know that would cause a system to restart on it's own.. or I guess not shutdown properly.

only thing is my computer keeps making those "device disconnected" sound effects every now and then.. all I can think of is it's my Rift devices (sensors, headset, controllers) being shut off and windows powering down the usb ports.. annoying.

Could also be an out of date BIOS that is not handling the powerdown sequence correctly, or a driver incompatibility with fast boot.

update: problem came back last night.. maybe windows 10 weekly updates borked some settings.. sigh.. won't get much chance to mess around til the weekend

Easy solution: Get an USB3 hub and unplug it when you don't use it...

are these unticked in device manager

i'll give it a go when I'm home, could it be ANY usb device? I currently have:

-5 port USB hub plugged into USB2 on-board feeding over to couch with:
-usb wireless logitech dongle for keyboard
-usb rf dongle for microsoft mouse
-sometimes have sing-star mics or usb snes controllers plugged in here too
-front-usb header is 360 wireless receiver
-rear-onboard usb with:
-wired gigabyte mouse
-oculus rift headset power
-inatek 4 port usb3 card with:
-2x oculus rift sensors

yes it could be any so make sure they are all turned off. ive had a mouse cause this before, the sensor would "twitch" and cause wake ups.

went through EVERYTHING and made sure 'allow computer to power off...' was checked and then 'allow device to wake computer...' was un-checked.. didn't help :(

At admin command prompt type "powercfg -lastwake"
It might tell what restarted the computer. Lots of other options that might be helpful.

"wake history count = 0"

:(

updated to new AMD drivers as well... maybe it's my inatek usb card for the rift..? I'm using the generic drivers windows installed which I heard is recommended but I could track down official drivers just in case..

time to get down to the basics. remove all unnecessary drives, add in cards and usb devices. if it still happens try another m/kb combo or shutdown and yank them to see if it powers back up.

why do you say that?

Experience. I'd say 80% of the time a system will restart when trying to shut down its bad motherboard. Very rarely it was a power supply or bad card/hdd/cd connected. Either way its not software or drivers. When the operating system send the command to shut down then it's entirely in the motherboards hands until it either shuts down or not. Once it releases the OS and reboots it purely hardware involved.

I'd argue a bad OS :D

probably, don't want to jinx it but the system has been shutting down just fine 4 nights in a row now... maybe updated AMD drivers and windows updates fixed something... hard to trouble shoot unless I get stuck in a shutdown loop, and then at that point I probably just want to go to bed :/ if it happens again though i'll start pulling devices

update: figured it out finally! (I hope)

problem came back saturday night, so after every time it would restart I would disconnect another usb device and try shutting down again until it worked. then confirmed again yesterday when the problem was there by disconnecting the same device.

it's the Rift sensors (which I hadn't used all week), my guess is because the Oculus Tray Tool has the option to disable the USB Selective Suspend it's messing something up - even when I re-enable it after playing. Checked the reddit thread and the developer is working on a new version to better support the newer rift core software so hopefully that fixes it, in the meantime i'll just remember to disconnect the sensors before trying to shut down - or perhaps uninstall the tray tool.
