Darkest Dungeon came out today. Really awesome game to finally have on a more portable device.

Well, now I know why I'm drowning in cardboard memes out of the blue. At least they're publishing the patterns so that anyone with a sheet of cardboard can print and cut 'em to spec.

That said, I've got other priorities for building up my Switch library at the moment, namely Super Mario Odyssey and maybe Xenoblade 2 once I get around to finishing 1 and X. Maybe Fast RMX as well since a snowball has a better chance of not melting in hell than Nintendo actually releasing another F-Zero game at this point. (What, you mean Captain Falcon does things other than PAWNCH! people in Smash? Actually, speaking of which, where IS Smash on the Switch? I hope they're making a new one from the ground up and not just porting the fourth one over like with Mario Kart 8 and Pokken.)

This has always bothered me about Nintendo and save data. Sure, protect and encrypt your software, but I should be able to do whatever the hell I want with my save data. Bring it to a friends house, post it online, whatever. An example of where this would have been really handy, is that I lost my flash stick with BotW for the Wii U, and would have loved to have been able to download a save file that was at roughly the same position in the game to continue. It's ok, because I just restarted, and am already past that point after a couple of weekends of play, but I don't see why people shouldn't be able to do that if they feel like it. That's probably my only complaint with Nintendo actually. User data should be handled how the User sees fit.
I think it's pretty dumb as well, since it made separating Nintendo Network IDs between two Wii U consoles (I got a second one much later for myself so I didn't have to hog my little bro's) a complete pain that required a phone call and the total abandonment of one user's save data on one of the consoles. Can't just copy over saves between consoles, or sync them to cloud storage since Nintendo offers no such service.

This wasn't a problem back in the GameCube and Wii days, though Super Smash Bros. Brawl not permitting save copying through the official interface was perhaps a sign of things to come. I think the real reason they're doing it now is to prevent save game exploits of the sort that befell the original Xbox and the Wii alike, even if it makes legitimate uses a complete PITA.

However, it's not just Nintendo that's been doing this ever since consoles started relying more on internal hard drives than memory cards. Microsoft and Sony also have some per-game instances of this, sorta like Brawl on the Wii.

For instance, you can't copy Steel Battalion save data off the Xbox HDD through the official Dashboard, since it could've been seen as a way to cheat the permadeath mechanic (that eject button's there for a reason, USE IT).

LittleBigPlanet 2 is also similarly limited on the PS3, but for a different reason: the save file is actually treated as the game install data that can't be moved off the internal HDD, and thus cannot be backed up on PS+ cloud storage or any external media save for running a full-fledged, FAT32-formatted USB HDD backup. Considering that the PS3 has to basically reformat itself every time you swap HDDs (and on later models with NOR instead of NAND flash for the firmware, also requires the firmware itself to be installed on the HDD through a USB drive), this can prove to be a real PITA if you don't have a suitably huge external HDD to devote to backing up the thing officially. (Oh, and set aside an entire week for it to finish, because it's SLOW.)

I suppose this is another one of those reasons to prefer PC gaming overall; if you know where the saves are stored in the file system, you're free to do whatever you want with them.

I think it's to do with the fact that:

1. There is competitive pokemon, so they want to limit hacked save games as much as possible, though that doesn't explain why it is like that on home consoles.

2. AFAIK, save games have been traditionally a vector of attack in terms of hacking the console.

Of course, they go and completely botch 3DS's hardware, since B9S 3DS CFW is AFAIK completely immune to system updates, but I don't think such a method exist for Wii U.

That's why I hacked my 3DS the moment I got it, I want to be able to backup my save files (which I consider the most valuable as that represents the time I spent playing it). I haven't played any games that require significant time investment either on the Switch for that same reason.

I get that, and it could really come down to the individual game in a perfect world. If the game is competitive/multiplayer, don't allow save transfers. One backup tied to the system maybe, but not transfers. If the game is single-player only and not a leaderboard type, then why not. People should be able to do whatever they want with their save data in that case. I don't often need this ability, but I did recently with Breath of the Wild, as I lost the flash drive that I installed it to. I ended up just starting over, but I think I was probably 30-40% of the way through the game with a lot of grinding as well. I'd have loved to be able to download a similar save (30-40% completion) and be on my merry way. Zelda isn't competitive, so no reason not to allow it really.

I do see how unencrypted save data could be used as an attack or exploit vector though, so there is that. It's probably easier to just disallow it all than to work on a per-case basis.

Still pretty lame though for any legitimate users.

The vector of attack has, to the best of my limited knowledge, nothing to do with encryption.

It has more to do with how the game and system loads that save file, which opens up a vector to launch Homebrew applications. But the vector of attacks can vary.

This whole file saves has been one of my major pet peeves about consoles in general, not just Nintendo, just Nintendo is the worst because they don't have any sort of cloud save storage services, though Switch may be the first console they can actually do that as the saves are tied to the system, not carts as it historically had been.

Hell, I'd even take save cartridges like the Gamecube if it meant I could move them around. :D What's stupid is that I have a 32GB SD card in my Wii-U, and basically the only thing on it are saves that I moved over from the old Wii for things like Skyward Sword. Might as well pull it, put in a small one, and use that elsewhere.

Oh well. It more or less is what it is, and I'll still buy their products. Just something I would love to see if they could implement it safely.

Had my Switch for around a month.... Love a lot of things about it, Price Point, Cartridges, Portability, Joy Cons. Negatives would be the amount of games out now, but Zelda and Mario will keep me busy for a good amount of time. Really love what Nintendo did with this system. Mario looks fantastic on my 60" TV as well.

I had an issue with my Joy Cons and took 7 days, no charge to ship my Switch into to Nintendo and get it back. Had to get a factory refurb but they transferred my data. Works great now.

At this point in owning the switch (which my kids and I absolutely love) I wish Nintendo would work on bringing in some of the first party titles from the Wii u. We never owned that system and it seems like it would be a good move for Nintendo to bring those over which I would think wouldn't be all that difficult (not like creating a new game from scratch) to give us more to play, since many probably never had a wii u like us. I mean it would essentially be printing money using a title that already exists if they brought it over to the switch.

I think they will. I really hope they bring over the remakes like Twilight Princess and Wind Waker too. No reason not to. I have a Wii U and we still use it fairly heavily in my house, but I do plan on grabbing a Switch as well, and it would be nice not to have to bounce back and forth. I'm happy to buy the games a second time for the convenience (since they're ones I will continue to play).

Found a lady selling an hour from me a barely used blue-red switch for $200 bought on Christmas that her grandson apparently didn't like compared to iPad. Makes me so tempted. She's also selling the Mario Odyssey and Rabbids Kingdom battle for $30 each. Guys, convince me if I should take a trip or not, cause the price seemed good to me.

That's essentially $100 off retail for the Switch and half off for the games. Those are two of the best games, so they're a good deal. The Switch isn't exactly rare anymore, so that's a toss-up depending on how "used" it is. Some kids can be pretty rough, so I'd definitely look it over first. If it's in perfect condition (check for screen scratches) - might as well go for it.

She told me it was barely used since Christmas when it was originally bought and sent me some photos. No obvious scratches or damage on it. I was wondering about warranty. Is it like with Apple, that cares only about the S/N and can fix it for you if it's not some obvious accidental damage, no matter who the original buyer is?

Go for it. Nintendo makes solid products so I wouldn't worry to much about the warranty. It is only 1 year anyway but I am sure it is S/N base so it might have 1/2 of it gone anyway if you don't have a receipt.

Diablo 3... looks like it's coming to Switch for real.

If there's a game that would be a perfect fit for the Switch, it'd be something like Diablo.

A PSO game would be another great fit if Sega ever decided to do something with the series outside of Japan.

Hopefully the Switch version of Diablo 3 isn't just a straight up port. I'm getting sick of old games getting ported around endlessly. It isn't just Nintendo, either. That seems par for the course across all platforms right now.

Just bought Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, what a blast! I'm still amazed by the graphics capabilities of the Switch for basically being a tablet, both Mario & Mario Kart (only games I own) look amazing on my 55 inch Samsung.

Looking forward to Diablo 3 on it, haven't played a Diablo game on a console since Diablo 1 for the Playstation.

Crash Bandicoot on Nintendo seems weird....although Nintendo almost partnered with Sony for the Playstation, strange times.

Smash combined with the Solaire Amiibo = me very happy. It'll be interesting to see if this is truly Smash 5 or if it's more akin to Mario Kart 8 deluxe. I'll be fine with either as there's nothing really wrong with Smash 4 beyond a couple super high-level balance tweaks. At least as long as they add all the DLC stuff and some additional goodies.

It's starting to look like it'll be Smash 5. Nintendo said they were done with balance updates for Smash 4. The logo is completely different. Nintendo calls this Super Smash Bros (Working Title) meaning that may or may not be the final title for the game. That is Breath of the Wild Link, Smash 4 used Twilight Princess Link (I believe). Looking at the character silhouettes, they're hard to make out but there is nothing that looks like Pac-Man or Cloud. Bandai Namco was the primary developer for Smash 4 but they're not listed in the copyright section. HAL Lab is listed in the copyright section and they had no real involvement with 4. Sakurai has confirmed his involvement, it seems unlikely that he would be working on port over a new game.

Anyone think we'll get a Call of Duty for Switch? I don't see why we wouldn't at some point. It'd be stupid to not with the huge and growing install-base of the Switch. I mean even the Vita has a Call of Duty game.

Black Ops 4 which supposedly is coming out in October is not coming to Switch. Perhaps during the development cycle, Activision didn't know how successful the Switch would be so they never bothered? Maybe they'll release a Call of Duty for Switch next year?

Who wants to play a serious FPS on switch?

Sales would be very poor.

Serious FPS? COD? HA!

Though, you are probably right about sales. Nintendo's shitty online system alone would kill a lot of sales potential for the game.

Well, i succumbed and pulled the plug when new swicth consoles were selling for $225-240 from a few sellers (newegg, manhattanproducts something) and got myself one for $240 after tax. Now waiting for it to be delivered will be on a hunt for low-priced skyrim with zelda and hope to see CFW with hombrews later this year.

Man I have been caught up in my PS4 Pro lately...I still need to go back and play more of Mario Odyssey.

Same. My Switch probably only has 20 hours on it, and I'm a pretty big Nintendo fanboy. My PS4 Pro, that's another story. I'm playing through the Nathan Drake Collection again right now, and will follow it up with Uncharted 4 and the Lost Legacy (haven't played, yet). Then, there's about 5 more PS4 games I'm going to attack. Nothing on the horizon, though, for my Switch. *sigh*

I've been thinking about replaying the Uncharted games as well. Haven't played though them since 4 came out.

For me, replaying the Uncharted games shows how surprisingly good #1 is (it still has the best shootouts, in spite of the so-so AI) and how weird #3 is. The fact that collection bumps them all to 1080p/60 doesn't hurt, too. I still wish they included the Vita game for shits and gigs. It honestly isn't that bad. It's no worse than the one with Chloe and Nadine in terms of length.

We're getting Smash this year? That does it, Nintendo just won 2018!

Meanwhile, I put a deposit down on Octopath Traveler since it really does feel like Square's finally got their SNES/PS1-era golden age vibe back. It's also not the sort of game I'd expect to see on PC by a long shot, though Square Enix has been surprising me as of late in that respect - just check their recent Steam releases.

OVERKILL clearly didn't get the hint when they ported PAYDAY 2 of all things to the Switch. Neither did id Software when DOOM 4 came over.

That said, the PC will forever be my go-to FPS platform; even the gyro aiming on Wii U and Switch can be a bit wonky, sort of like running off your mousepad and being unable to physically recenter your mouse without throwing your aim off again.

FPS been typically sale flops for Nintendo system. #rd party titles in general. Very few people own just a switch and those that do are for Nintendo games generally. Why pay $60 for a inferior port of something if you have PS4/Xbox/PC? I would actually like to know how many copies of Doom and Payday actually sold on the switch.

Doom sold well enough that Bethesda is still going forward with the port of Wolfenstien, but it never really made a huge impact on sales charts. PayDay 2 probably won't either, especially as it is apparently pretty far behind other platforms in terms of features and stuff.

Is there anything coming out for this in 2018, i've heard nothing? Considering selling.

Same problem as wii-u, nothing to play on it. Zelda, Mario... 80 ports from other consoles i've already played :(

Smash Bros.
Okami HD
Dark Souls Remaster
Undertale
South Park: Fractured But Whole
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Ed.
Octopath Traveller
Mario Tennis

Some ports for sure but also some good-looking first-party titles it seems.

It's a standard Nintendo system, although at least the 3rd party games are a little better this time around. I bought the Switch knowing full well that it's basically only for 7-8 first party games and the rare lucky port.
In this instance, that port is Dark Souls.

Those are all ports no?

I guess Mario tennis is new.

That information isn’t known for smash.

The sites I read are leaning toward wii-u port.

Octopath isn’t really a big title though is it? Looks like a retro indie game square bought.

2018 is shaping up to be pretty disappointing
