Break & Enter Dropbox for Amazon Key

Last year there was a weakness exposed in the Amazon Key service, that could flood the network with packets so that the camera no longer updated to your viewing device and lulled you into thinking no one was opening your door, when it absolutely was opening. That hack took a bit to pull off so the chances of it being perpetrated by someone other than Amazon, was fairly difficult. However, "MG" is showing off on Twitter, that he has figured out how to leave a "dropbox" on your front porch, wait for Amazon Key to be used, then show back up and enter after Amazon has left. He has not exposed exactly how this is done, but has alerted Amazon and is waiting for a reply. Thanks cagey.

I call this the "Break & Enter dropbox" and it pairs well with my Amazon Key (smartlock & smartcam combo). It's all current software. Amazon downplayed the last attack on this product because it needed an evil delivery driver to execute. This doesn't.

Once again, why does anyone think Amazon Key is a GOOD idea?

I guess people in places where there is a lot of package theft?

I lived in Seattle for a time and it was really frustrating to get packages because they refused to leave them on the porch (which is good, but...) and always just left the "we missed you" note. If you worked full time it was a pain in the ass because you basically had to go to a UPS/Fedex hub facility to get it, which could end up being over in Redmond or something. And if they attempted delivery 3 times before you were able to get it, they would just send it back.

Still, I guess if I lived in a house I would opt to get some sort of larger locking mailbox to receive packages rather than using Amazon Key. If you live in an apartment that doesn't have a main office that they will deliver to, you are SOL. I guess there is Amazon Locker now, but back when I lived there that didn't exist.

Much rather have local hubs/lockers to pick up at. The last thing I need is the total randoms that are getting employed for this and the USPS Sunday delivery getting to scope out my house all the time.

Can always have deliveries held to be picked up, like at the nearest pick up location, etc. For me I just have shit delivered to my office.

Yeah, for whatever reason that was not an option, to have them "hold" it would be at the distribution center that was like 20 miles away. I think sometimes it was in SoDo so not super terrible, but with Seattle traffic...

where I lived in utah, the nearest location was a half-hour drive one way.

You can have your packages delivered at work...or use one of the many lockers around the area. There are other options out there that are INFINITELY better than giving strangers access to your home!

Yeap, like a trusted neighbor or gasp inlaws or other family close by. Put their address on your ship list and have everything go there.

Where you lived in Utah was there an issue with stolen packages?
I didn't, but ups still refused delivery saying it was unsafe. They were inconsistent about it, though. once they left a space heater, but I had to return it because the side was smashed in. In fact, I think that was on the second or third delivery attempt.

And? Have shit delivered to your office then?

For me there are pluses and minuses to that. I work a 1/2 mile away from my parking spot which is on top of a hill (200+ feet above my elevation at work) so if my package is heavy this is not really a good option that is unless I can get a parking spot outside my building in the evening (which is unlikely being that there are only 4). The second issue is being a university all USPS mail gets delivered by the mail room so if someone ships via USPS I may get an additional delay in getting my package and it will be marked as delivered during the delay. If it does not make it to me I am not sure what my recourse would be...

I would just use the lockers...they are all over the seattle area, probably one within a block or two of this guy's home.
