I am using hiveOS. It was so cool until I added 3 more card to get up to 7gpu. 5 more on the way to make it 12. However OS is not booting due to a driver error or something. What is your favorite OS? I was thinking to install ubuntu on USB3 stick and do this GS manually. What is your thought?

I checked that one out. Only thing I didn't like is no boot from USB stick. But I might five it a go.

I have a desktop gaming PC which is mining when on idle. It has win10. Same cards get 50-150 more hash on hiveos.

Does it have online management, or you need to do something like team viewer or VNC? Also does it show your stats on a web based GUI?

It's managed either via SSH or Teamviewer. Has telegram messaging for reporting as well as a web portal you can log into and view current mining stats. Mining speed, temp, fan %, hashrate.

Also it has an ability to autoswitch coins based off of details from whattomine.com

Oh man. It looks like this is what I am looking for. Let me start messing with this on a spare rig and move everything when figured it out .

HiveOS coming from SimpleMining.

Edited for clarification.

We're you able to run more than 5 GPU? Was there any trick. I get an error " invalid PC room header signature expecting 0xaa55 got 0xffff" and boot hangs there.

Requirements
  • Any Drive (HDD,SSD or Pendrive) that can be erased
  • GPU Radeon AMD R9 200/300 / RX400 / RX500 (Curently Vega doesnt work) or NVIDIA
  • DHCP in your LAN network - System doesn't support WIFI.
  • Don't assign Public IP address or forward ssh ports to rig - or botnets will find you :)

I think their website says no USB stick support. But I will check it out.

I was able to run from more than 5 cpu w/o issue. Make sure you've set PCIe speed to gen 2 and enabled above 4g encoding.

And yes, it runs on a USB. I also highly recommend updating to the latest community release, as it has a ton more stability.

IMO.. I will never use an OS that I do not build from the ground up.

Im a GPU miner ONLY. so I use windows due to the fact that Linux can not get the cards into p1 state (less hash).

Way to much trust everyone has / is putting into other sites / developers when downloading a custom OS. Everyone is into mining to make $$$. IF you think for a second that once sales of XYZ OS goes down they wont backdoor into you.. or that a backdoor of the OS ( for the ones that are free) does not exist your kidding yourself. If you learn how your OS works from the ground you will; IMO; spend Less time NOT mining when something goes wrong for.. you simply understand whats going on and possibly where the issue is versus googleFu / guessing.

Being that I can review the OS config and view all traffic coming out, or going into the machine. I'm good with the level of trust I have to provide. The simplicity, and stability are why i'm using the setup I'm currently using.

thats you and this is [h] (where we generally know MORE than the average users trying to do this). I cant say based off some of the questions posed here on H or other forums that they are as informed as others.

I agree with this completely. Not to mention, if you want to dig into the source, you can pull down all of the scripts from github and review them. Only closed source components on the box (outside of the standard nvidia drivers, etc) are the pre-built miners, like EWBF and Claymore.

Additionally, since I don't trust EWBF or Claymore, I have all of my miners on a segregated network with IPS & NGFW between the rest of my network.

windows 2012r2 for all my gpu builds, ubuntu 17.10 for all my cpu miners. esxi and a combanation of the previus two for odd ball configs.

Just realized it has no Wifi support. If that is the case, it is out of question for me.

Wireless bridging works just fine, and as an alternative HiveOS does support wireless. That said, I would recommend to use a wired connection whenever possible.

I actually use HiveOS and it has wireless support. Unfortunatelly it is not possible this time as I need to run a cable from living room to the garage and no easy way to do it. It could be done, but if wifi works, why bother?

While I can understand that, if there was a security issue with their miners, people would have noted it by now. Claymore is kinda the standard for mining eth and cryptonight for the industry.....

True, but I'd just rather not take my chances. And it wasn't an additional investment for me, as I already had the network hardware.

I've tried a few different options. I'll add another vote for Win 10 Pro x64. It is just works, is easy to do what you need to including remote access, and you don't even have to activate it if you don't have a license.

I despise that os for mining. It rarely "just works" for me and is so much harder to do anything with. 2016 is a better direct alternitive to win 10. and i prefer win 7 and win 2012 r2 over both

AMD August 23 Blockchain driver does not like windows 7 at.all.

then use a older driver. i get the same performance now on a 580 that i got when the 480s came out. and all win 10 drivers should work on 2016 if that company doesnt go out of there way to prevent it.

Older driver is /far/ less efficient. Additionally the newest drivers that have "compute mode" do not have that capability in Windows 7.

Tldr: Windows 10>Windows 7 for AMD rigs.

got any proof for that? my ancient 480's did 30mh/s back last year on 100w if i remember right. i have been messing around with a clients 580's and they are right around 29mh/s on the same power granted that 1mh/s is probrably just luck differance. half my firepros are running on a 2015 driver and the other half are running on the most recent. there is absalutly no diferance in preformance. and you cant generalize "amd rigs" sure 580's may work alright on win 10 since thats the only os really supported. 480s work best on win 2012 r2 and im assuming 580s would too if amd didnt do the bs of only supporting 10. with that said polaris also works great on linux. firepros do not. 290s and 290s work fantastic under the ancient 15.12 driver.

+1 to Joust's comment. Win 10 >>>> Win 7. For AMD at least.

After living with Win 10 for going on 2 years, I can't stand windows 7 anymore. And so many newer things just don't work on 7, including AMD's compute mode. AMD cards get noticeably higher hashrates on Win 10 than they do on 7, 8 or 8.1 and that's even if you use the blockchain drivers.

As far as windows server OS, no - not a good choice for mining. A mining rig, I feel, needs to be disposable. With Windows Server there is far too much setup required. If you have to re-image your drive you'll be down for a while, whereas you can be back up and running with Win 10 inside of an hour. That aside, if I had to pick one it would easily be Server 2016. 2012 R2 has the terrible Win 8.1 interface and the same AMD driver limits.

In fairness, I assumed 580's but did not specify. Can I prove it? Yes. Will I? No. I've done this particular dance enough that I do not feel the need to replicate again. Consider it anecdotal, disregard, or dismiss as you like. However, I will reiterate that my experience has been (with a fair number of cards, RX580's and 570's) far better with Windows 10.

My RX 480s do noticeably better on Windows 10 as well, so it is not just the 500 series. Some people just don't want to admit that win 7 is old and inferior.

i honestly have never seen a noticable hashrate differnace on any cards i have ran 290s were slower on 10 as well as firepros. polaris is the exact same on pretty much all os. and idk about you but i have a master disk preloaded with everything that i just mirror and plug into a problem rig. no setup or monitor required. driver limits are only on the 580s (and idk about vega) most 580's ill just flash to 480s if im running them personally to bypass this.

i have too ran this expirament quite a few time with MANY differnt types of cards (amd sky's, firepros, s' series, nvidia teslas, 290's, 480's, 580's (although i avoid them as they dont work under 2012), and plenty of nvidia cards too) im happy to have a discussion but saying "windows 10 is supirior because i say so" doesnt really help anyone reading this thread looking for a os to run or really anyone here.

I stated what drivers and capabilities are unavailable with Windows 7, which I find to be detrimental.

You're free to disagree, but telling people considering a rig os to not contemplate these very basic differences is foolish.

The only "discussion" I have seen offered from you thus far amounts to "No it's not." With abject dismissal of specific contrary points.

Lets reframe: how about you prove you hash north of 30Mh/s on Windows 7 with an Rx580 or 570 and prove me wrong. Pix or shens.

Anyone who actually used Windows 7 with 5+ card AMD setups remembers the pain of getting stuff to install and then run with any sort of stability.

Folks are certainly entitled to their opinions, but not the reality of things.
