How does one buy a graphics card?

the answer is risk used market or vigilance at amazon/bestbuy/newegg watch for preorder at or near msrp get your order in and hit buy on that shit before the miners gobble them up... you should all be warned if the crypto market suddenly dies like goldman sachs is crying (they are scared old money will become worthless and they will need to learn the new money)

I paid 470 for my 1070 i could sell it for double that now... I am not selling it...

I'm half tempted to sell my 1080 for a 50% markup and just go buy another one off the shelf at Best Buy. Clearly nobody else is looking there.

My local bestbuys have not yet an nvidia graphics card in stock for months. one or two RX560/550s and thats it. empty shelves. I sold my 8 1080s for $700 each (paid under $500 for each them) and im having sellers remorse. I really thought i could get some 1080ti by now around msrp or vegas. However, i was mistaken and the prices went up even further. Who in the hell is buying vegas for $1299? I keep seeing them go out of stock.

bestbuy briefly had a 56 vega for $799 but thats still to high for me.

I got an email from Nvidia today. Within 2 minutes of receiving the email, I went to the site to buy a 1080ti and they were all gone.

Anyone else have this happen to you?

this happened to me, i saw the email 6 minutes after it arrived and was WAY to late.

You haven't been reading what others are saying here have you?

There is at least one 1080 Ti, a 1080, a pair of 1070s, and a 6GB 1060 Ti available on EVGA right now, if you are willing to also buy a PSU and a Case. For your purchase you will get a small discount, probably $60+. You can use that discount to allow you to more quickly sell the case or PSU if you don't really want them, or you can take your time selling them and keep the discount making your card cheaper, almost MSRP.

Also, as was said earlier, it's a regular occurrence almost daily that EVGA puts up a few cards for sale. They don't last long, but they do show up so set up for it and catch one and either way, it won't cost you more than the rest of the computer combined.

What if you want to buy just a card? Like we used to be able to do. You shouldn't have to get things you don't need just to purchase a video card. I can't see PC gaming going on for too much longer if all of the hardware is going to miners. Mark my words unless something is done. This is the end of PC gaming.

So I take it then that you don't fall in the camp of "I can't build my new PC because I can't find a video card". You are trying to upgrade an existing system then I take it?

Which video cards are you specifically wanting that you are ready to pay current MSRP for right now? (As in immediately, not thinking about it for a few days).
Do you want New only or good condition used?

Let me know and I'll see what links come up on offer that I can send you.

I am HAHA! You get nothing!

Seriously though, be smarter than that, just buy an ounce of gold instead. The world always needs gold. These video cards will be in junk piles years from now.

Thats funny, but i disagree. To me, gold is worthless. A video card gives me tons of entertainment, gold does nothing. Plus id argue an once of bitcoin is worth a lot more then an ounce of gold :) Having mined and sold over 65 bitcoins though, i was not smart enough to "hodl"

I just checked this and the only cards bundled with a case is 1080 SC and a not very compelling price at that. Id probably $599 for that case and card, but im holding out for 1080ti or vegas anyway.

$599 to $650 is the going MSRP these days for new 1080 cards, getting them for $650 is doable if you watch.
$800 and up is the going MSRP for new 1080Ti cards which is kind of similar to launch prices memory increase adjusted, EVGA regularly has the Hybrid 1080Ti come up for around the $840 mark if you watch it.
Vega 56 is a bit harder and Vega 64 is pretty hard to find, probably secondary market for both of those. Get the 1080 / 1080Ti if you want to game, the Vega ones mine some coins better so they fetch a high price.

Gold allows you & others to use those video cards & mine those Bitcoins. No gold. No bitcoins.

I doubt thats the case anymore. I know old computers had tiny traces of gold in the motherboard, but ive never heard of it used in a GPU. Anyrate, gold is still useless to me. Id rather look at a 1080ti then a piece of gold.

Well an ounce of gold will easily get you your 1080Ti card.
Most likely 6 months or a year from now an ounce of gold will still get you the current generation higher end gaming video card.

Like many other things, gold is a store of value and it goes up and down compared to the legal tender currency based on many things, however historically it has a perceived minimum value and usually for the past 5000 years you could trade it for other items. But just like any other commodity, you might buy at $1500 to $2000 and then find 6 months later it is $900 and then 3 months later its $1100 etc.

Gold is everywhere in your a computer still, its in the processor contacts, the RAM contacts & the PCI express contacts for anti oxidization purposes.

I said, I saw a 1080 Ti all alone on EVGAs site the other day and I got an email alert on a 1070 Ti two days ago although I missed that one, and the guys here have successfully bought cards, one just the other day. No, stock is not where we all want it right now. But that doesn't mean you can't get a card at a decent price if you want one.

Of course if you hunt video cards like some people hunt for jobs ...... You may be in for a dry spell

It all comes down to how serious you are about getting one, we've told people where they are showing up. The rest is up to you.

You know, you could register at EVGA and put up notifications on several of the cards you might want and as soon as you get an email, record the date and time, do it for enough time and you'll know what time of day is the special time for cards.

Response for the post above about evga.

Around 5pm eastern standard time ;) I'd hit the forums a tad early there as it's around then lately. Was around 8-9pm prior weeks ago.

Just weekdays though as shipments come in.

This is the main thread you want to watch as he will mention right before listing them what's coming up and list them with a link when there in stock.

https://forums.evga.com/m/tm.aspx?m=2748728&p=208

Next week is said the kingpin will be back in stock.. no water blocks for them though so plan on air cooling only or using a universal water block and of course liquid nitrogen is still an option hehe.

One does not simply buy a graphics card.

FTFY

Well wait a month or two and see if Nvidia drops Ampere.

Would recommend sitting on EVGA site for the initial release.

Best to wait until end of April / early May. No use of buying a EOL graphics card for 700+ dollars unless you really need it.

I just sold my 3 Titan X Maxwell's for $750+ each, 3/4 of their msrp 3 years later... Was going to sit on my old OG titans and wait for Ampere, but honestly, the 1080ti is plenty for me and the games I run right now, even at 7680x1440. And if I want to upgrade to Amepere. I may lose a hundred dollars or so, but that is because I threw a water block on my 1080ti. Not sure why really, they run so cool. But I always watercool and have my loop setup, though I did down myself to a single loop this time. Remnants from the 480 era of massive heat dissipation.

Considering that even with crypto crashing and losing half its value, it is still profitable to mine. I don't see the graphic card market stabilizing in 3 or 4 months, so I expect I can get a ridiculous price for my 1080ti even after Ampere drops.

Weird times we live in. But hey. I just put $2250 into my bank account for 3 year old graphics cards lol.

Jesus aint that the truth! I haven't looked at video cards in a few months cause the 1080 was over $550 and Vega was never in stock so I was waiting for this mining bullshit to calm down prices. Just looked today and the 1070Ti and 1080 are now $900?!?! Vega 64 is $1100 and 56 is $1000?!

This is just unbelievable. If this is the "new normal" for GPU prices then I guess I'll be a PC gamer just as long as my 290x keeps working. When it's no longer able to play games, I guess I'm out.

Only issue with this is that Newegg/etc are selling them already marked up now. I've had my eyes out for a Vega 64 for a while now, and most are running $1200-1300 at Newegg...

LoL, at least you have a 290x. I am gaming on an rx 560 2gb. Honestly, its actually doing decent 1080p gaming as long as you avoid pubg.

edit: just tried pubg on low w/ultra view distance and it seems fine

Pubg has been a long hard road to get optimized.
Glad I don't work in that industry anymore.
Replacing lots 1080tis.. jesus the cost has gone up nearly $700 in 3 weeks!

It's been a heatwave in CA, I've been trying to trade my 1080ti and old Corsair 1200 psu for a sport bike.

I was a Microcenter today to buy a sd card... I walked past the GPU aisle... I should have taken a picture. It looked as barren as grocery stores right before a hurricane. I only saw a handful of cards and they were useless ones (GT 710, etc). I asked the dude working there what kind of open box clearance deals he had stashed away... best he had was a open box GT 1050 2GB (non TI) for $189. 6 months ago I would have said that card was worth around $100 brand new.

Need more performance for video games, so I purchased a 1080p monitor lol
