Overclocking a Ryzen 7 1700 on a Asrock x370 Taichi.

I feel I am going to have a steep learning curve to overclock a Ryzen processor. I have not build a AMD system for about 10 years or so. So I’m out of practice with the way AMD does things. I recently bought:

Ryzen 7 1700
X370 Taichi
G.SKILL Flare X Series 16GB (2×8GB) DDR4 3200

Which will be here on Wednesday or so. I would like 4Ghz or close to it with the memory running at 3200. Reason I bought the 1700 is most of the review sites basically say that all the ryzen 7 CPU's are the same with different clock speeds. I don't really know if that is true or not. This will replacing a 4790K, Z97 MB and 16GB of DDR3-2400. Now if there is a performance difference between the 2, I don't really care about that, unless it is like 50%, which it doesn't seem to be at least from the research I have done. I just haven't liked recent Intel business practices and now the security issues that they seem to be having with Meltdown and AMT so I’m voting with my wallet and going to AMD.

Questions:

#1. What settings do I need to change or look at on the Taichi to get to my Goal of 4Ghz at 3200Mhz ram speed?

#2. Will a Phanteks PH-TC14PE cool a Ryzen 7 at 4Ghz?

#3. This is the first time I have bought a Asrock MB. What are the communities view on their MB’s, support, RMA?

#4. What is the likely performance difference between a 4790K and 4Ghz or near that, Ryzen 7 processor?

3. You'll get mixed reviews around here on Asrock. I think they've stepped their quality up over the past few years. I've never had issues with their motherboards through numerous builds. Their support is pretty good.

4. Single threaded, highest OC on both, the 4790K is slightly faster. Multi-threaded the Ryzen destroys the 4790K.

I would suggest going to overclock.net and looking through the X370 Taichi owners overclocking thread. Not that I am unwilling to help because I have a 1700X with this board but, there is just too much to be able to go through it all in this thread.

I have Ryzen 5 1600 with Coolermaster masterliquid 120 lite and i was able to overclock it to 4ghz on asrock x370 killer sli (with max around 75degrees C). I had to set Ram to 2933 because i have g.skill ripjaws 3000 but other than that it is stable. I du have some problems with boot. Like for example There are problems with cold boot.I have to reboot it couple times and then it starts. Difficult to say if those issues will be on Taichi also. Most important is the latest bios.

From what i see Phanteks doesn't suport AM4 by defaul - you have to order AM4 bracket. In term of performance it should be plenty enough.

I called Phantek and if I send them a copy of the invoice of the heatsink and invoice from the motherboard purchase, they will send me the AM4 bracket for Free!!

Thanks for the replies once again.

So Thanks to everyone that replied to this thread.

I finally got the right bracket from Phanteks and I ended up with:

Ryzen 7 1700 at [email protected] volts
Gskill DDR4-3200 at [email protected] volts

System is 100% stable ran Aida64 stress test and it has made it 4 hours so far with, no problems in sight. I am going to let it run all day but it seems good so far. That cooler is keeping it at 77C, but I think it can do better, I used some crap thermal paste that I got from work. Looking at the tube it says 1.93W/mk which seems really bad. Some of the liquid metal ones say 73W/mk so I am thinking with better thermal paste, I can hopefully get 10-15C lower temps. I dont think it will reach any higher speeds but i believe a cooler CPU is just better.

Also, I wanted to add the cold boot issue does exist on the Taichi, but it doesnt really bother me, since I almost never turn my computer off. But it sort of self recovers. It will try to post 4 times, then sets everything in bios to default, but it keeps your settings and it will post and go into the BIOS, you just save and exit and it will POST and load your OS.

so thanks again

Have you upgraded to the 3.30 Bridge bios and then the latest 4.40 bios? You have to do the 3.30 one first, no exceptions.

No, I am still on the 3.20 Bios. Im not really sure if I am going to go to the new BIOS. The 3.20 is rock solid right now and cold boot issue did not appear till I started Overclocking. If I was planning on getting one of the new processors, then I would update the BIOS. Looking at various threads and on the internet, seems that I got lucky to be able to have my RAM past 3200 with no issues and I dont really know what the new BIOS will do that would help me.

The BIOS notes just say support New Processors, I assume that means 1.0.7.2, But what does it bring for me with a Ryzen 7 1700?

if you have the multiplier bug when overclocking, go with either 3.20a bios which can be found here http://www.jzelectronic.de/jz2/index.php (download/bios) or 3.30 bios which seems to be the hidden official version of 3.20a. do not update to 4.40, they're trash for current gen ryzen and only add zen+/raven ridge support but break a bunch of stuff for current gen ryzen.

When I switched to the 4.40 bios, and you do have to install the 3.30 first, my ram will now run at 2933 speeds without issue. (Before that, my GSkill Ripjaws 2800 speed ram would not correctly run at 2933.) I have not tried overclocking yet, but I will let you all know how it goes.

Break a lot of stuff such as? I have a release day 1700X and have experienced no problems at all and only improvements, so far, with the 4.40 bios.

My taichi is doing fine with the 3000 speeds using the 4.40 bios... Had few issues before on previous revs but now all good!
