Intel has announced a new processor today, the Xeon D-2100. The D-2100 is a low power SoC with a range of 4 to 18 cores, integrated PCH, up to 4 10Gb Ethernet ports, and a TDP of 60-110 watts. The new processor features a significant performance increase over the D-1500.

There sure is a lot of "Edge" in this announcement. Seriously, the word "edge" is used 30 times in this announcement, and 40 times in the product brief. Too bad it's a SoC so most of us will never play with one, because this could be the edgiest processor ever.

Industries and customers use the edge differently
The Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor delivers the ultimate performance to support the largest variety of high-demand applications and services, from the data center core to the edge. As the needs of the edge become more complex and varied, some services and applications will require a different balance of performance, power consumption, and size.

vulnerable to spectre and meltdown?

got to watch that fine print

Benchmark results were obtained prior to implementation of recent software patches and firmware updates intended to address exploits referred to as “Spectre” and “Meltdown.”
Implementation of these updates may make these results inapplicable to your device or system.

So what is this "edge computing" thing? The thing about being on the edge is you risk falling off the cliff...is this really the term they want to use?

Edge, edge, edge, edge, edge...

Did they outsource their marketing department to people that are ESL (but barely)?

Just can't keep track of all the server ofder8ngs

Edit- *offerings. My phone clearly doesn't have the compute power to autocorrect

Maybe Intel Marketing is trying to get your excitement level up by employing the marketing version of "edging" that they use in porn.

Uses too much power.
Creates too much heat.
Costs too much money.
I don't see how these are more desirable than a Xeon Silver.

Approved!

I'm not going to edge my bets that this will be cheap. Sorry had to jump on the bandwagon.

you're pretty edgy yourself, rgMeganik

Kind of like the word "today" in [H] reviews.

Hey intel, you "launched" your Atom c3000 CPUs early LAST YEAR. Guess what, Canada can't get a single one of them THIS YEAR!

How about we get supply issues resolved before you roll out new product? When your "old/new" products still haven't even hit the shelves?

I'm like seriously needing c3000 parts for shit I do too, and AMD doesn't have comparable options at this time, ARGH.

Of course it is. It was probably already at the fabs by the time Intel was told about Spectre/Meltdown. I dont expect to see non vulnerable chips anytime this year despite what Intel says. Unless they are claiming shipping with microcode updates already on the processor counts as not vulnerable....

I may buy one. I mean, I've been browsing with Edge for a while now and it seems like this xeon chip may make my edge browser...edgier?

I don't know what I'll do if I change browsers. Hmmm. Will AMD make a Brave chip soon?

Apple might include a courage chip in their next phone...

They mean in the context of edge processing, so doing work that negates the need to come back to base for more complex processing.

It's a big thing in notional IoT or Smart City architectures for example. Real world use for them, Facebook and Goldman Sachs server farms. All the big whitebox shops use a ton, they're perpetually hard to find because of that.

That said I'm a bit dissapointed to be honest. I've been looking forward to these, that power use is crazy though. The 1500's were economical beasts. 60 watts is just meh, I want the 25 watt ones

It being an SoC isn't that big a deal; Ryzen is, after all. This (along with probably being used mostly in servers/embedded solutions) is what will keep most of us from using them: "Socket Type and Size Socket FCBGA 45 mm x 52.5 mm"

Intel (Edge vulnerabilities still) Inside.......Hard pass on any new processors until the new design has fixed the hardware vulnerabilities. Good luck Intel, you handed AMD some markets shares overnight.

They're going for the 'edge of the network', like you clearly want cooler stuff in your datacenter, but maybe something closer to your users and doing some CPU work could work on a Xeon D. I'm not sure how real that market is. From looking at the SuperMicro motherboards, even though this is a 'System On a Chip', it sure has a lot of other components on the board.
